nah cryptic studios is a good developer and their games are successful
the game was rough, but like the article says it was beta, didnt officially launch yet
then you got people over here trying to compare it to lost ark, a korean mmo that launched officially in 2018.
This has nothing to do with Cryptic. This all about the parent companies greed. PWE is one of the worse game companies. Just look what they have done to Star Trek and Neverwinter. And don't forget about Torchlight 3.
Perfect World let their subsidiaries and partners decide on how to monetize their products. That is why STO and Neverwinter are successful as one of the most greedily monitized free-to-play games and why Torchlight 3 failed as a buy-to-play game and why Gigantic failed as a fairly monetized free-to-play game and why Remnant: From the Ashes, Torchlight 1, 2 and Hob succeeded as buy-to-play games.
The Gigantic situation is more complicated than that. They could have and should have released before Overwatch and succeeded. Unfortunately, the perpetually-cash strapped studio was forced to make a bad publishing deal with Microsoft, who delayed the release with forced Windows 10 exclusivity and then backed out of it, nearly destroying Motiga. When they were finally able to secure new publishing and finish the game, it was too late. They had the superior product, but they launched into a saturated market that they could have and should have pioneered. It's rarely the best game that wins a genre - it's the first decent one to market.
I mean it was a video game based off of a TCG which are inherently pay to win literally, you pay money for card packs and hope to get the best cards... this couldnt have gone down any other way lol.
I feel like the blame lies with WotC and PWE, not Cryptic so much. But all of them were shortsighted. The classes shouldn't feel the same. The maps shouldn't be memorizable in less than a week of play. In fact, the maps should be procedurally generated and different from session to session--or when you've left the area named in the map for more than 10 minutes like GGG does with PoE. And how do you build a believable ARPG around characters that start the game as demigods? That's what Planeswalkers are--demigods.
If they built it around the player being a regular human or other "normal" fantasy being and the character didn't reach god-like levels of power until the end of the game... that would make for a better overall game, I think.
I didn't like the combat or the randomized skills so I bailed after a couple of hours. It's pretty clear from all of the feedback and reviews that they built a mediocre ARPG around a crummy cash shop model.
In the long run it's best for lazy cash grabs like this to fail. Perfect World is 0 for their last 2 ARPGs and clearly has to accept a chunk of the blame. The lesson is to make a great game first and then profits will follow. IP isn't going to save you unless it's something like Diablo.
I feel like the game had a fun basis but they didn't really work out how to approach content. Once you finished the 5 lands, it was just repeating the same content with modifiers. The game wasn't terrible nor amazing and I did feel like with some work and content releases, it could be a good game... I guess now we'll never know.
What did they achieve exactly? Proof that they have no clue how to monetize a game without having to resort to the scummiest, most bullshit tactics and only changing course when they're confronted with that fact?
Nah. Be ashamed of your failure. These guys are either going to learn how to actually treat their customers like more than change purses, or they're going to go bankrupt. For Cryptic and their masters over at Perfect World, it's probably going to be the latter. So fuck them.
I bet all of you folks are happy now. An MMO is shutting down, just as you desired.
Just a slight correction, an ARPG is shutting down. Besides the first few months (when they tried to explain how the term MMORPG has shifted over the years), not even Cryptic called it an MMO anymore.
Also, that bet is lost, I'm certain not "all of us" are happy... I ain't, personally. It means layoffs, it means those few who liked it will lose a game; game cancels are never a good thing, on general.
Not a big loss for me, it was the first Cryptic game I avoided (besides a few hours of test run like Frodo above).
What I've found odd in the announcement however was this part:
"Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark"
Good morning, sunshine, tons of people have tried to put that wake-up call through to your deaf ears...
All along, from the initial announcement, the first previews, the betas, etc., but you ignored all.
Hell, when you finally stopped calling it an MMO and acknowledged it's just an another Diablo, that felt like a massive progress...
What I'm trying to say I guess is, while this cancel is an unfortunate outcome and not something to be happy about, its writing was on the wall right from the beginning.
You just ignored to notice it.
Regardless, I'm still a fan of your games (minus this one), though Neverwinter's Mod21 also reeks of stupid... would be a shame to see that one on the green mile too.
Back to CO and STO I guess, Risa opens tomorrow for some jetpack fun and beach parties
The game wasn’t fun at all. Even if it wasn’t an MMORPG but just an online ARPG like Path of Exile, it still wasn’t fun.
– the controls were bad, especially mouse movement
– optimization was bad even on lowest
– graphics and visuals looked boring and ugly
– free camera rotation made navigating very confusing
– playable classes were very limited and not exciting
– combat with abilities that come and go on random is not fun at all – you are left at the mercy of RNG
I’m not surprised this is happening, no wonder Cryptic also plans to kill Neverwinter with the upcoming update with level cap reduced to 20 and most of the game zones removed from the game, instead of making it better, they are making the game worse.
It's sad. This could have been a great game. If they fixed the inventory/loot mechanics to fit into a more Path of exile style and lowered the cash shop push, this could have soared to great heights..
Way to close the lid on this dumpster fire. What garbage. The monetization was trash. The gameplay was stupid. Random abilities, loot, all of it was junk.
The only thing good about this game was the IP. Magic: The Gathering and they made this absolute pile of refuse.
I hope this makes some other crap companies think twice about making something this level of garbage.
Good riddance.

Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.
It just wasn't fun. The monetization was exactly the same as Neverwinter which was pretty P2W when I tried it, not sure how it panned out in endgame in this as I only played for 10 or so hours. Even without the monetization issues the entire game just felt clunky and bad to play. Not really surprised it didn't last long.
I bet all of you folks are happy now. An MMO is shutting down, just as you desired.
The thing I find most odd about this whole situation, is that they were gauging the games ability to sink or swim off of the beta, not off of the launch.
Most people on here that didn't like this game were just as surprised by the news.
Something really wrong must have happened.
My guess is that Wizards of the Coast saw this as more damaging to their IP than it was worth allowing to continue. All speculation of course, but this is well outside of the norm for a game to cancel before it launches.
They lied and the beta was the launch with a full on cash shop. Obviously.
It preformed so badly that it got shutdown.
I know I'm happy something this garbage tier got shut down. The people who love this crap monetization and junk gameplay are not enough to keep this trash afloat. Oh no.
Don't get me wrong what really would have made me overjoyed was a good game without a cash shop in the first place, but fat chance of that happening.

Imagine if everything they added into those p2w class packs were instead added as drops to the main game. Obviously if that happened they'd probably have to go BTP like Last Epoch or Wolcen but that would've been $30-$40 more that they will be making long-term vs now at $0 + huge losses due to refunds & development costs that can never be recouped...
Cryptic was just the workers that followed orders to collect a paycheck. The real villains of this story are PW & WotC/Hasbro with their greed and complete disconnect with reality. They spent millions to develop + years of back and forth arrangements only to come up with a shallow cash shop heavy mobile-esque type game... FOR PC..

PW didn't lead the gameplay designs of Torchlight 3 or this crappy game. PW just doesn't understand what makes a great ARPG either so they let them make huge mistakes.

Tl;dr on that one - fuck Microsoft.

Full on cash shop in open beta well actually it was just an excuse to hide any criticism.
Crap like this deserves to fail.
