imageBethesda's Pete Hines Apologizes To PlayStation Owners Over Starfield's Microsoft Exclusivity | MMORPG.com

Over the weekend, it was confirmed by Microsoft and Bethesda that the upcoming sci-fi game from the Maryland-based studio, Starfield, would be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Naturally, this upsets PlayStation owners who had been playing Bethesda games for years. The company's SVP of Global Marketing & Comms, Pete Hines, apologized to PlayStation yesterday during an interview with GameSpot.

As long as they make their games available on PC im fine. I own a ps4 but I hate playstation exclusives. I want to play a game with the best hardware I've got, and that's my PC. I am glad Microsoft stepped in and started making exclusives without excluding PC's.

As long as the PC version is not exclusive to Windows 10 store so they can run on Linux too then i can buy their MS exclusives on PC. After the XB360 which I still own, Microsoft stopped bringing the type of games I personally would buy a console for, to their systems (Nintendo and Sony still do). I also buy Bethesda games on PC for modding anyway so i'm a bit biased there.

I know it will be disappointing for people who only play on one system, especially in developing countries where it's far more expensive to play video games (i know that because I grew up in one). But it is what it is. MS desperately needed exclusives.

I don't understand why the apology. Microsoft users are your target audience(gee...I wonder why), just continue with your business and accept your new reality. It's not like Sony apologized for Bloodborne or DeS Remake(or anything else).

Microsoft is NOT good for gaming. They know how rabid gamers are now a days buying anything and everything advertised to them. This allows Microsoft to push games out faster with cheaper versions of these games because they still make loads of money weather AAA or not.

When i saw Microsoft pushed out Sea of Thieves for 80 bucks and then saw the state of the game,i was like FU Microsoft.I want NOTHINMG to do with Microsoft,oh and guess what Windows 11 incoming, imagine that after claiming no more Windows versions lmao.

Phil Hannibal Specter is a joke and Microsoft is out to control the entire industry behind gaming.Tim Sweeney wrote an article about how Microsoft was planning on taking over to get a piece of the pie from every single game.

Sony has leveraged Playstation "exclusives" for years. I'm speculating that this Hines fellow knows a few bigwigs at Sony so was wanting to make some sort of public concession like "not my fault" to remain good with them. I think Microsoft has been planning & playing for the long-game. There was no need to apologize & there shouldn't had been an apology. It sort of looks like Hines is trying to place an arrow in the knee of Bethesda's & Microsoft's partnership. Hines should probably just shut-up & leave-out his personal take when publicly speaking for the company.

I think Hines can easily do himself out of a job if he keeps apologizing for what their parent company is doing.

No big loss really. I haven't trusted anything that comes out of his mouth for many years.

Sony has been laying the bedrock for this sort of revolt for years. I mean they were king of proprietary trash my entire childhood. Weird cables on all their electronics, mini disc, formats and storage cards that no one else used.

bethesda has always been in microsoft's pocket, since before skyrim had timed exclusive DLC, which, while you all keep saying "if only it came to the PC" skyrim's DLC was delayed on PC as well due to microsoft exclusivity deal

so acting like if you are PC, you are fine and left out of the equation, you haven't been paying attention.

MIcrosoft's previous day 1 games on game pass haven't included the PC ports of those games. As I was subscribed for the sole reason of playing "Outriders" only for them to last minute say its not coming. So don't have faith in game pass being fulfilling, when over half its library doesn't include pc ports of games.

Bethesda's PC optimization, configuration , and options and settings have always been consoles first, PC second.

You must be new to The Elder Scrolls. It was a PC game first and it was only with Morrowind that they started porting to consoles.

Oblivion and Skyrim are the only two that were ever ported to Playstation.

The franchise is as PC-first as they come. No clue where you're getting your revisionist ideas. The first three were not even Windows games they were DOS games exclusively.

Exclusives are a good thing, and I don't see the need for an apology. Frankly, us Sony and Nintendo fans still have the better exclusives.

Strange thing to do/say. Why? Do not see a way to make anyone happy, exclusive wars been a thing for decades, Why piss off the people that control the money?

Can not see any reason for MS to want to have him do this. An exclusive is an exclusive, no reason to mention Sony system owners at all really.

Guess it could just be the times we live in.... people looking for a reason to apologize, no reason to do it, and it will hurt, but meh, lets do it anyways... just seems dumb to me.

Everything is exclusive in some place... EA has still not released the MMA games on PC... Spiderman was PS exclusive... Nintendo only does console exclusive...

Is it shit... Yes.. But it has been the state of the market since the Sega v Nintendo wars... Not looking like it will change soon either...

    So... Tough shit....

I'm sorry I can't even get through it. Good to see Microsoft giving Sony a little taste of their own nonsense.

All games launch in a buggy state. Welcome to the 21st century. Things aren't even in the same realm of simplicity that they were in a decade or two ago. Curb your cluelessness.

ALl of these games that launch are full of bugs. You're on MMORPG.com. You should be well versed in this. Even WoW had its fair share of bugs on release...

If you haven't resigned to be a beta tester for hte first months of a game's release, then you need a reality check. Just go with the flow. It will save on your therapist bill.

Microsoft is no less good for gaming than Sony, who have been far more aggressive when it comes to exclusivity deals than Microsoft has ever been. Sony has an entire gaming studio that develops games that go no where but PS4, and they do tons of timed exclusivity deals with DLC, etc.

You have to be full on r*t*rd*d to come here and act like Microsoft is the one who created this atmosphere, and as if they are "worse for gaming" than Sony.

    Must be a PS fanboi...

Posters seem to be puzzled as to why they apologized, mainly because Sony and Nintendo don't. But that's the culture here, always apologise even when there is nothing to apologize about. But that apologize first mentality is already heading to the rest of the world, it is just a matter of time before they are as over the top as we are for doing it.

I think it's awesome what Microsoft did. Eat poopoo Sony.
Now Elder Scrolls 6 should have exclusive content for everything not Sony.

I didn't see him apologizing about their PlayStation 5 exclusives. Why does everyone always bend over for Sony? Sony and Nintendo are the poster children for why we have to deal with all the game platform exclusive bullshit over the past 30 years. Maybe if Sony wasn't all about the exclusives I'd give a damn.

Totally agree! Let's get one thing perfectly clear! It's Sony that started this game exclusivity thing many moons ago to try to lock people into the Playstation eco system.

It's no different on other platforms too. Nintendo has been exclusive since day 1 and none of their 1st party games leave their consoles ever.

At least Microsoft still releases exclusive games on PC. So there's that. :)

Ah yes, arguing with randoms on the internet, what I really enjoy when i wake up. The part where they ignore all points made, paint generic delusional histories where they go back to before game consoles existed to make their point for no bias towards a specific console maker.
Even though both parties stated the continued deals made between the companies is why the buyout happened.

The biggest delusion here is "Xbox and Windows are both operated by Microsoft, so this PC vs. Xbox feud you have built in your mind is non existent."
Which just shows me or anyone reading that you have no idea about much of anything in the gaming industry. Or really any industry really. And its pointless to try to continue to argue further. You aren't worth my time.

Besides the merits of exclusivity or non exclusivity, I have no time for 'I'm Sorry' anymore. I think it used to mean something, but now at days....meh. Let's throw out a 'I apologize' to keep the masses happy and we can move on. Keep your' Mea Culpas' and just give the facts. Maybe in the future it'll mean something again, but for now. No.

    "I'm not apologizing for exclusivity.
I don't "have" to do anything.
Some of our fans are upset/angry, and I'm sorry they are. That isn't wrong, or weird. It's acknowledging how they feel.
That's it. That's my whole point."

  • KnightFalzKnightFalz Member EpicPosts: 4,522
    His apology essentially amounts to:

    *shrugs* Sorry.

It was simply a conciliatory gesture to those affected by a change in business practice, which was not uncommon before apology became the order of the day for everything.
