Have we ever had a topic like this where the topic asked a question, it got a lot of responses, and the responses were entirely unanimous?

They absolutely are pro-athletes or maybe better to call them pro-e-athletes. If you are on a pro LoL team you are living in the same house with your team, your food is prepared for you, you are expected to work out in your off time and you are expected to practice as much if not more than a NFL player practices throughout the week. And the kicker, they are making serious money doing it. So ya, if that is not a professional I don't know what is.
I can agree they're professionals - they are getting paid to be gamers after all - but in no way are they athletes.

I tend to agree with the premise they are Professionals, but, I am hard pressed to call them Athletes as well, that in my mind would be like calling Professional Chess players Athletes, which is just not correct.

They are gamers....If they want to be called professional gamers, then I don't think anyone has a problem with that, but they are not athletes.

Pretty much my feels on it, Athletics, should be physical activity, which, while the nerd rage freak outs are fun to watch, they do not count as physical activity.

Being able to play computer games very, very well does have a significant physical component to it.  That's why none of the e-sports professionals are in their 40s or 50s, as is more common with the top chess players.  Repetitive strain injures are a real thing, and heavy mouse usage especially is a huge risk factor for them.

As far as being athletes, it's kind of like asking if golfers or bowlers are athletes.  Their sports are obviously much less physically demanding than basketball or football, but there is a considerable physical basis to what they do, not just a mental exercise like chess.

That is why I used the Analogy of Curling.

It takes practice, skill, and teamwork to do Curling well. But even at it's best, it is boring as all hell to watch, it's about as gripping as watching a potato boil.

Which is how MMO's feel to watch players play them. They just are not gripping to watch others play them.

Oh yeah I'm an esport fan. More specifically Dota but also CSGO and some Overwatch. These games are so well made for esport, especially Dota. The game is so deep and complex. I don't even play Dota btw lol, everything I know about the game is from watching. I mean I played a little bit.
IMO esport is here to stay, it will become bigger and bigger. And hopefully more competitive games will be designed with esport in mind. Hopefully many of them strategic and high skill ceiling. Not just pew pew. I'm not so much interested in esport based on MMOs.
