Last week, Jonathan talked about being burnt out in EverQuest II in his latest Norrathian Stride column. It got Bradford thinking: when he gets burnt out on the genre or a game in general, he has a go-to that is always installed. Do you have a go-to game or genre when you feel burnt out on an MMO?

Me. Bradford is talking about me
No, I finish one, move to the next, same with games.

Same here and I know Kyleran likes to finish solo games to death too. MMORPG's are trickier as long term some staleness will set in when playing for a couple for years. I take a break, two to 6 months depending on how long I have been in the same MMO.
Heck, I've done Baldur's gate and Neverwinter Nights for years as well.
Every game has it's own life. Shooters might not be as long for me and puzzle games have a sort of built in lifespan as once you solve it you solve it.

I would put the Mass Effect games in that category too since I go back and replay them every couple of years.

Last few years i returned to my roots, two mmorpg's and that's it. The reason was once to have something to do when a server was down.
Now, it's also there to help prevent burnout.
However since late BFA wow has been keeping me busy af and haven't much time to play SWG:L much, but as time goes by that only makes my craving to play the absolute f'ing shit outta SWG even stronger.
There is just way too much to do in wow, its gotta grand master hold on me, walking away from an mmorpg for well over a decade can pay off, plus meeting the right peeps is huge.
Just play on a private server.
I thought Vanilla Classic was going to be the best place to play Vanilla, I subscribed for a couple of months, played probably one month and then closed my Blizzard account, it just isn't worth it. Private servers offer literally the same experience, but at least you don't waste good money on it.
If you want to play WoW so bad, find a good private server and play there, no sweat off your back. Forget Activision B, they are no longer Blizzard who made great games and cared to make their player base happy, they are just after the quickest, easiest money and all their developers that possess some signs of competence and talent are leaving them one by one, Activision B are left with clueless and incompetent interns and most of their gaming development is outsourced to games in Southeast Asia. Warcraft 3 Reforget was made by a Lemon Sky Studios, who are based in Malaysia.
My man and I downloaded lotro last night and playing that. Loved all the movies! I actually find the graphics pleasing to look at. My man and I are pretty excited to play. Plan is to explore, follow the lore, and chill.
2. Endless Space 2
3. Any number of isometric fantasy RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Pathfinder, Pillars of Eternity (1&2).
(My son speaking to his Japanese Grandmother) " Sorry Obaba, I don't speak Japanese, I only speak human."
Definitely SWTOR for me, too. I can always go back and it feels familiar because, well, it's Star Wars. And there was a time when tab-targeting felt old and clunky, but as the years have gone by it is now nostalgic, familiar and even fun and challenging.
I have a GBA SP somewhere in a closet and I take it out from time to time when this happens. I pop in a game I know by heart (The Hobbit, Pokémon FireRed, Shrek Swamp Cart Racing) or just Tetris, because it relaxes me so much.
If I really get burned out on gaming in general (usually when I play more than 4-5 hours on a day), I'll get back to reading, which I also do a lot, or watch a film or series.
EDIT: I think the change of screen also has something to do with it, maybe?
what? people still play wow on private servers because of money? lol. private servers are not stable and you never know if they get closed or not or viped. I though people played wow on private servers because there was not classic on retail. I think blizzard themself don't know that private servers still exist. I will try to find the popular ones and report them and send it to blizzard to close them
SW:G-EMU .... The only way I can play my BE ... I love making pets
You were wrong, people don't play only because a certain version of an MMO is present, some just don't wish to pay at all. When Vanilla Classic launched in 2019, one Vanilla server outright shut down so it doesn't interfere with Classic, but the rest of the servers retained 80% of their populations. As Vanilla Classic became stale, these private servers got a boost of players.
What's more is that private servers in some cases have nicer and less toxic communities than official servers. It's true that they can get shut down at any time and sometimes the admins run gold selling scams and whatnot, but that's not why people play or avoid playing it, since they are private and can shut down at any point, people aren't that attached to their characters and are OK with starting over as many times as needed. There will never be one private server to end all private servers.
Another reason to want to play Vanilla private servers over Activision B. servers is because all the bots are on the official servers and you're more likely to have a better experience on the private server. What you're saying about private servers not being stable is a myth. 99% of WoW private servers running Vanilla, TBC and WoTLK are absolutely stable and all content works just fine on them as there are more than 10 years of work done on those cores. Vanilla and WoTLK are the most stable and working private servers you can find.
I'm not here to advertise private servers and try and sway people to play on private servers than the real thing, just clearing some myths and misconceptions that private servers are somehow inferior. In some cases they are superior to the real ones. In case of F2P Asian MMOs, like Aura Kingdom, Eden Eternal, Forsaken World, Perfect World, Lineage 2 and others, the private servers are better, because the P2W has been removed from the game. One private server for Riders of Icarus is actually better than the official one, because it has zero P2W and is a few patches/expansions ahead of the official server making the official one look like a joke.
In short some people play private servers, because they can't afford to pay for the real deal or refuse to do so knowing there are free alternatives, others prefer private servers, because they are just better than the official one. For example there is one Vanilla WoW PvE private server, which adds custom content on top of the base game - new races, professions, quests, etc. and it's actually what Vanilla+ would have been, it's one of the reasons for people to prefer a private server over the live one as it offer more and unique content, in case you're bored with the default one.
yeah I'm not going to read all that. private servers are illegal and that's that. no need any paragraphs. I'll spam reports on those servers with my guild. as much as possible. just because. if you don't want retail you don't need wow at all. bottom line.
I imagine there's a few causes more worthy of people's efforts than Blizzard's bottom line.
