This is a PvP game, if it was a PvE game the fact that you can buy ammo or potions won't matter but when you're fighting other players and they have an advantage over you it counts as a bad thing. This should not even be a question clearly they should never introduce this in a PvP game. Any form of advantage even if it is only to save time has no bearing when you're fighting NPCs but has a huge significance in PvP game.
I am not sure how this is any more of a pvp game than a pve server on WoW is.

As there is no universally agreed upon definition of what is P2W they aren't lying, no matter what they eventually decide to sell in the store.
The universally agreed definition of P2W is some item that confers more power to the player than any other of the same type, and it is only available for purchase and cannot be gotten by just playing the game.
Almost no game has that, but if they make the chances of getting that item 0.0000001% after 10 years of play, it is effectively P2W.
That's why I use the term "pay to not play", where you can get the items by playing, and other people can pay to not have to play to get the item.
Except your definition is not universally agreed upon. For example.
"Pay-to-Win Isn't All or Nothing
You can probably gather that pay-to-win isn't one static description. People's interpretations of the term vary, and even its implementation isn't always the same.
Some argue that being able to spend money in any way that affects gameplay, like the shortcut kits in Battlefield, is pay-to-win. Others say that pay-to-win only applies if you're directly boosting yourself above other players. And games might have a minor pay-to-win element, but not be completely tainted by it.
The definition we've outlined here is pretty clear, but it's open to interpretation and can appear to various extents. If you can spend to give yourself advantages, or have to pay to skip tedious grinds—especially if those payments have no limit—then a game is probably pay-to-win."

"talking about future plans to potentially add items that "influence mechanics" citing rested XP which would be earned through gameplay and bought in the store."
"Lane mentions that when these would be introduced into the game store would be a combination of factors, from what players are feeling, feed back as well as data they monitor"
So once the fuss dies down they will go P2W, got it.
People are pretty confident the game is going to fully launch in August.....how many times has this game been delayed again? With the one last year getting pushed back an entire yeah when it was supposed to have a beta or some crap the following month. And I still want to know what they've officially said about their post launch content plans, but no one has linked anything......I think more people should be concerned about that than the damn cash shop. Cash shops are only a problem if there are people around to pay and play.
If their cash shop ends being something similar to ESO, then I really don't mind.
I hope not, been playing ESO past few months and I'm still pretty whiff about the whole loot box / crown gems mechanic where all the "best" looking cosmetics reside.

Obviously, they will introduce "pay to not play" in the cash shop. Is it p2w if you can get the item by playing, and somebody else can just buy it?
I know nothing about the game, but lets take ammunition. Let's say you have to harvest items and then craft ammo, which takes play time. Somebody else can just "pay to not play" and buy ammo from the cash shop. Is that p2w?
If they sell health potions in the shop, is that p2w?
Yup that's the very definition of p2w. You're just so used to it that you think it's normal. ANY item that interferes with your progression whatsoever is p2w.
If their cash shop ends being something similar to ESO, then I really don't mind.

I'm paying a sub, so I don't have any problems.
I pay a sub as well, how does that mitigate the fact in order to get crown gems one has to either (illegally?) trade in game gold for them with other players or buy enough loot boxes to raise 600, 1200 or more crown gems to pay for the cool new sparkle pony.
I saw one guesstimate on reddit saying one would likely spend around $180 on loot boxes and need a bit of luck to raise 600 crown gems, back when that was the top end for mounts. These days the latest mounts are going for 1200 or more.
I've actually got 12K crowns (paid $80 to buy a slug of them on sale) which are largely useless as there's nothing I've found worth buying outside of the two bank/merchant assistants.
I did buy a new equine recently just because but the mounts I really want are solidly behind the crown gems paywall.

Yeah, I only just realized this recently (I only really buy poison from the shop), it's totally bonkers imo. I totally hate and despise these types of loot box systems. I just want to earn money and then spend it on what I want, not fuck around with these in game casinos. They have a similar system set up for getting gear from pvp vendors, which I also think is BS, but at least that is not real money and might be able to be justified as a sink for in game currency.
I love the game, but the predatory monetization system is really offputting.
Another PvP griefer game. Haven't we learned anything yet in the past 20 years? Sure I get it, that some people like that sort of thing. Hiding at a load point and jumping the noob that comes through. Victimizing others is the style of entertainment of this genre. I prefer PvE and PvP as choice.
It is NOT a PvP game unless you think modern WOW is one.
In WOW they got rid of PvP servers and in every server you have the option to flag for PvP and you get an XP boost for doing so.
It's exactly the same for New World.
You're about 3 years behind. It once was going to be an OWPvP game but they changed that.

PvP is optional. I guess you didn't check this before you posted your complaints.
As much as I hate to say it and as much as people here may find it hard to believe, because it is Amazon it will likely do better than any of the other upcoming MMOs and probably become a new mainstay. It's not a bad thing, it may bring popularity back to the genera; but yeah it's probably not going to fail as some might think.
The same could have been said for their last two games?
Do tell which of their previous Games were "MMOS"?
I do expect Cricket Sounds.
And reading more of the responses above all I see is Anti-Amazon.
I HAVE played in the New World past Alphas and with their revamps I am excited to see where the game is going.
I have seen not one hint at P2W elements so people need to stop ASSuming until proven otherwise.
If you don't like what you see, move on to something else.
I think NW is going to be a success IMO. I really enjoyed it once they removed the forced PvP aspect. 20 July needs to get here faster.
So far I've seen the following hints of pay to win coming...
--Crafting--
1. special charms can be sold on the cash shop to increase power of crafted items
2. Azoth can be sold on the cash shop to increase power of crafted items.
3. special house trophies can be sold in the cash shop to increase power of crafted items.
4. gathering luck food.
5. cash shop exclusive high grade crafting materials.
--Housing--
1. Rent can be paid in the cash shop for real money.
2. large houses can be purchased in the cash shop.
3. Trophies that provide stat boosts can be purchased in the cash shop.
--Combat--
1. exclusive health / mana potions.
2. exclusive weapons
3. exclusive armor
4. exclusive buff food
--World--
1. azoth sold in the cash shop provides better world mobility.
2. run speed boost
3. mounts. mounts. mounts.
--World PvP--
1. influence boosts
While none of these things currently exist in the game, all the coding / ui work to implement them has been done. The mechanics to make it all happen are in, and some of the game balance already points to artificial demand generation.

"selling anything other than cosmetic items until 2022 at the earliest"
ofc they will add p2w. or they would have said "never". amazon is amazon.
