I obviously joined some time in 2009 for some reason. Couldn't tell you why. I've come to this site for years just for mmo news, don't really post on forums much. But when I saw the hate Ashes was getting I had to post.

lol yeah I don't expect to see Slapshot in here. Maybe he'll pop in to let us know the game isn't launched yet and it's still a scam. But that's going to get harder and harder to say as time goes on. Sooner you stop saying it, the less silly you'll look in the end.

I mean just look at that rage post by Wizardry. Just going the f off. Because Ashes is in testing. lol. the hell?
That's just how Wiz is, rages at most  everything, rarely responds to other posters, not sure he even reads anything past the OP, best to pay him no mind except for the comedy factor.

Nice. Wake me up when they hit open beta.

No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.

"However, I am not like most players. I prioritize a good world. For me, the larger the world, the better. The more beautiful that world, the better. I want to go explore. Note, I am not saying I do not like questing, dungeon diving, boss-fighting, and the like. I am simply saying those activities are not my priority.

For me, exploring is gameplay. Wandering around and discovering derelict ruins, getting lost in ancient forests, and summiting the highest peaks is content. As I see it, the developers and artists put these things in the game for the very purpose of being discovered. Just as questing is important, so too is the simple act of picking a direction and setting off."

I so miss the days where more people appreciate playing an mmorpg like this.

I think some posters may have got the wrong idea about what our attitude to CF MMO's is, we all want good MMOs coming out in the west. CoE dashed a lot of faith in that whole idea, it put a huge question mark over every indie MMO project out there.

It has meant that if there is the slightest sign of more delays or some sort of problem we have a knee jerk "here we go again" reaction. But I think that's fair, once bittern twice shy as they say.

Personally I don't pay too much attention to development, far too often what is talked about as development goes on is not even in the game come launch. Be it new content or fans perceiving some show stopping problem, so what's the point?

Crowfall has somewhat restored my faith that CF can make a decent MMO, AO has had some success and hopefully AoC and Pantheon will as well.

Yeah you're right Scot. I haven't been bitten yet because Ashes is the first mmo I've backed. If I got bit before, like some people have multiple times, I'd probably be overly skeptical too. I wasn't really considering that. Definitely understand.

You overlooked the original "poster child" of crowd funded MMORPGs SotA, understandably for sure, and a couple of never ending stories, CU and SC.

Outside of SC whose fans are endlessly throwing money at it (and weirdly enough COE) most of these games including Crowfall relied far more heavily on investors funding to continue or complete the game with crowd funding making up a fraction of the total.

So one, maybe two partial "wins" out the total to date still doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, unless of course one enjoys testing incomplete game as SC fans often tout.

In many indie previews it's the game world itself which is all place holders (cough, cough Pantheon, CU, etc) but it is looking like Ashes has a solid start on this.

Didn't Pantheon have a huge problem with placeholders bought from the asset store? There was something about different render-pipelines etc. as far as I remember.

People need to set their expectations. The only positive that it may not take 3-4 years is the fact is their studio is not hurting for money.

    2017-2021 are already 4 years.

What kind of shot was that? No i wasn't trolling, albeit it was a bit condescending on my part, but my sentiment remains, where is Mr. Slapshot? always the first to post how the developer is inept and the project is a scam.

    Yeah, thought so.

    Good write up Poorna.

While I'm not sure large expansive beautiful world is my priority, all the questing, crafting, combat, and adventuring doesn't mean much to me without it. I love exploring in Valheim for all the reasons you mention. It's encouraging to hear the Ashes world building is so lush and detailed.
I am ashamed to say graphics feature too much in my own decision about buying a game, when it should be all about the gameplay. They certainly have a solid graphical framework to build on, hopefully the rest will follow suit.

Err, he responded to you already, busy playing Crowfall, a released game even, see above.

No shame in that at all. There is a visual component to games that is important. And for me a balance between game play and visual appeal is important. For me context matters too. I love pixel art, cel shading, and a ton of other styles but I like the art style to fit what the studio is trying to communicate through their game.
I have always championed gameplay first, but now find myself becoming rather snobby if games do not meet my graphical standards. There are some great looks out there but many are just too cartoony for me. So say The Banner Saga was good but solid game play has to be there as well. "Fitting what the studio is trying to communicate" is beyond a philistine like me, it either looks good or it does not. :)

I play MMO's to live in a virtual world. That world has to be interesting and well done. The "look and feel" of the world is a primary concern. So even if a game has good gameplay, if it doesn't appeal to me as a virtual world, I won't play it. FF14 for example. The game is great, but I just don't like the artwork. Most Eastern MMO's are like that for me, just not that appealing.

The same for classes. I'll pick a class just as much by how it looks and feels, as what skills the class has.

But the game also has to be fun to play, with good gameplay.

So this one looks interesting, but I'll wait until there is a real game there. Sort of like SC, the screenshots are great, but where is the game?
