Is New World good or just overhyped by non MMO players?

I haven't followed it at all, just flown under my radar.... and honestly after 15 years of waiting for an MMO, I've given up and hardly followed gaming in general in years. I barely see any chat about it from MMO players though, it just seems to be all these streaming Twitch types, who I avoid. They're the new generation that love screaming into the camera, every new game seems made for them these days. Is It just the latest fad made for them? Like the next Rust or whatever survival open world game is popular or something? Or is it a proper MMO that old hardcore MMO are actually liking? 

It just looks so bland to me and it is really hard to find good info on how the game is structured. 

I just find it so bizarre how I've really wanted a new MMO all this time, yet this one just doesn't buzz me in the slightest. But maybe I'm right to ignore it? I just don't see any buzz in the traditional community.

Whether you consider it good or not will always depend on the criteria by which you want to judge the game.

The main thing I'd say about all the hype is that this is the first AAA MMORPG released by a western studio since 2014. Regardless of whether the game is good or not, this was always going to generate a massive buzz. With Amazon pushing the twitch angle, it only amplifies the situation.

The most common comment I've seen from old school mmo'ers has been "its got good bones", and I would echo that statement. What is in the game is reasonably good, there just isn't a huge amount actually in the game. Those bones need some flesh and skin added. But saying that, most mmos are in a similar situation when they launch.

I made it a hour and half before I refunded. The graphics aren't that good, the armor and clothes clip through each other. The combat seemed to be a dumbed down version to eso which is already pretty easy. The crafting and gathering was just copy and paste from ark. It seemed like a really bad copy of a bunch of games before it. The character creator was God awful. 

Nothing good about it in my book, there are way better mmorpg. Eso and swtor have better stories, ff14 and eso both have better crafting by a lot, and both of those have bad crafting in my book. 

The games so simple a 6 year old could win at it and understand it. 

So yep over hyped garbage if you asked me.

It's not without it's issues. I think it's over hyped but any current gen MMORPG player will be happy with it. There is alot of walking around and way points are important. "Good" could mean different things to different people though. To me I like it  but what does that mean to anyone else? Sub par graphics and getting stuck in rocks isn't even a game changer for me but it might be for somebody else.

Its very sandboxy. You craft, gather, fight some generic mobs. And you can do some PVP if you want.

Its all done decently well. I think the biggest appeal is that the game is new and that people are playing it.

My opinion is that if you haven't found an mmo that you like in the last 15 years then you do not like mmos.

Of course the first hour and a half is easy, you would have barely made it out of the starter area, and I am not sure how much crafting you could have possibly done in that time....Assuming you made it to a  main town you would still have to gather resources and what not to even try to craft.  In 1.5 hours not sure how you could have experienced much honestly.  The graphics are good for an MMO, and i think the combat is less clunky than ESO.  There are a lot of crafting options in New World but I am not familiar with ARK.  You can add items w/ perks to your recipes and even if you craft the same item one could have a gear score of say 200 and one could be 240.  The higher your level the better chance you have of getting the better item.  Then each town has its own crafting stations which have to be upgraded by the player factions.  You can have all the resources you want, but if no one upgrades the stations tier levels you cant do anything with them.  I believe you can only upgrade one station per town / day.  As far as combat you carry 2 weapons and each weapon has 2 skill trees., but you can only choose 3 total skills for each weapon.  You level the weapons up by using them.  So for example you can shoot something with a bow and switch to a rapier or whatever once it gets in melee range.  You have dodge / block mechanics.  Only issue I have w/ combat is switching weapons is not super fluid there is a delay and sometimes it seems to go back to the first weapon.  Some of the quests start to get tough.  Some of the mini-bosses are hard and you have a lot of quests where you search in small areas for chests and what now.  These areas have a lot of NPCs crowded together and you can get overwhelmed if not careful.  I healed the first dungeon and didnt have any issues, but the others in my group were good and well organized.  I dont PVP or havent yet so I cant comment on that, but the people in the game seem to enjoy it

I'm enjoying my time so far with it.  If it doesn't look like your kind of game, then avoid it.  If you want something new that you can take slow then try it.

I'm with some of the others and say this will all depend on what you're looking for and the lens you're trying to frame the game in. Personally, the game has plenty for people to do AND enjoy for the 40$ price tag, so if you're trying to compare it to GW2 or ESO at their launches, it holds well. I'm not familiar with WoW's base game launch but I can speak on FFXIV's ARR re-launch and say its a pretty solid foundation that will depend on how soon they release their 'first patch' (by today's standards), but its also fair to keep in mind that this is a b2p title and FFXIV is p2p, so you're not obligated to pony up cash if you want to check out updates at a later date (assuming they dont go the ESO route with that). None of the 'greats' were 'born' great at launch imo (especially with GW2 and ESO).

Tl;dr: game has enough content that wont get eclipses when a new patch comes out for the price tag.

I think there are a lot of players who skill ceiling and pressure handle point is very low and for them you don't need much to satisfy them. But if you were to compare this to good MMORPG you see how bad the game actually is - NW armors are bad, group content is lackluster, enemies are dull, combat is bad, pvp is optin, cashshop. Only good thing about NW is that it has no sharding/layering.

I haven't met a single person in the game that is not an MMO vet who has played multiple MMOs.

I'm sure the stereotype you're trying to depict exists somewhere in the game but I haven't run into any of them.

OTOH, I question your ability to judge anything about MMOs, their game play or their populations, when you have just been sitting it out for a decade and a half and you seem kind of proud of that.

I think at this point in time it's pretty safe to say that you know fuck all about MMOs and if you play this one you would just be salty and whinny about "kids these days" and "the good old days," so do us all a favor and stay away.

I don't see it as sandboxy at all. It's a simplistic theme park, where you can decide what order to ride the rides in. Sure, there is some flexibility, but you cannot do anything different than the other 2000 players on your server.

Everybody picks from the same skills, everybody gets the same quests, everybody looks the same.

It's wide, and shallow. There are a lot of options, but none of them are very deep.

For a casual player like me, who views MMO's as a virtual world to live in, it's very satisfying.

From the way posters talk there are flaws and a shallowness that was not there in the likes of the ESO or GW2 launch, but I don't see that as being an issue for them long term. They have the money and need this to be a success, the main issues I see from what people are saying is in PvP and questing, they will turn that round. If you have any doubts wait a few months that's pretty good advice for any MMO launch including for the two other MMOs I mentioned, I wish I had given ESO three months before I started that one.

Otherwise, to the question posed in the subject: Can't it be a little of Column A and a little of Column B? Personally, I'm not looking at it to replace SWG or EvE for me, and I'm not disappointed with what this game is.

Too early to tell if its a long term game for me or just a few months, but either way, I feel I've gotten value out of it.

And for the Twitch stuff, doesn't Amazon own Twitch? I'd be surprised if they did not try to leverage all their available platforms to hype the game. Given the Amazon/Twitch relationship, the push on Twitch just doesn't seem like a valid critique of the game.

Well, you are absolutely wrong on that. NW is no sandpark, it's a themebox.

I think all people should play EVE Online as a mandatory course. Also we should just hang people who come up with silly terms such as MMOLite, Sand-Park, Bromance, and fucking brunch!

My buddy gave me the best description I've heard so far (If it has been said here, I've missed it ). It's, at its core, a better-looking Albion Online.

I'm enjoying it as a chill gathering and occasionally action-orientated game whilst watching Netflix. Haven't dabbled in PvP yet, but when I care enough to try I'll join a company and hit the larger scale stuff.

And sorry, but NW has more sandbox elements than your usual WoW clone.

As you know I am not even playing, but this insistence people have to find new labels is amusing. How many sandbox elements does a themepark need before the scales are tipped and it becomes sandpark? How many themepark elements would a sandbox need to be called a themebox?
