A stealthy ambush in NW open world PvP

New world has a good stealth system - there is no magical stealth invisibility here - where crouching lowers the visibility distance of your health bar and faction icon and being prone lowers the distance even further. Your character can still be seen though so the solution for stealth? Lie down pprone in bushes.

This video (not mine) shows how you can use that in world PvP to ambush a roaming pack of reds.

2 seconds in and i already see a fail tha tturns me off.
ICONS over player heads should not be there.

As to stealth,,pointless,,everyone is still in whcka mole mode ,spam pvp,,very little if any skills used.I would NEVER stand in an open field and play whacka mole with my life.Since it is nothing like i would want to pvp i would never find it fun.
Friendly fire has ALWAYS been a part of pvp and should remain so,,icons are like hand holding
There ius just too many flaws in pvp designs to make for really good pvp, this  video is no different than watching 15 year old combat within Lineage 2 as two factions fight in front of a castle on an open field playing whacka mole.

it is like 1`-2/10 for good pvp not even close to being good.I could draw it up and lay it all out how to design really good pvp but it is not my job and too late for yet another pvp game.
This type of pvp from the develoeprs stand point is nothing more than flag plaeyrs for pvp...ther eyou go now go fight each other,,a very lazy approach to design.

I haven't gotten into the details yet, but stealth should be based on a few things, like what armor you are wearing. Are you wearing heavy armor that clanks when you walk?

You carrying an 8 ft giant ax? Not stealthy.

And there should be skills so that some people are better at stealth than others.

Oh, and I'm assuming you can turn off nameplates. If not, they need to enable that.

That's the traditional MMO way of doing it and IMO it's terrible design because the typical MMO stealth, which is more like D&D invisibility, is a huge advantage in PvP.

So much so that ESO threw their hands up in the air and gave invisibility to everyone. You can improve it a bit with armor skills (and it isn't light armor that gives the best improvements, it's actually medium armor) class skills, etc. but not so much relative to basic stealth.

It doesn't really matter much in PvE other than allowing you to avoid combat if you want, but giving it to some and not others is awful for PvP balance.

I see what NW is doing with it as an improvement over other systems. Hiding in the bushes crouching or prone is more believable and strategic without being OP, IMO.

Any aspect of gameplay like this should be down to how well the gameplay plays, not if you are carrying a two handed or a dagger. But the weapon may be significant, the dagger might have a better power set for stealth for example, but as long as that plays well, just doing combat design in a game because of realism and you end up with a guy inside a tree (did that in DAOC, bug though) who can't stealth because he has a big two hander.

Nice ambush, now can enemy not see their name plates over the bush they were hinding in?  I assume they couldn't?

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

No they can't see the nameplates.

That's the unique way they do it - crouch reduces the distance at which your name plate can be seen and prone makes it so that they need to be almost on top of you to see it.

The character's body has the normal visibility range though, hence the need to use bushes, boulders, etc., in addition to being crouched or prone, to be truly hidden.

Toward the end of the video you see one guy they're chasing try to hide in the bushes by going prone but of course it didn't work because they all saw him do it and it doesn't trigger some kind of invisibility. Bad move. They just went into the bushes after him and killed him in seconds.
