Well if I can get to fly WITHOUT donating or buying a "package" then I would say the title is correct otherwise it is misleading if not a lie.

I backed this game years ago with one of their early, somewhat inexpensive ($35) "play now" backer packs. I can't get the game to run worth a damn, ever. I uninstall, reinstall, log in and get like 8 FPS while trying to get out of my bed and end up logging trying to open the door to walk out.

I REALLY wish they would just kick out a finished product, but I don't know how good it will actually be if they ever do.

Oh boy, a chance to try a game which was supposed to be launched in 2015, a game which has no projected release date because should it actually go live they would have obligations to the customers.

If you have a decent gaming rig with SSD, this is your chance to try it out. I pledged one of the starter packs back in 2015 and test out changes once a year during these free fly events. Mining mechanic/loop is interesting and you can fly a prospector to try it out. Still lots of bugs, but I can usually play a few hours without issue. I'll open a few bug reports and uninstall end of week. Can't say I'm happy with the pace of development, but I want it to succeed, so will do my (modest) part.

You can, its a free fly, you dont need to buy anything, just create an account, add the code and fly.

Even to my jaundiced view on SC, the Free Fly promos are great marketing.

the ships on your account are their own thing, if you use the free fly and add the code you should get those extra ships yo be able to spawn and fly them.

Oh boy. A company letting everyone test/play its latest build several weeks per year so potential backers have all information in hands to either join now or during another free event.
By next Q1 2022, three new gameplay are going to be added among many others features.
If alpha is not for you, fine, but many are interested in SC, including during development.

Shame than a company don't deliver copy/paste of games we have seen since two decades /s
