Looks like the Hungerdome MOBA mode is coming real soon

Character select page has been updated and shows your "Rank" in the Hungerdome.  As well as a button to form a group.

If this launches before the Faction Servers I am going to be really pissed.  It's hard to keep my group engaged as it is because they haven't launched the promised faction server.  If they put the MOBA game up first that might be a bridge too far.

Only so much you can do as  a small guild in the Dregs.  Not a complaint, that's what they are supposed to be like.  It's just a fact.    But there is supposed to be a 3 way Factions server... Right now there is either the Newbie Tutorial campaign... or the Dregs.  Nothing in between.

Do you know if the three way faction servers will have fort building, upgrades, and the like? In the beta they did not so the campaign was kind of meh.

They haven't even confirmed that they are launching one as far as I know.

The fact that you need to call people names like "fanbois" because they pointed out the obvious fact that the game is live, is problem on your end, not theirs.

Are MOBAs still a thing? Is it still make a MOBA or BR and guaranteed success?
  • lashlashlashlash Member UncommonPosts: 32
Hungerdome is a Battle Royale, not a MOBA. It has none of the Dota/MOBA tropes like creep lanes, towers, building destruction, or even 1 team vs 1 team. It's 12 teams duking it out with resource gathering, typical Battle Royale gameplay.

I think the key point is that it's not an MMORPG.   Not whether it fits as a MOBA or Battle Royale.

I don't think it pretends to be. Just like Fortnite Battle Royale didn't pretend to be an MMO from the spin-off of the MMO.

It's still a potential entry point into the game, as it exposes the combat and some mechanics. It might even be better than the tutorial in the game to explain some of the game systems.

Some cross-pollination if designed well could also be beneficial.

Yeah that Fortnite Battle Royale worked as such a GREAT introduction for the "main" game that they pretty much abandoned the "main" game.  Thanks for the perfect example.

Fortnite: Save the World as the survival coop game still got more than a million people to pay and play the game. I don't think that game is abandoned either. Just overshadowed by the size of the spinoff. It wasn't an MMO either.

Doing this for an MMO is a worthwhile experiment. Ashes of creation have dabbled with their Apocalypse BR as well. It was probably seen as low hanging fruit to implement something, since there are tools in the game already to set up the campaign worlds, this is just instance campaign worlds for 12 groups of 5. It might even be a good test environment before scaling to larger 12 team battles, which might end up being campaigns.

Truth be told, the Throne War/World vs World/Realms vs Realms MMO-esq style game that Crowfall was originally marketed as, simply is not popular anymore, IIRC Crowfall was like 6 or 7 years in development, the Throne War games fell out of favor, however, BR games, are still very popular, and it just makes sense if you can copy-paste what you already made for one game into another, to do so, as that will generate profits and keep the company going.

For the most part, the only people even remotely unhappy with this addition to Art Cafts stable of games seems to be their KS founders, who, no doubt are just being entitled drama queens and the fact that the KS project launched and they got what they paid for, still does not make them happy.

What is the fear here? That they commit too many resources to this and not the main game? If this was a money spinner, they get new resources and spin it off. The Crowfall main game experience will stand on its own merits, just like every other game.

Also as a company, if they make something and it's successful, they should commit resources to it. At the moment it is integrated into the main game and is extremely coupled, and potentially any resources and learnings are translated into the main game. Things like combat balancing, interface, any small scale battles. It's all in a controlled environment to inform that stuff.

It's a win for the main game if people can have instanced tests done for you in this environment. It's also potentially a better tutorial environment for the PvP than the tutorial in the main game, which just goes over systems with no context.

It's pretty simple to me.   When I bought the game it was supposed to have a newbie campaign, a FvFvF campaign, a 5-12 way faction campaign, a GvG campaign and a FFA campaign.

My group bought it to focus on the faction campaigns.

They do not currently have any faction campaigns.

So no, they should NOT put any focus on a moba/BR game until they put out what they actually said they would.

But sadly, by the time they do it will be too late.   Looks like they even collapsed one of their 2 West servers today :(   Just one now.

New World Beta starts Tuesday, my whole guild is heading over.   When that ends, CF has a chance to attract us back if their is an actual Faction server, but if not, that may be the last chance.

I think they didn't want to split the playerbase, and funnel people into giving feedback on GvG. The clamouring for GvG (Guilds vs Guild) might have been greater than FvF at launch, and they want to funnel everyone into GvG and alliancing to create organic "factions". Also GvG is more unique to Crowfall. There are plenty of other games that people have experienced FvF, but GvG is more unique.

Sure there are complaints about the zergs, but this is where feedback comes in. I think people who otherwise wouldn't have tried it have given it a shot since that is what is there, and they ended up enjoying it more than expected due to the metagames you can play without going for straight conquest victory. It's good to get feedback from as wide a group as possible, as well. You see it in the feedback on the forums and in the streams as well. It also reflects some of the "politics" social meta-game that could make for some interesting aspects. Once people get zero rewards from the mega guilds because they are too big and everything gets funnelled or diluted, they might think about splitting their zergs. Time will tell.

The chat interface and communication within the existing faction interface is a bit too barebones as well. Just translate what Sky Point is right now to see what that would be like. You can barely communicate with someone next to you unless you're pre-arranging. They need to smooth out the communication systems for within Factions. I think they went with GvG because more coordinated groups are already in Discord so they don't rely on the poor interface right now.

For me, I'm an Australian player. We have neither FvF or GvG servers. For now we're content with Sky Point and forays into the US West server GvG (Dregs), and it's good enough. I would have thought FvF was the better option before, but GvG has some interesting dynamics in it, and I don't worry about winning the conquest, but finding other purposes in the Dregs.

Err, if the factions servers haven't launched yet then the backers didn't get what they paid for...yet.

But I have to ask, in what world are paying customers who are still waiting for full delivery "entitled drama queens?"

I'd say they definitely are "entitled" to receive the full promised scope prior to delivery of any additional game modes.

    False choice.

Instead of "funneling" into the Dregs, people are leaving the game.

The proof is clear as day.  The population is shrinking, they even closed the US West 2 server today.  Sure they can spin it back up if it's needed, but it can't be a good sign to close one of 2 servers for that region. It's not like they opened a 2nd US West Dregs server...

It's 9PM on the west coast now and the population on https://www.crowfallstatus.com/ shows 340 players total on the West Dregs.  All the West players didn't "funnel" into the West Dregs, they quit.

They should have had ONE Dregs server and then one Faction ruleset server.

They should have had ONE Dregs server and then one Faction ruleset server.

They closed the server because they have 2 extra US servers from launch, and in order to maintain some population on the Gods Reach servers, they got rid of one US server from the starter populations.

Assuming Crowfall status is accurate (it isn't now), they are peaking around 500 players concurrent which is plenty, but also perhaps what the devs want to ensure is maintained.

Are you saying that if an FvF campaign was on at the same time, that the numbers for GvG would be the same? One server FvF and one GvG still splits the playerbase if what you want to do is to collect feedback and funnel people. This way they have two experiments on different servers that they can compare to as well.

This is also assuming they have a Faction vs Faction ruleset ready to go at launch. Perhaps they had to design and choose one ruleset over another because it isn't that trivial to just release a balanced ruleset, so they concentrated on one first and want to collect data on it.

What I am saying is that if they had the Faction campaigns which were actually promised and many people bought, and even started playing on the 9th assuming would be there, many of the people that have left, would still be playing.   Maybe they would have played faction and moved to Dregs, maybe they would have stayed Faction.  But right now they are LEAVING.

Tuesday the NW Beta hits, and even more will leave.

Overall total player base has been trending down.  People are leaving the game. They are spinning down servers.

They should deliver what people BOUGHT before they launch a MOBA/Battle Royale game.  They SHOULD have done this at launch, now that people have left, will they come back for the Faction servers?   I don't know.  it will probably depend on how well New World is received.  They had a chance to grab people from launch but that has been squandered.

For the most part, the only people even remotely unhappy with this addition to Art Cafts stable of games seems to be their KS founders, who, no doubt are just being entitled drama queens and the fact that the KS project launched and they got what they paid for, still does not make them happy.

Little confused, the Dregs are not faction vs faction?

New World Beta starts Tuesday, my whole guild is heading over.   When that ends, CF has a chance to attract us back if their is an actual Faction server, but if not, that may be the last chance.
I am sure your 9 person guild will be the keynote that the whole game sits upon.

Bye.. feel free to slam the door on the way out.

Dude.  I have played the game 10 times more than you have and accomplished 10 times as much.  If you think we are an isolated case you are far from reality.  They literally collapsed one of the 2 West Coast servers already.  The forums are littered with people asking for the Faction servers. Not just small guilds, but some Investors and folks there since day 1.

Maybe you need to have ACE explain to you the different server types.  You can find them on the Kickstarter page.  If you think they are the same, then maybe the Developers can explain it better.
