Amazon Cancels Lord of the Rings MMO

KumaponKumapon Member EpicPosts: 1,605
Looks like Amazon is at it again. This time another cancellation. According to the article it was a dispute between Amazon and Tencent. To bad I was looking forward to the game.

Odd though it may seem it was Leyou who worked out the deal with Middle Earth Enterprises and Amazon joined in to co-develop and publish a year after that.

So technically I guess they can't do it without Leyou.

Eh not surprised, when I heard Tencent bought Leyou I was like eh damn.....

.....everything was fine until Tencent bought Leyou and remember Tencent is largely beholden to the CCP.

The worse news overall for the lotr fans that wanted a new mmo like me is that it seems Leyou seems to hold the rights to this game IP which means Tencent does now.........

Wonder if Tencent 93% 100% stake on Riot (which is developing their MMO based on League of Legends universe) has something to do with this...

All that money and resources and they keep coming up with stillborn games.  That's why you can't buy into it when people say games like Star Citizen have too much money to fail.

Another one bites the dust. The old game is there so we can still play LotRO.

The games division is cheap change for a 1.7$ trillion dollar company like Amazon. I don't think money is the issue here. Most likely disagreements with the higher ups.

This wasn't a original product of Amazon Games division though, it was done by Athlon games which belonged to a Chinese subsidiary which was bought by Tencent. They had agreed a partnership with Amazon Games that, by the looks of it felt apart.

Games get cancelled all the time and partnerships break too, the only odd thing is the public getting to know about it.

"Tencent is largely beholden to the CCP." For what? What do you mean by this?

I want more The Lord of the Rings games. Believe you me. I absolutely love Tolkien. My first books that just amazed me and thrilled me were by him.

Tecent has a lot of "power" over many companies:

Being Chinese it's said to be heavily influenced by Chinese laws that bring censoring issues that can modify/hinder a game's design/story.

Perhaps you should have a closer look at the shady side of the finance world?

Realize Tencent is primarily owned by a South African firm called Naspers, 31% by latest reports.

How do you screw up Lord of the Rings?

Simple, allow the rumor that Smedley is leading the effort.  True or False, that alone will doom any project.

He wasn't though. This was AGS Seattle and Smeagol is the head of AGS San Diego.

I actually have no clue WTF his studio is working on, if anything.

I'm not really a fan of traditional MMOs anymore, but was kinda curious about what this game would have been like.

Well that depends on who got the license in the first place.  My guess is Amazon has the license and just wanted to subcontract Leyou.
