Maybe MS doesn't like Amazon's New World, and decided to jump deeper into mmorpg's and offer competition.
Important: mmorpg's are a video game sub division starving for attention. BUT ONLY THE RICH CAN PLAY !
Well, same can be said for most anything, blockbuster movies, high quality television, even anime theses days as I'm sure Arcane cost a pretty penny.
Single player games can be very high budget as well, just what happens in mature industries, not a lot of room for new guys unless they can be disruptors of some sort.

All I know is if I were Microsoft, I would buy Blizzard and expand on World of Warcraft but a newer version.
Difference between Amazon's New World and what Blizzards been doing for the past ten years. Is to DEEPLY ANALIZE WHAT VANILLA DID RIGHT.
Why ?..... Because that's truly the only successful version. All other expansion's rested on the lorals of vanilla......
It can easily be done again.
EDIT: Come to think of it, I would save the 70 Billion and do it on my own
the problem with this thinking is the audience is always changing. What worked 20 years ago might not work today. I think the only reason why weve never seen wow 2 is because even they know it was a fluke or don't fully understand why it was so successful.
for instance i only lasted a few months in wow back on 2005. I thought it was junk. In comparison i have thousands of hours in eso which, idea wise, is a far superior game though it has its own problems.

[Phil
Spencer] Had good calls this week with leaders at Sony. I confirmed our
intent to honor all existing agreements upon acquisition of Activision
Blizzard and our desire to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation. Sony is an
important part of our industry, and we value our relationship.
Well,
there you go. Spencer is playing it cool. Microsoft will honor all
existing agreements and Call of Duty will stay on PlayStation.
I can’t see how it can be in Microsoft’s interest to block games from Sony, it would limit sales and hurt revenues.
At this point in the console game, it makes no sense. The only reason Sony got into the software and movie industries was to support their hardware.

I'll give you that, it was a "fluke". A very very successful fluke, that's why that version needs to be analyzed.
As far as the rest of what you say.... Nonsense ! You admitted you haven't liked WoW when it was a true mmorpg, and now you like ESO where it's not an mmorpg, but a solo game online, where for the most part you play along side others soloing.
I hate to say it, but your opinion does not count, were talking about mmorpgs here.

i guess you never played that game. lol. No game caters to all playstyles equally like eso does.
Do you think they will finally build World of Warcraft 2, or still see it as a monthly multi million dollar income and leave it alone ?...... After all they have to see expansions are loosening their mojo.
After all, for 70 billion they would have to have plans for their current projects and some of that has to be WoW. Anything completely new, they wouldn't need Blizzard.
Important: You would think to buy such a venture, they would have to have aggressive plans.
However, I first hand watched Cinram mfg. buyoff Time/Warner music division and NOT CHANGE A THING. But simply to knock off competition and collect income.
Realize that Blizzard is the smallest of the three revenue / profit generation streams (less than 25%) Microsoft may be more interested in the other properties under the Activision or King labels.
So they could very well let Blizzard coast while they focus on the other 75%.
Yeah, I've heard people speculate that "Game Pass" is what Microsoft keeps its eyes on most. It is kind of interesting to see Sony fans worrying about "exclusives" when Sony has a few of their own. I do feel for them in games that were "all platforms" now may become exclusive. I think that Microsoft cares very little about console sales.
I will be interesting to watch how this all pans out
Microsoft closed Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield to PS. Also smaller games before like Wasteland Remaster. It might do the same for Call of Duty or even Diablo 4 as well.
I think when they produce a console, they care about selling it.
They definitely have a business plan, what that plan is?
From a consumer$ point of view...
Microsoft's Gamepass is definitely for me.
It's important to be the one that everybody follows.
I admit that I have yet to get into Game Pass. I've looked at it a couple of times and the two games that would have me paying for it will never be included: Madden NFL 10 or NCAA Football 13. NCAA Football is defunct (though there are rumors of it coming back) and only the latest Madden is there.
Playing Madden NFL 10 on my PC would be my dream

1. WoW has been analyzed and it wasn't hard since the Dev's at the time said literally, We looked at all the other games that were out, took what everyone liked, wrapped it in an easily accessible package, and shipped it. How much more research do you need?
2. Much like WoW ESO (and despite your ignorant statements it IS very much an MMO) appeals to a certain crowd saying "your opinion doesn't matter..." just shows how in the dark you really are on this topic.
3. WoW was a fluke, in order to reproduce that you would need a game on a scale that only Star Citizen is attempting at this point (not here to debate that game, just a point making statement) and even then it probably would not see the success WoW did back in the early 2000's. In my opinion simply because there isn't the oh wow (no pun) online games with my friend's factor in play anymore. Back then all of this was pretty new, nowadays hell my 76-year-old mom plays online games. The world is just desensitized. WoW is a big part of why games became as mainstream as they are now. Allowing easy access and simple gameplay made it so anyone could jump in and have fun in short order.
So yeah, unless it's a game that just sends a shock wave through the entire industry, we will not be seeing vanilla WoW type success. Imo.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

I don't disagree with you - maybe it's different on console hardware.
When I last tried XBGP for the PC - it required you to go through the Microsoft Store for installs. It made a royal mess of my hard drive, flagged some directories to where I couldn't access them (even though it's my PC), moving a game install was near impossible, and many games flat out just wouldn't work for whatever reason.
It left a sour taste in my mouth.
I totally agree with XBGP, in theory. I think Microsoft totally dorked the implementation up though. I hear they are trying to fix it, or maybe they have, I haven't tried it recently. But after using Steam; anything with less flexibility is hard to swallow.
I hate the Microsoft store UI. I don't understand how a company like Microsoft can have such a lousy UI
Maybe that's why their phones failed?
Weirdly, I maintain that the Microsoft smartphones had the best UI on the market. so easy to use, so clean.....
I stuck with MS phones for as long as I could!
I will agree with MS's web presence though. Have you ever tried to get through to their customer service people? It's damn near impossible these days! No phone numbers to call, no email addresses to send to, no live chat. Just a badly organised wiki.....which never seems to have answers......and a badly organised community forum.
the only people you seem to be able to contact is, surprise surprise, the sales team.
Unfortunately, this is the way all across big tech. Ever try to contact Google? I have yet to succeed in trying to delete some old GMail accounts...

WoW is a conundrum...It has been a cash cow for Blizzard for 17 years but has slowed down considerably.......The thing is that WoW had perfect timing coming into the MMO scene and they nailed it....I give them credit for understanding the market and reading the customers to perfection, but in 2021 its a different ballgame....
Sure they would sell a couple of million right off the bat....look at New World.....Most of what we see now has been done...There isnt alot of innovation....THey msot likely won't create a new market like they did with WoW.....WHo's even left that helped create WoW?...... I dont even remember the last Microsoft game I bought......
Skyrim is still being sold on PlayStation store despite claims in that very reddit thread that Bethesda games were removed from the store. Some titles will be available and some won't just like I can't play Spiderman or Uncharted on Xbox GamePass. Much of the Xbox PC catalog is also available on Steam and Sony or their close partners have started releasing some previously exclusive titles there as well.. PlayStation owners should be used to exclusives so I'm not sure why there is so much hand wringing over this.
I haven't really any rumours but Bethesda has been pretty clear that ES6 and Starfield won't ever come to PlayStation
This is really up to Sony as to whether they will allow interop with their competitors. What was said is that Elder Scrolls 6 is going to be integrated with the Xbox Gaming account which is what GamePass and a lot of their in house titles require. So, if a platform allows Xbox account integration, like Steam does, then it will come to that platform and if it doesn't then it won't. If Sony decides to allow Xbox Account integration on their platform, like do with Ubisoft Connect, then things could change. Spencer said this is not specifically about Sony, but the fact that they won't allow that on their platform. The ball for cross platform interop is in Sony's court.
Cross platform play is for the games that are already available. There are a lot of games which do have cross platform between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
Exclusives are a very different deal. Some times exclusives are timed, but they have been pretty clear about ES6 and Starfield, they will never be on PlayStation as they put it they are important titles and there a reason they bought the company. This isn't in Sony's court, just like Xbox not getting Spider-Man isn't in Microsoft's court.
I didn't understand what you meant by account integration. I mean my Ubisoft and PS accounts are linked but I'm not getting my PC games from Ubisoft on PS, I'd have to buy them again. So that won't affect exclusives in any way.
Edit: sorry I think you meant the integration of subscription accounts, like using Netflix on PlayStation, for Game Pass as well. I'm not sure even that is on the table, or ever was, or ever will lol. I think what PS users can hope for is an equivalent version at best, which is the Project Spartacus.

You guys realize that this has very little to do with gaming right? This acquisition is a response to all of the action that we are seeing around the so called Metaverse. Facebook changing their name and trying to trademark Meta was an eye opener for big companies like Microsoft that don't want to be perceived as being left behind in what will be the next tech battle ground.
Nearly every retailer/brand is quickly adjusting by filing trademarks related to the Metaverse, NFTs and crypto as none of the retailers want to be left behind like they were when ecommerce hit. The reality is that very few of them will have the technical knowledge and spend to keep up.. companies like Amazon and Walmart will dive in head first with their seemingly unlimited money but other smaller retailers will need help.. they will go to companies like Microsoft to get into the Metaverse. This is what Microsoft is positioning and getting ready for.
A company like Microsoft dominated the OS battles, they lost the internet battles though as Google kicked their ass, the Metaverse is a new battleground that they fully intend to go after.
They didn't acquire Activision/Blizzard for their IP or old games.. they acquired them for their talent. I'm sure Microsoft will keep making games, but don't expect any huge gaming revelations out of this.
If you think about it, a new age of technology is upon us and if momentum continues to build around the Metaverse it may not be much longer before we consider the internet old technology that old people use, kids will say.. you mean people had to type out a URL every time you wanted to go somewhere!? Get ready to feel old.

Funny how random the hills are that people are willing to die on. When Playstation was hitting the competition with exclusive after exclusive Microsoft was mocked because they didn’t have enough of them. When Playstation was yelling about crossplatform gaming and it seemed like Microsoft wasn’t on board everybody was pointing at the latter.
Now Microsoft is catching up, in a quite ahead of the pack package I might ad, and voila, people are pointing at Microsoft again. For the exact same thing they have been loving and cheering on before, crazy stuff really. PC race especially should be happy, they get the best of all worlds by now, also getting access to part of the PS library. Unless you want to talk about Nintendo. But please, lets not talk about Nintendo

I've learned most people would just want to play games and don't even care about this stuff. Recently there was a campaign to petition the 'Endgame' version of 'Godfall' as a monthly PS free game. Lots of noise on Reddit and a few other websites. Then if you checked the group-finding communities or trophy hunting communities, nobody cared, no one even mentioned anything negative, everyone was just enjoying a new free game and posting their Platinum trophies.
The thing is no matter what you do, some people are unhappy. But that aside, there is a reason many people don't like Microsoft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Microsoft#Ties_to_US_Government_departments). And due to that history of Microsoft, people tend to be not trusting when Microsoft acquires a new company, while on the other hand most would cheer for Sony's expansions.
We had the whole Microsoft vs Apple, Microsoft vs Google, Microsoft vs Sony, when they got into making phones it was Microsoft vs Nokia, then Microsoft purchased Nokia phone so everyone hated Nokia and the story continues.
So this dance is part of the competition. Like Soccer clubs. You can't have competition without hooliganism, you can't have fair-play without foul-play, you can't have nice things without horrible things.
I, personally, am not a fan of big acquisitions. As a Sony fan, it would have been not happy if Sony had made this purchase.
I think Sony is doing much better (for gaming) by creating a support network of studios, some working on remasters, some on new games, some on sequels, some on PC ports. Although there has been some bad experiences regarding pushing and punishing studios, but I believe those are just silly. I mean if you are a studio and you are behind your own schedule, then go ahead and blame Sony for the unfinished release of a game, is really your fault. And when Sony decides that they can't rely on the 'project management' part of a studio, then some people cry about losing independence. You can't have it both sides. Because studios that have been doing good, releasing good polished products right on time, they never had any problems with Sony. And when they wanted to make delays due to good reasons (God of War Ragnarok), Sony has supported them, and they even convinced Sony for a PC port.

It's a no brainer imho

Unfortunately, this is the way all across big tech. Ever try to contact Google? I have yet to succeed in trying to delete some old GMail accounts...

'But there are many. You can play them entirely solo, and even offline. Also, you are wrong by default.'
Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'
