I dunno... is this something implemented already or is this what they are actively creating/designing now?
I think it's in the early design phase.
That was my fear but I didn't want to just assume the worst.
I am sorry but I know they spent all these years making the engine... however all these things should have already been designed. When I see Excel spreadsheets after 8 years it just makes me get sad.

If we consider that there are still 3 phases of development remaining (Beta 2, Beta 3 and Open Beta), then I guess that they still have time to design and implement new systems like Alchemy. Maybe they would need additional designer(s) to work on crafting, races/classes, etc. On their website it says there's only one (plus Mark). But I understand your concerns.
If he wanted to see a very robust crafting system he could simply look at FFXI but most people forget that game even exists. There is only one mistake here and that is if he goes all into pots,Alchemy doesn't need to be about consumables. Alchemy is the ancient version of Chemistry, periodic element table.Medicine, pills is a form of Alchemy.Sure most everything comes in a container, package but it doesn't have to be something you drink out of a potion bottle.
He talked about RARES/rarity but this can be a bad idea if done like the EQ series.I much rather prefer that you MAKE your own rares rather than find them. The simple reason is that nobody will want normal mats eever, they will only want to collect rares and toss evrything else or commons will have no value at all. However if you have to make your rares then ALL of the mats are needed and worthwhile carrying, attaining.
The trick to crafting is making it engaging and having some form of player effort to attain the rare results. If he just uses a "spreadsheet" as he talks about, then that is likely a lazy design.Example EQ2 had a mildly decent design where you had to engage by making key presses but it wasn't difficult at all and still became boring.
IMO FFXI got it right, they made it so ALL levels of crafting were valuable, mats were hard to come by meaning it took effort to actually craft something.Sure eventually the AH is full of items being sold but so what, imo that is a good thing.

I'll need a few more pictures before I even consider paying for this pre-alpha.
I must admit it does look attractive. I always get taken in like a gullible kid with pictures and pretty potion bottles. One of the reasons I love games with potions is that I love how those bottles look.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes to implement this.
18 more months..
Oops, wrong game, nm.
I would be happy if it took (only) 18 months from now to get CU released. It would surprise me but anything can happen.
I was talking about how long it would take to get the just the alchemy system implemented, 18 months sounds ambitious but Kyleran is always the optimist.
