I dont get the hype, it's not like it's a new game... But I am glad people are enjoying it.

14 is a lot like WoW in many regards so it's a bit ironic that all these players are acting like it's something SO different from WoW.

From my experience I found 14 to be way more grindy and time sinky than WoW. I haven't played WoW since Cataclysm and I last played 14,  2 years ago.

For my money and time, ESO is a much better option but again that's my opinion.

What is the lesson you think Blizzard/WoW is going to get from this?

Add more cutscenes?  Make the game even easier?  Focus on Consoles?

Its not like some hardcore game with all these new amazing features is sneaking up on them.  FFXIV is basically wow with cutscenes.

Even if Blizzard started right now, it will take years before anything substantial would materialize.

Unfortunately I believe the lessons Blizzard is really going to take from this is, Start paying more streamers in their advertising budget, push the game towards phones to appeal to a larger audience.

I've said this to my friends. FF14 does so much right. What it does, it does incredibly well. The graphics are clean. The class fantasy is exceptional. The music is so well done that it alone can immerse you in what you're doing (cutscenes, boss fights, dungeon runs). Everything is so tight, with very little room for error.

However, it's this tightness that makes me feel it lacks player agency and creativity during content and it's a feeling I can't shake off a lot of the time. It's the theme park to end all theme parks, in my opinion.

Social housing and the insane things you can do with furniture is probably the exception to this tightness. Even then it's very well done, the best I've seen in a long time.

When in comparison to WoW, I think I let WoW get away with a lot of things. This may be due to nostalgia from when I started playing (Or even Warcraft 3, my first RTS and introduction to the Warcraft series) and how I made lifelong friends through it... Which I can honestly say, I've not experienced through FF14.

But that's probably not an issue with the game and the people who play it, but instead with me as I get older and unable to deal with a prevalent tween mentality a lot of the people I met/meet on FF14 seemingly have.  :#

That they need to pucker up and kiss the popular streamers' asses more than they already do? :)

And about cut scenes... WOW already started doing that a few expansions ago. Not only that but in the last couple of xpacs everything is voiced and there are cut-scenes galore.

They keep updating and upgrading with every expansion. Hell Shadowlands even added RTX shadows.

Whether you like it or not, streamers have massive influence these days. Would FFXIV be blowing up right now if Asmon didn't play it? Very seriously doubt it.

I'm not them, but it's pretty obvious that Blizzard doesn't really care about the community when it comes to WOW.  They could stop making the same mistakes over and over again by adding new systems that they spend the rest of the expansion trying to fix.  They could figure out how to stop making the game feel like a chore with all of the daily grinds solely meant to keep people subscribed.

Players see through to their real plans.  I'd start by firing Ion and bring in someone that doesn't communicate like a robot.  After that I'd  bring in some of the biggest content creators and make sure the next person in charge understands and wants to fix the problems.

None of this will happen of course.  Retail WOW will continue to bleed players every expansion and classic WOW will hit a wall with WOTLK's last raid.  although based on surveys, I expect them to scale the difficulty in classic to be much harder and launch new servers with that difficulty.  They may even spend some time creating classic+ content for vanilla or WOTLK.

On a more general note it fascinates me how people decide what causes this or that effect. Rarely will you find a sole cause for anything, but people will latch on to what they see as the Big Cause and declare it from the rooftops. Even if you realise there is a complexity of causes at play It is very difficult to work out their hierarchy, yet people seem quite certain they know what factors are the most important.

It seems we all think we are experts on everything that happens in life, when in fact we are groping for the truth with hardly any evidence to go by. :)

I didn't see it mentioned on the site or in the thread (maybe glossed over it so sorry in advance if it was already mentioned), but FFXIV is currently having a 14 day free log in period for people who played in the past.

I am sure many MMO's benefit from those leaving the MMO with the biggest player base out there, for me Lotro was the MMO that came after WoW. I am sure players go the other way as well, FFIXV to WoW, not sure what all the fuss is about. As long as players are enjoying their MMO, everyone can be happy.

It is quite reasonable to control the digital download to ensure server stability, more MMOs should do that. There may be a server upgrade as mentioned but this is SE's version of MMO crowd control and it makes perfect sense.

I agree. It seems to me that many think you aren't allowed to play and enjoy both games. I did for years until I stopped playing FFXIV. No game is perfect, and new players to FFXIV will find that out in time. Right now, the game is new and fun to them. The newness will wear off and soon enough you will start seeing people complaining about that game.

Streamers in general are trend chasers, right now it's popular to bash wow and announce your moving to FFXIV. When there is a new trend, they will follow that.

I personally know one streamer who follows the trend and is playing FFXIV, but what he doesn't mention to his followers is that he is still playing wow. I'm willing to bet this is more common than one might think.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

And then those who PAY A FEE to watch some one play a game that you want to play and be good at. I mean, you get it right? YOU ARE WATCHING SOME ONE DOING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. Like watching porn I guess ?

Actually, you don't get it. Watching someone play a game is a spectator activity. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with wanting to play a game you want to be good at.

Though it's possible that people want to get tips and tricks and see how people do things.

I mean, based on what you said, absolutely NO sports games should ever be watched.

Nor should one watch golf. Or watch racing. or watching people hang gliding.

Or heck, playing poker, or skiing, or basically anythign where what is happening has some interest.

And I guess you watch porn so you can improve your technique? Perhaps re-think that one.
Guides and reviews are quite different from "me playing games and making gurning faces".

I don't play for England, if I did no doubt we would have won the European Cup, but as I did not get selected I have to watch them on the TV to see them play.

Whereas I can play my favourite MMORPG any time and don't see any need to watch someone else doing what I do. That's why people watch the sports you mention, I didn't get chosen for the World Series Poker Tournament either, so will have to watch that. ;)

I watched a lot of videos when I was playing FFXIV because as a healer I was very worried about not knowing what to cure and the tactics in each dungeon. I made sure I knew every dungeon inside out because I was responsible for the whole group. This is actually very important in FFXIV because if you make mistakes you wipe and in pugs you get kicked.

Unfortunately they expect you to know and we explain it to people who don't but if they keep messing up and especially if they are arrogant about it you will get kicked. I think  expecting people to at least take the time to study a dungeon is not asking too much because you're wasting everyone else's time when you don't.

It may sound harsh but as a healer I took the time and I feel others should too. Responsible team mates listen and try to follow instructions and don't blame others especially the healer when they die. Most times the loss of one team mate does not result in a wipe but if it happens more than 2 times I have voted to kick the person out.

I understand the point you are making but sometimes you have to watch the guides. As an example (Which Cheyane posted above), FFXIV as a healer. I played FFXIV as healer and the reason most (well ok then me) play as a healer is because you like helping people in MMO's.

If you go into a dungeon in FFXIV without first  researching/watching a video of that dungeon or having someone in the team giving you concise instructions on where to stand, when to move etc,  in particular as a healer, you will get your team killed and wont be helping anybody and probably kicked if your in a PUG.

I have watched those sort of videos myself they are guides like I mentioned. Streamers are not putting out guides every day though you might get a tip in each "instalment" is it really worth having to listen to all the waffle?

It'd make the point stronger if the person writing this article actually showed any semblance of experience playing wow.

The idea that WoW players will look at ffxiv and see it as a fix for wow's problems is so ignorant of how both games work that it hurts. FFXIV "fixes" wow's problems by having basically 1/10th of the serious/hardcore/challenging content , the player base pretending the pvp being awful doesn't matter and having dumbed down systems like class designs (the tanks are virtually all the same class in ffxiv nowadays) and gearing system (compare wow's variety of effects and builds to ffxiv linear stat increases) , no shit if you have no complexity the system barely needs any balance to begin with, because THERE IS NO ITEMS TO BALANCE AROUND.

The influx was unambiguously because of asmongold too, and it won't last.

Also imagine pointing to a crappy website store that runs out of DIGITAL KEYS (HOW?!?!?!??!?!) as a positive for square enix or ffxiv and pretending it's  anything other than a rank display of technical incompetence or short sight

enjoy either game all you want but stop making these nonsensical absurd points

The ffxiv community has some insane levels of inferiority complex, when's the last time you saw a WoW personality try and write cope manifestos?

Stop that shit. Asmongold didn't fucking bring in every single new player. People who keep saying this really push the toxicity that is fucking Twitch and the streaming world in general. Believe it or not, the world is more than just Twitch.

It may have brought some people, but you're fucking lying to yourself if you think it brought every new person.
Right the activity statistics just happened to shoot up like never before coincidentally and precisely with asmongold playing the game.

    Just a big coincidence

Sounds like you'd do very well in wow raiding. That great attitude you have is mandatory and the only requirement, you have that and everyone is more than willing to work with anyone who doesn't want to waste other players time, basically anyone who's head is in the game is part of the team. It's funny, outside wow it's a toxic nightmare, in game everyone i play with is quite level headed.

You mentioned healer which reminded me a bit of the difference between wow and ffxiv in that how much more forgiving ffxiv is overall.

Grabbed the game launch day as i do for every new mmorpg in case it's a big hit and then i have bragging clout rights of "I'VE BEEN PLAYING SINCE DAY ONE" so i can win all my arguments online, well beta peeps got me beat. For sure i'm just joking.

I do launch for every mmorpg becasue it's new checking it out, so i played for about a month'ish and hit a dungeon no one ever went in to, was a known problem but...

because the game is so hard on rails, so linear, so story driven and this dungeon was mandatory to continue, i literally could not proceed any further. I even switch over to healer and still no bites, so stopped playing.

Returned at some point much later on and logged in and thought o crap that problem, may as well que up so within first couple minutes of being logged in i signed up for the dung hoping i get in at some point that night and OMG was instant i was in woot!!! Now i can play the game!

Anyway obv i have no clue how to dps and i'm trying to figure what i had on bars, spells, and ok here is one but did so little damage, we were on the first/second boss, and i be like the healer is total f'ing dufus, one guy down, but we beat the boss, then on the way to next one is (hard to recall exactly) but at some point it dawned on me, I"M THE DUFUS lmao i was the healer lmao.

Anyway i do sry in chat, explain, and the most helpful bunch of peeps to ever play an mmorpg. Totally helped me through, next dung new peeps, i explain straight up and once again so helpful, and around the 3rd, 4th dung i wasa getting my mojo back. The thing is, in wow, it's not forgiving in that way in that we were well into the run without a healer.

However the peeps in wow are no different, just got to find the right guild, and the game opens right up for people with a good positive attitude.

I tried out current WOW when I played classic BC last month and I made it two quests in and uninstalled. Its a shallow shell of its former self.

So let's get this straight, you don't like WoW because it's too "shallow"
    But you like FFXIV instead....

    ..............

    Is this a fucking joke?!

Even if someone was to concede that wow is in any way more shallow than it was in earlier versions (just no, the class design of modern wow is so much more intricate and complex than anything you had in vanilla or tbc) then how much more is FFXIV then?!?!

The game, since heavensward (its first expansion) ended has unambiguously, and BY THE DEVS OWN WORDS been made repeatedly easier in an attempt to appease to a wider casual crowd. The tank classes got so gutted all of 4 of them are now basically the same with slightly different dps rotations for flavor. The healer classes got pruned to the point where you can't even control your pet anymore as a scholar, managing rng as an AST is gone and all of them got around HALF of their damage abilities (the vast majority of which were NOT redundant) remove.

On top of this the risk of making mistakes was essentially removed, again, by the devs own words, to remove the gap between the best and worst performing IN ALL CLASSES. All sense of timing and urgency removed, make a mistake? who cares you only get a 5% dps loss, can't have anyone have anything to strive to achieve here :)

Gearing? Couldn't even keep tanks being able to use dps accessories , one of the very few gameplay choices this game actually ever had  and that was still very mild, because some players might feel confused, can't have anyone actually think for 5 seconds :( big nono, just linear stat increases that barely matter even at the highest level, gotta keep that mousepad and keyboard nice and drooly  o:)

Like the game if you want, just don't make these insanely detached from reality , to an almost objectively measurable degree, comparisons .

The ffxiv community has some insane levels of inferiority complex, when's the last time you saw a WoW personality try and write cope manifestos?

I'm feeling the whole ffxiv is just another mob mentality, the lemmings be out of control again, first ffxiv compared to wow is basically and apple oranges comparison.

ffxiv is a single player game with other people around, literally!

Wow although has loads of content for solo players, but even they have the FREEDOM in game to do whatever they want, and it excels at hard af content for people who want to be challenged.

This is no different then that F76 explosion, people just love to be a follower, and this is like when eso came out, wow is dead the new king is here, same bs, ffs ffxiv is a CONSOLE GAME, like omg. WOW IS A SKILL game. Apples and Oranges.

The reason i feel the mass exodus fairly tale is blown out of proportion is that there is no difference in game of the amount of people that I'm normally used to being around, if anything seems more crowded than usual, as we are getting further in to 9.1 it just keeps filling up more and more?

Sometimes i think, including me, we seriously can't even remotely comprehend how many people actually play all these mmorpg's, AO is still alive, right, so yeah millions of people over night are not going to go omg ffxiv is so much better, i'm not, no one else in the guild isn't, the most difference is we lost some players to BCC, not ffxiv. The only reason the servers are packed is people can play for "FREE", lmao, make em pay, there be plenty of room again. Was a good marketing strategy.

Well ofc, anyone bouncing off the wall what i'd like to say but never seem to be able to articulate that well writing it out, like, yes, obv i'll lobby their post.

Problem with sites like this is, it's not really full of mmorpg "players", it's full of mmorpg wanderers looking for the next shiny.

I just want to talk to fellow players about the game, talk shop, and when one comes out of the woodwork on this site you're damn straight i'm going to let them know they are appreciated.

I have a wow forum and wowhead account and yeah that's becoming far more attractive place to spend my time posting, different name though as i don't want any of this toxicity to ever show up in my game world, also found another site and yeah lots of game talk there and yeah, i mean it's just so nice to be around other level headed players of our fav mmorpg.

Over a decade ago i played two mmorpg's that's it, it's all you needed, enter wow, and every developer just wanted wow pie, all they thought was, make incredible shallow stupid easy game, people give you tons of money.

The entire genre became "Hit Button I Win!!!", especially ffxiv, but wtf wow has only become harder, deeper, an extremely complex beast, OMG why i got in to mmorpg in the first f'ing place.

I don't want to play several different games, i want one mmorpg to call home with a second one as a back up, but with today's tech not as necessary, and that is SWG:L.

Playing one all the time has value, creates meaning, purpose, everything counts forever, it is the purest fucking point of an mmorpg, a home, always building new memories, friends, extended family, work together, play together, not bounce around them like a pinball screaming to hard i want to pay my way, thank you cash shops for bending me over and giving it to me hard, anything is better than actually having to play, especially with others.

Pretty sure i'm going to love this new site i've been monitoring, all wow fans, i've known about it but didn't know it was so wow heavy, some awesome reading there, all shop talk, and yeah i'm just not going to get that here with the plethora of haters.

Haters always gotta barf out all over the internet their crap, i mean the only positive poster here is Robin, and yea, y'all trash talk her articles which is so f'ing rude. So what? she loves the game, wow just wow my dudes. I'll pop up for her articles but outside that...

    Bows to RLWD.

GAWD it's so nice to have someone on these forums that knows what the f they are talking about. Lots of great posters here as well but lately i've been thinking of totally going 100% in to the blizz ecospere, just hang, post and talk shop there, so tired of people not willing to admit that wow is the only real mmorpg left. Took me a decade to realize this, cause i'm thick as a brick, but i got there lmao.

Just a thought here, but you admit to being "thick as a brick" that you are a decade behind everyone else.  Is it too hard to think that its possible that it will take you another decade to finally catch up to where many people are currently saying WoW sucks now?

    Keep living in your bubble.
