Unreal Engine V and the coming Gaming Revival

GrymGrym Member UncommonPosts: 301
Unreal Engine V is coming very soon.  In my opinion, it will revolutionize not only gaming, but the entertainment industry at large.  This software will place the tools of an entire studio within the hands of a single developer, artist, writer, engineer, whatever.  They've figured out how to completely eliminate the polygon count requirements that limit framerate, detail, lighting, and effects that are found in any game or CGI film effect.  This means increased detail on a magnitude never seen before that will require less GPU/video card processing.  Disney already uses this beta software in development of the Mandalorian.  Check out the video link below and research a little more on your own if interested.

I am truly excited to see what the future holds when this is finally released.  I think we're about to see innovation on a scale we've never experienced before.  Cheers!

It'll be years before we see the first UE5 MMO though. It could be ArcheAge 2.

Better video or graphics is not what the MMORPG genre needs more of, innovation in game play is what is lacking, same for movies come to think of it, better stories as well.

But that's just me I guess.

While I completely agree with you, tools such as this enable "good" developers to makes games without massive infrastructure.

So the good games will come, just don't expect them from the big studios as per usual.

I'm with Kyleran here, good graphics mean nothing if the underlying gameplay isn't there.

Unreal seems to have been hyper-focused on graphics for a while now. I can definitely admit that some great looking stuff gets built in Unreal, and improving the tools and opening up more options for the devs is always a good thing.

However, a long term criticism of Unreal has been that is is hard to use / program / modify in comparison to Unity. Supposedly, you can create better, faster, more complex gameplay in Unity much easier than in Unreal.

I don't have any first hand experience of this, but i did spend a while researching the two before deciding to learn Unity for myself. All the reviews kept coming back that Unity was better for developers, Unreal for artists.

And of course, both Unreal and Unity are terrible for building MMOs, neither can handle that amount of players at once. Given how niche the genre is, I can't see either engine being updated to make them suitable for MMOs.

dont quote me but the devs of valheim (which is unity based) seem to prefer unreal engine.

no issue having more tools available to smaller developers where all the cool stuff happens.

big studios seem out of touch with players so it dont matter what tools they have.

It won't revolutionize anything. Just another incremental upgrade that gives option to create a bit better games (especially graphics) and a bit faster, but nothing larger than that.

Imho the only thing that has chance to revolutionize game creation is if AI based tools (researched by companies like Google and NVidia) ever become good enough that creation of either assets or maps could be largely left to them.

But unless something like that happens, the game engines are just doing incremental upgrades, nothing more.

For info, there's a demo available, and the content you're seeing in that video can be downloaded into the engine and viewed on PC.

    It is really VERY impressive.

I applaud anything that improves graphics or performance, but I do note that if a larger fraction of the time spent on graphics was spent on gameplay we would have better games.

That's actually one of the major points of that new version. You need to spend less time on graphics.

Will have to wait and see if reality matches the claims once new MMORPGS start releasing with it, oh say sometime in 2033?

Hope I'm still alive for it.

It's not just Unreal using that new "micro details" technology.

And this game here comes next year:

Without progression, you aren't really playing a game, sort of like the difference between hitting some balls at the driving range vs playing in the British Open.

SC promises the latter, but is still stuck in the former.

Once anything launches, come back and we'll talk.  Now go back and finish your testing please or it might never come out.

You don't need "progression" to be playing a game lol

Just because you have trouble finding playing games fun anymore doesn't mean you have act like a jaded old fart anytime someone showcases joy of being able to do so.

Once you do, come back and we'll talk. Now go back and finish your tea and reaccess your grudges. B)

Didn't ArtCraft develop an MMO framework based on Unity while they were working on Crowfall?

Is that really the case? Because if the (semi-)automatically generated worlds of UE5 have such a high quality, then the models created by the artists must also be of equally high quality, otherwise the coherence of the world would be lost. And high-quality models need a correspondingly large amount of labour.

    Na it’s not just you.

One thing that always brings me a chuckle is when they remake a classic and change the damn story. Like they think they are a better writer than the person who made it a classic in the first place.

Any news regarding more robust tools is welcome news.

Tools in the software realm have allowed me to do things that we’re impossible to do on my own before.

The downside is that we don’t do as much math inside our heads. But creativity can flourish.

They did indeed, and they had a terrible time of it and kept having to scale back the size of the game because Unity couldn't handle the sorts of numbers they wanted to have.

Even with the scaled back numbers, there were still a lot of problems with lag at launch which meant the main focus of the game - the throne war - didn't really work well.

I don't know how things stand now, they might have been able to optimise things a bit better. But its a common problem with every studio that tries to use an off-the-shelf engine: not a single one is designed for mmos.

Yeah, that's what happens when one insists on playing "finished" games, such an unreasonable and out of date concept, right?
