I probably should try it again at some point, but like several others here I didn't last very long last time. It just felt... Dated.
Actually, just for me, I like the cartoonish/claymation style graphics. In a sense of irony they age better than making efforts for cutting edge hyper-realism.
But to each their own on that one.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I feel art style has everything to do with intricacy or beauty. It can't exist apart from that however it does not need both. Two games I can compare that are from exactly the same time is WoW and Everquest 2. I love the art in both games for different reasons.
WoW has a wonderful sense of colour and the art style complements it with the bizarre palette. Their character images and buildings and towns all reflect this general style that is ageless. They make a world that is very unique and completely recognizable in one glance. The beauty in it is the lore and details in dialogues that completely fit the art. Whoever designed it really did a fantastic job bringing the game to life.
Everquest 2 on the other hand has beautiful designs that are so detailed it is really a study on how to to draw attention to the small things. I have looked at a vase in the game and marveled at the design and detail that went into making that one piece of item for a house. The etched leather on my chest piece or even the general appearances of cloaks in the game is revealing a sense of devotion to intricate patterns. The houses in Neriak for instance are so lovely and the beauty is in the small details.
Art style is personal. I cannot say Crowfall art has succeeded since I have only seen videos and the experience is very different when you can take your time to study something. When you're in the game and part of it and looking around it is a very different experience from watching a video of the game.
However all this is intensely woven into performance because no amount of beauty in Everquest 2 could erase its abysmal performance on most computers. In the end the fact that Crowfall is a PvP game is the most important consideration as far as lag and other performance issues go. Even if the art style succeeds it must never hamper the game's performance as that is cardinal rule to observe.
The next question would be, of those 388K free keys given out, how many of them might turn into actual paid accounts. If even only 2% of them turned up to play at launch, that would be over 7 Thousand additional players into the game, and putting their income numbers somewhere around $450K a month, or put another way, near to 5.4 Million a year.
Let's not even argue that. Lets (again) use your numbers. 5.4 million a year. Lets assume they have a world class 50% margin rate. So the investors get a share of 2.7M. Well the investors put in 27Mil. That's a 10 year ROI to break even (without the founders taking any cash, just pure distribution to the investors). And that's 10 years from launch not 10 years from when they gave the cash.
And let's just get facts straight. The ONLY reason we are having this discussion is because you mistakenly claimed they had 480,000 PAID accounts. I'm not shouting doom and gloom. I am correcting your factual error, to which by the way you have never supplied your source. I just plugged the real numbers into the math YOU showed.
I'm going to be in there on July 6th. So far we are up to 4 in my crew (of 9) that will give it another look. The game will have 2 weeks to hook us before they join me in the New World Beta.
The absolute BEST thing would be for this game to take off. I could sell off some of the Kickstarter Perks for hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Lets hope you are right and there are a few hundred thousand new people coming into the game and like it enough to buy up
You guys never take the governments share into account.

True... I was going for a crazy best case scenario.
On the plus side, here is a great video that shows how to build some of the best classes in the current build.

True... I was going for a crazy best case scenario.
On the plus side, here is a great video that shows how to build some of the best classes in the current build.
The government is my silent partner. When you add up all the different branches, they end up taking pretty much the same as you, sometimes more. Unless you reinvest it.
So, I finally finished the "tutorial" and hit level 30. Probably only put in 6 hours so far so not much, but I've gotten a reasonable first impression. I have only done PvE so far, when I hit level 30 I did then head to the PvP zone but there was noone there.
The UI I've already talked about in another thread, but it's defintiely my biggest complaint. It's just real bad.
Combat isn't as bad as I expected. It is action combat, but barely. I have to aim, but that is as far as the action goes. The rest is more like traditional skill usage from tab-target games: I have a rotation, I have my situational skills and there are some fun little combos to throw in now and again. It's still pretty shallow in comparison to something like early LotRO, but better than what I expected. I need to get stuck in to the PvP to properly evaluate the combat mechanics, given that the game was designed for PvP.
Crafting has been a welcome surprise, in some ways anyway. I've gone miner / armoursmith. Gathering is boring as shit: there are barely any nodes to mine, it takes forever to mine them, you get bugger all resources and your mining pick breaks quickly. But the crafting! Much more involved, and seems to involve a lot of experimentation. I think this is where Raph Koster's influence comes in, as it seems vaguely similar to SWGs crafting.
The meta game seems to have some decent depth. There are classes. You seem to get about 15 talent points to spend on your class, giving you many ways to build that class up, including promotions to specialist classes. I went Knight, then specialised into Sentinel (tank). Not a huge amount of choice available admittedly, but still better than a lot of MMORPGs.
But, you can then equip disciplines. 2 are exploration disciplines - these are your crafting choices. But there are also 2 major and 3 minor discliplines with a ton of choice of what to put in. For example, as a major discipline, I chose "shieldmaster" which gave me a new skill plus some defensive stuff plus a buff to shield damage. I only have one minor discipline (burning hatred?) which causes enemies to drop "wisps" randomly, and picking up a wisp will give me a short buff. It feels like this system will really open up a lot of different builds and ways to play the same class.
The graphics are damn near perfect in my opinion. The game isn't particularly detailed, but what they have built just works. Its like they've looked at everything and gone "what is the core element of this object?" and then done that perfectly whilst ditching the irrelevant stuff. It gives the whole game a very clean look - nothing gets lost in the background, nothing looks messy. It's bright and colourful.
All that said, I've been playing solo in the tutorial world, so I can run it all on high graphics. When I finally enter PvP and have to turn down my settings, things may look worse.
The maps are shit. They look cool, it's an interesting way to draw them. But functionally they're pretty useless.
I don't really understand the world design. When I finished the tutorial and entered the PvP area, some NPC told me that to get to the next world I just had to head east and enter another portal. Couldn't find it for the life of me! A lot of NPCs also kept saying "if you get bored, you can always head to the dregs", but not once did anyone tell me where the dregs were or what they were. I expect there is something pretty easy that I'm missing, something to do with how you switch to your eternal kingdom, or change / enter campaigns, but it hasn't been explained anywhere and I can't seem to find a menu for it.
There are timers on PvP objectives. This seems real bad. By this, I mean that objectives can only be attacked and captured at specific times of the day, with long timers inbetween (longest I saw was ~14 hours before a keep could be attacked again). I can understand the desire, as this essentially channels all PvPers to the same place in order to have a good fight. But it restricts freedom and tactics. I am assuming this sort of mechanic is the sort of thing the devs will change from campaign to campaign, but as a first impression of the PvP structure, it wasn't good.
I'm gonna keep playing this week to see if I can experience the PvP, plus I haven't tried out the eternal kingdom yet.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr7X Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr4X Shaman
Yeah I decided to level a bit. Got tired of waiting for my buddies. Level 20 after a couple of hours. The tutorial is better, but still pretty poor. Then again once you run it you probably never will see it again.
Im up to the Moon world. Once I level this guy I will try a dedicated crafter. I kept all my sacrifice items so it should go quick.

The price drop is not a red flag, but rational : the competition for PvP games now is much steeper then it was in 2015. For example, I am interesting with New World and Ashes of Creation, which also have guild versus guild and PvP, but with better visuals and immersion than Crowfall.
At 40 USD, it is still a steep price for a niche genre, a game that still needs work and limits features due to a VIP subscription.
That said, I do not like the business model (a monthly subscription only would be better), but there are much worse. I dream of a game using the pay-what-you-want per month, but none have done it yet.
GENRE : guild versus guild conquest, in a high fantasy setting. It is not your usual MMORPG and had little content (no story quests).
I backed the game in 2015 for about 35 USD, because my first MMO was Shadowbane, which I enjoyed.
It's amazing how many freshly made accounts have been made just to trash this game.
This seems like wishful thinking to me. Do you have a bunch of specific examples? I looked through this entire thread and not one post(er) fits what you just claimed.
You always get some people that just pop into any PvP game and complain that it has PvP, and no game is going to be right for everyone, but I have seen no evidence that there is some mass amount of "freshly made accounts" that were "made just to trash this game". As I said, we have 5 pages on this thread and nobody fits that description.

NGL, but New World looks more and more like a Train Wreck Unfolding as I watch it. Unlike other games, where it was an issues of just getting things sorted and done, New World, is like watching an MMO with a Drunk Capitan at the wheel, as the crew franticly tries to prevent the ship from sinking.
When New World launches, I might check it out, just to see what cluster bomb of a MMO it has become. I stand to be impressed, but in the end of the day, I don't think it will ever be worth what they spent to make it.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
I feel sorry for these players because their game will never be AAA but more importantly the players will be approached by new monetization methods as this business struggles to operate.
I coined the phrase" you couldn't pay me to play this game" lol.Well maybe that was Reynad...small joke if you know who Reynad is.
Know what else all these rewlly bad low budget games are doing? They are making the bad high budget games look better than they really are.Like you go from playing Crowfall to Cyberpunk and your all blown away WOW this looks amazing.IN otherwords stick enough dumpster games beside middle income families and the middle income look like Bill Gated neighborhood.

I know. I just hate when people say things easily proven wrong.
As for the game. It’s better than it was when I last tried it but still has some very serious issues.
One example... they announced a max zone population cap of 200. Ok. Not ideal but it’s Unity so it is what it is. The real problem is that they have a 500 player guild cap. Those two just don’t work together. You have to design a game around the technical restraints. Thus is just going to result in all kinds of hurt. Big guilds will just plop into zones during siege times and lock others out. Then people in those same guilds will complain because they can’t join their guildies. Just an example but it’s a fundamental disconnect...
Another one that I can’t believe is still in game. Your Eternal Kingdom is where you can build your houses, forts, keeps, castles... The stuff looks good. The problem is that once you drop a structure, whenever you cursor over it the whole structure gets highlighted and buttons pop up to move or drop it. It looks horrible. It’s been asked about on the forums but no response that I saw.
Anyhow...
We got most of the gang to try it again. Not sure how long but we will be there at launch.

Couple questions: Have they fixed the lag on the map? (it used to take a split second between when u pressed the button and when the map actually opened)
Do they have in game guild functionality now? For example can you join a guild in game? When I played you had to join a guild by applying through the crowfall website and there were no social functions in game.
How about other social/group functions? Its been a while now, but I seem to remember that it was hard to actually group/ungroup before, for example.
Is the dysnc fixed? When I played last year the mob skills had a significant dysnc/lag.

Added numbers.
1. The map opens for me immediately but it takes a second or two to populate with the terrain etc...
2. I believe you still have to use the website but they were working on the guild functionality. As of last time I played there was a Guild tab on the social panel that would show 0/0 players. Hopefully it gets included for launch.
3. Target player, hit F and then 3 to invite. or type /invite name. There is a Friends list that is supposed to give you more functionality but none of my friends are online so I cannot test it now.
4. I had zero desynch these past 2 weeks. But pop was low, maybe 150 on the server.

It's amazing how many freshly made accounts have been made just to trash this game.
At this rate it seems like people on this site have more fun trashing games, than they do actually playing them.
Must be an extremely boring lifestyle.
Where? I just went back and checked, 3 posters with less than 25 posts, all of them ranging from 2020 back to 2012.
Not one new account in this thread at least, any thrashing of the game is being done by the usual cast of characters.

To answer your questions about social.
The Guild Application process is done through the website because when you a join a guild, you will be moved to that guilds "Team" or server, and will not have the option to move to other servers. So this is handled outside the game.
Grouping has been a thing for a while now, several months at least, with the last time I played.

Are you sure about that? Cannot test currently but it seems unlikely that 500 person guilds would even fit on one server and it was always the stated intention to be able to join multiple campaigns (with different characters). It’s true that your faction is set by the Guild though. So if your guild is “Sun” all members are automatically “Sun”. On all servers. Well technically your guild leader chooses a deity. And server rules assign those deities to teams. Could be “Sun” in a 3 faction server and Gaia in a 12 faction one. I fooled around with it a bit last week and you can change guild deities once a day.

When I joined my guild, it told me on the start up screen that it was aligning me to my guilds chosen server.. so.. I'm somewhat sure about this. Oh good.. I shall enjoy this then.
After all, you have already made it clear your only reason to care about this game is to sell off your KS pledge rewards, so no sure why you would care about the actual features, since you have no urge to actually play the game.
But, Yah, that is what it said.. too bad you can't test it.. how about you try quitting your guild and joining a different one, and see what happens.

I did? I do not believe I did that at all. One can be realistic AND still care about the actual features of the game. So just to be clear, I'd like nothing more than for the game to have a fun and successful launch. Lots of signs pointing to a fizzle, but we shall see

Yah. I'm Pretty sure about that.
This is going to be fun..

But to each their own on that one.

When New World launches, I might check it out, just to see what cluster bomb of a MMO it has become. I stand to be impressed, but in the end of the day, I don't think it will ever be worth what they spent to make it.
How dare you present facts and common sense into this discussion
거북이는 목을 내밀 때 안 움직입니다
I coined the phrase" you couldn't pay me to play this game" lol.Well maybe that was Reynad...small joke if you know who Reynad is.
Know what else all these rewlly bad low budget games are doing? They are making the bad high budget games look better than they really are.Like you go from playing Crowfall to Cyberpunk and your all blown away WOW this looks amazing.IN otherwords stick enough dumpster games beside middle income families and the middle income look like Bill Gated neighborhood.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Couple questions:
Have they fixed the lag on the map? (it used to take a split second between when u pressed the button and when the map actually opened)
Do they have in game guild functionality now? For example can you join a guild in game? When I played you had to join a guild by applying through the crowfall website and there were no social functions in game.
How about other social/group functions? Its been a while now, but I seem to remember that it was hard to actually group/ungroup before, for example.
Is the dysnc fixed? When I played last year the mob skills had a significant dysnc/lag.

Not one new account in this thread at least, any thrashing of the game is being done by the usual cast of characters.

The Guild Application process is done through the website because when you a join a guild, you will be moved to that guilds "Team" or server, and will not have the option to move to other servers. So this is handled outside the game.
Grouping has been a thing for a while now, several months at least, with the last time I played.

Lots of signs pointing to a fizzle, but we shall see
