Nope, if I'm not using a service regularly I'll cancel it. That includes streaming services, Amazon Prime and MMOs.
It takes just as long to renew a subscription as it does to cancel it. I don't see the point in wasting money just to save myself a couple of minutes and a few mouse clicks.
I usually immediately cancel subs after activation that I get for free or promos when they require you to add a credit card.
That way it doesn't auto renew after the promo price or free time is up.
If the service is good enough I'll resub later, at that point I just have to remember to cancel if I'm not using it.
I don't usually sub to games, unless it is the only option available. I prefer to buy time cards and use them instead. This way I don't forget and go a few months paying for a subscription I am not using.
There is no way in hell I would pay a sub if I am not actively playing and enjoying a game.
I have come to become an advocate for Cash Shop games, as I tend to spend $20 a pay check, roughly 40 a month on a game as I am playing it.
The second I am unhappy with the game, I walk. I don't have time to play a game I am not enjoying.
When you are paying an annual subscription, make certain it isn't putting an annual recurring charge on your credit card. That's about the easiest way to end up paying for a game you're not paying. You might forget, but the credit card company doesn't.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Man, I remember buying time cards for WoW and LotRO, I had forgotten those even existed.
The WOW ones still do

I always turned annual subs off every year in EVE after they were paid so I would never make that mistake.

This is a good point, and I got tagged with that BS, way back in the day with EQ. Now I make sure I cancel my sub (if I bought one) when I quit the game.
Egotism is the anesthetic that dullens the pain of stupidity, this is why when I try to beat my head against the stupidity of other people, I only hurt myself.

$40 a month on the game you are playing? Maybe not a mini-whale, but certainly at least a large trout.
Chances are, at $40 a month, that would be the upper 30 percentile of paying players, I man not the top 10% or 1%, but.. still, up there.
Also truth be told, it's a good amount. I mean, it's 20 a paycheck, so not a bank breaker, and in the games I played, I never really wanted for anything.
The down side is, I am a little bitch about, and I admit that, I'm that shitty asshole gamer, that feels that the company should cater to what I want, if they want me to keep funding their game, as I damn well refuse to fund someone else's enjoyment, I am there for me.. screw anyone else.
As such, the second I feel a company did me wrong, I'll immediately not pay a cent more, and chances are, at that point, it just becomes a waiting game for me, to see what will finally cause me to quit.

Unpopular opinion (?): I don't like the subscription model. I even prefer the cash shop one (that I don't like very much). For me the best payment model is B2P. I like to jump in/out and back-in. I like also the feeling of ownership (and the false "I am done paying for this game"). The subscription model represent a clear net loss for me.
This is why back in the days when everybody was playing WoW, I was enjoying mainly GW1.
This is why I might play New World, when things will get a little bit better.
That said BDO and his aggressive cash shop made me spend more that I ever spent for a game, probably more that $500.

At $500 you are definitely a mini-whale, or even a giant whale calf.
I spent $250 on the lifetime sub for LoTRO when it came out. Maybe the best game money I ever spent. Otherwise, I pay the sub for a game and that's it.
But I do leave several subs going, even if I'm not currently playing the game.

That $250 sure seemed like an awful lot of dough for a game at the time.
But definitely one of the best gaming purchases I ever made, thanks to new owners honouring old purchasers.
Lotro is a game that kept its word to its lifetime sub purchasers. People use to say the game was going to shutter before you ever received your value.
I would have no problem putting another $250 into the game, but they have to do something besides making Barbie clothes.

Imho
I bought NW, played for a few weeks, and then stopped. I'll wait for 6 months to see how it sorts out.
I went back to LoTRO, and with my new 4K setup and turning off nameplates, I am pleasantly surprised how good it still looks.
I'm probably going to drop another $100 their way, just to show my appreciation.
Guilty as charged I think I keep subscriptions for SWTOR, LOTRO, FFXIV and ESO now. For 2 accounts each, as I usually play with my wife.
Thanks for reminding me to cancel at least FFXIV ...
Really? With the new expansion and all?
I have the game since the first, cancelled version. I know today's game looks really good and have a lot of content. I just don't like it. Maybe cause of it's overstylized characters, maybe something else. I'm still giving it a try from time to time and just can't keep playing.
Can we stop talking about fucking monetization legitimizing it. If all people can do is whiteknighting and talking about money, maybe this site should call itself shill.com.
I don't think you're clear on what monetization means. It's just how the game developers make money. It can be anything from a sub to having advertisements in-game, selling virtual items, or any other way the developers decide to charge for their product.
This thread isn't even about monetization. It's about a human behavior: do you stay subbed to games even if you aren't playing them.
Are you for real? Ok this isn't about monetization, its even worse! It s about needlessly giving more money to big corporation... and be proud of it?!
The smell of "A fool and his money are soon parted" going off this thread is insane.
Take care all and please screw your head back on top of your shoulder.
I mean.. not every developer with a sub is backed by a big corporation, but.... okay.
I didn't take this thread as anything more than just a question to the community. It's not like they were saying "hey make sure you never cancel your sub to a game you aren't playing so you can be a mini- whale and support the devs"
It's a question like, have you ever bought more food than you can eat, or have you ever bought something you didn't use.

What about monetization are you "against?"
Do you believe that developers/publishers should make money for their works? Or not?
Yes, honestly, without all the spending on psychological manipulation studies to make you spend ever more.
This fucking thread is stupid. I'm out of here, going to delete my account, can't stand this retarded garbage anymore. I'll just answer that other dude before and let it sink a bit before I proceed.
Or you guys can report me, so I delete my account faster. No skin of my back. I've been trying to wake people the fuck up for like 10 years now. I'm done.
Been a while since we had a good old fashioned meltdown around here... those were the days

That said, less than an hour at work pays for all my subscription services currently, so I feel content with spending 4 or 5 value meals a month for hundreds of hours of entertainment.
Yes, I hinted at that in the beginning. 5 subs is about $75, and I make more than that in one hour. So the money really means nothing.
And I keep the subs going to show support for games I like. Plus, all the bonus points add up over the months.
Hard to imagine someone would melt down and threaten to rage-quit over this thread. Weird.

I cancel those ones immediately. It’s the ones that I have a tough time letting go of
