AoC and SW werent BAD games, but overall i dont think Funcom handles its games right. They're always unfinished, buggy messes with scattershot game design. I'm pretty sure there's some some very talented people at the company, but I don't really trust them overall.
Sadly I've been Funcommed far too many times to ever trust them again, even though I do miss the years in both AO and AoC.
AO was the first love of my MMO life. I met some seriously awesome people in that game, had a lot of great times even playing as a Trader. But the fact that Funcom *seriously* mismanaged that game and then learned absolutely fuckall from that when it came to AoC... well.
It sucks. Because I do want to log back into AO and hang around the Borealis Grid-exit dealing Wrangles to the addicts once again as Seth "Pestillence" Walrus, and knowing that Funcom managed to chase off the community so badly is painful.
I would love a sequel to Age of Conan or The Secret World that fixes everything that was wrong with those games while moving the story forward.
I'd love single player versions of those. Let's be real. The best parts of those games were mostly either single player or IP oriented. So...cut out the middleman.
Who is actually still getting excited about the Conan IP?
Probably everyone who grew up reading Conan books and comics and are into games.
I'd expect most of the people who grew up reading Howard's version of Conan are in their graves by now. (Weird Tales - 1932 was the first Conan story. Howard committed suicide in 1936). Most people who claimed to read Conan actually read stories by Lin Carter and L. Sprague de Camp in the late 60s; the Marvel Conan comics of the 70s; or even later the Dark Horse comics from 2003-2018. I am in the Carter&Camp pile.
Doing a deep dive into the original pulp magazines is well worth the effort. Check with a local college library for compiled and bound collections. It's a great alternative to certain classes you'd rather avoid. And a great way to spend time at the library without actually doing anything. (At least, til closing time).
I'd recommend avoiding any of Howard's boxing stories, though. Stick with Kull, Conan, and even Soloman Kane.

I grew up on the Conan the Barbarian movie, I was 6 years old when I first saw it, it is forever inprinted into my memory.
Is that the one where James Earl Jones turns into a snake?
Yes, with the Riddle of Steel and the epic quote when asked what is best in life answered, "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!"

Excellent movie.
No way is that a serious favourite of yours, calling you out on that right here.
Secret World and Conan would be awesome reworks. If they did a complete overhaul, I would be forced to buy them both. Secret World is such a refreshing departure from classic fantasy/scifi that that alone makes it worth the effort to keep it going. Conan is Conan and only Crom knows why it hasn't been given a major rework long before now.
My avatar is twinkling. Please some REH love. Also, Anarchy Online I didn't play, so a sequel/remake would excite me to try.
Now... if they put all these characters from various IPs into a single Fortnight type battle royal mode game... part of my soul will die.
This statement is a little worrying "are currently overseeing the development of an unannounced game which will COMBINE many of the characters in the Robert E. Howard universe"
Solomon Kane and Conan are two different fictional universes.

Why not? I've loved Conan since I was a kid and read mostly the Carter and de Camp books. I've always found the perspective of Howard and his debate with Lovecraft about society's contribution towards social corruption to be very interesting.
I also greatly enjoyed Robert Adams Horseclans series for a while. Stephen Donald's first few Covenant series up until White Gold Wielder. Anne McCaffery and all of her Dragon Riders and Harper series. Never enjoyed Lovecraft that much, it was just too twisted for me. I enjoyed the first 2 Dune novels but much like reading Stephen King, they get sloggy in the middle. I never made it through the third one.
The problem I have with Funcom is they over promise and under deliver while charging out the ass for their games. Their service games are way over monetized in my opinion.
I am quite happy to say I was wrong then; I like to think I have a handle on the personality of posters who have been with us for ages, but clearly it is not as good as I thought it was.

Guess one thing about me. Go on. I dare you. :P

I am not going to dismiss anything until I see it, but I guess this article would be better titled Tencent acquires the Conan IP.
Tortage was so much fun then the game ended

Solomon Kane would be outstanding! Now that's something that I'd really look forward to!
