I could do this better. I tryed em all and there is no best to play. Lost ark will ofc be one of the best to play 2022
We all wait for ashes of creation but that willlikely be a 2025 game or 2030 who knows maybe it will end up lik ethis space game that just sell ships as NFTS and never releases....i forgot the name of it hahaha

Clinging to life support? FFXIV had to shut down new sales and trials because too many people were trying to join in.
I think the game you forgot the name of is Star Citizen, but I didn't know they sold NFTs. Ships that cost thousands of dollars and ships that are still in the concept phase, yes, but NFTs? No.

Years out from Launch, so plenty off time for them to decide they need to push the finish line back again when they "need to add a block chain so we can give your space ships the NFT value they deserve!".

Oh yeah, there's still plenty of time for them to add NFTs into the game. I mean, just imagine the millions they could make not only on new sales but on a conversion system that allowed you to upgrade your existing ship purchases into NFTs, for a nominal 3-5% upcharge of course.
Speaking of NFTs, maybe I missed it, but I still haven't seen a PvP centric game take on NFTs. Who needs play to earn when you could have slay to earn. Other games would benefit from it as gankers and bots alike would suddenly vanish as they moved on in search of NFT gains.

I think you are underestimating the desire of gaming studios to make money every which way. That's all I have seen since cash shops were introduced, I think it was when F2P cash shop games offered a subscription that I started talking about cash making ideas going at light speed from one studio to the next.
There must be a way to slay and earn, they may not have come up with it yet, but they will.

Nah, I don't underestimate their desire to make money. If my post sounded like sarcasm it wasn't. As far as slay to earn, it would be super simple. Just take any current pvp game that has full loot and assign a value to each nugget, log, flower, everything and watch the outlaws swarm gatherers before they get to a safe zone. Some players already do it just for fun.

I see your thinking, it ties into "why do we play games". But it seems to me that gaming studios have done wonderfully well at stretching the idea, so "you can also play games because of x, y and z." They have stretched the definition to include "looking good in new outfits or spaceships", "home improvements", "loot box gambling" and now "owning" NFT's, this is another hurdle they will get us to jump.
Anyway keep up the good work, maybe next time you could do a "cash shop appraisal" for each game, giving us an idea of where the cash shop is when it comes to P2W and these days P2E?
I feel Play to Earn is far more insidious than Pay for Convenience or Pay to Win for the simple reason that my most priced commodity is my time. If you offer me the latter two I can ignore it and play but sinking my time to earn in the game will be far less rewarding and a deep hole I have no wish to be mired in.
It's like an addiction this earn thing. The more you earn the more you want to play to earn and in the end unlike the other two which you can dismiss at the outset this one will slowly eat away like acid.
wow, so many haters, shitters, and whatever else just bandwagoning negativity
there are so many great MMOs out there, SWTOR has better story quests than most 60$ singleplayer games, and the gameplay in some mmos are better than AAA singleplayer games
there's so many great mmos to choose from, i don't have enough time to play them all. ESO is still king for me, and lost ark will be a contender, ESO does a live stream tomorrow with all new year of content , and for you all to sit there hating on "old mmos" wow is like almost 20 years old too, so what? still a great game for people who enjoy it
i think you all have a terrible toxic mindset towards content and games, if it isn't coming out soon, you think it doesn't exist. man you could go play ESO and have content as f2p for the next 3 years casually playing without paying a cent
Beg to differ about the "story better than most singleplayer games." Unless maybe you're including every single pile of garbage featured on Steam and listed as "singleplayer."
It's not even really fair to compare MMORPG story to singleplayer games.

I always get curious about comments like this.
I played SWTOR at launch for a year, and 99% of the story was just the usual garbage. The class stories were better, but still not really that good.
Did the story get a lot better in the expansions?
Or was it simply the voice acting that made players think the stories were good, and not the actual substance of the stories?

Don't get me wrong- SWTOR has some of the best story content in the entire genre, if not the best overall.
It's just that pre-packaged stories are severely limited by the nature of the MMORPG. In a singleplayer game, i.e. Hellblade or The Forgotten City, your character can manipulate their environment and interact with NPCs in ways that aren't feasible in an MMORPG. Stories can affect the world in ways that won't work if hundreds of other players need a chance to do the same thing in the same game world.
Based on the list it seems there really aren't any truly awesome or groundbreaking existing games left to try in the fantasy MMORPG segment. Nothing amazing or revolutionary on the horizon either, except maybe partially Ashes of Creation. Does that game have a serious development budget to carry out the project in envisioned form, though? I hope it doesn't suffer a similar fate that Crowfall or Chronicles of Elyria suffered.
I guess the only glimmer of hope might be Star Citizen for now.
Fortunately, there are at least some single player and multiplayer sequels like Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo 4, Path of Exile 2 in the pipeline. Also, anticipation of games such as Avowed, Starfield, Callisto Protocol, Crimson Desert or Elder Scrolls 6, which could motivate to buy a new PC when they are released and DDR5-memory and Geforce 4000-series arrive and become available in stores. No need to throw the keyboard and the mouse on the fence entirely just yet, but the gaming hobby might rely more on classic single player games rather than fantasy MMORPGs in the foreseeable future.
Someone asked if there are raids in Neverwinter. Since spring 2021 and to the present day, the most relevant raid in Neverwinter is a hardcore dungeon called Vault of Stars. The dungeon ends immediately if someone dies even once in it. People run it because they try to collect four reagents to craft a very powerful ring. New hardcore players should think twice before starting Neverwinter, though. There is a lot of "elite" gear to obtain before having even a slight chance of crafting the powerful ring. Without the ring, a dps character won't be considered high end dps by other players. A new player will either have to spend a year or two or hundreds of dollars to get to the level needed to run the dungeon. The game is kind of mediocre, but to be honest, so are all of the other fantasy MMORPG options.

I suppose I liked the story because your choices actually effect things. Other MMOs don't so people, me included, rarely read them. I just run the quest to get the exp and loot.

OK, that makes sense.
It's not something I ever really noticed, the lightside / darkside mechanic and my min-maxing desire meant I never really experimented with the choices (and the choices seemed shallow) as I always went full light or full dark, depending on which character i was playing.

Bioware games never feel like real choice to me. I'm playing Mass Effect trilogy and am reminded of this. Answering honestly gets me renegade points even though I'm not renegade minded. So, now I have to give canned answers in order to earn paragon points even though I don't feel they truly reflect what a paragon would be. They certainly don't reflect how I think a soldier or marine would answer those dialogs. It's just strange and feels artificial to me.
That's always been my problem with them. And if you want an evil character then "You're really evil!"
I get that there are only so many choices they can give you but I wonder if they can at least give the player a "flavor toggle" for how the dialogue choice sounds.

I usually meta-game those just so I can have more dialogue options (the blue paragon and red renegade ones) since it's pretty easy to get both paragon and renegade high and there are no penalties for doing so.
IDK how far you are in the trilogy but one of the ME3 DLCs included in the legendary edition that was new to me when I played it, the one that starts with you getting the key to Anderson's apartment, does a pretty good job of poking fun at itself and especially Shepard's dialogue even during the battle portions of that DLC,
It's one of my favorite parts of ME3.

My problem with being "evil" in such games usually comes with negative consequences which is expected but not many positives, at least not enough to justify not playing the more optimal path.
In real life there are murderous drug lords cruising around in a fleet of Lambos, while working schmoos like me drive an 8 year old Frontier.
If video games let evil characters exorbitantly profit from doing such activities even at the cost of extreme negative consequences (i.e. even permadeath, all progress lost) it would be a whole lot more entertaining.

Your statement about pre-packaged stories is precisely why I think the only real evolution for 'quests' is dynamic generated content. That includes actors (NPCs), opponents (NPCs), dialog, prompts, rewards, and goals/objectives. It would be a bonus if the generated quest tied into higher level 'plots'.
I just don't think computer AI is advanced enough to accomplish this, much less in games. Computerized dialog and writing in general are notoriously difficult. Certainly, no game is actively pursuing anything like this, so there's not much in the way of a precedence for future games, nor are the players expecting anything like what I imagine.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

The way I often imagine something like this happening is within a sandbox setting built around a "life sim" environment.
By that, I mean that the whole game is built on top of an ongoing simulation for all enemies, npcs, factions etc. Every NPC would have it's own goals and life, it's own memories, preferences etc.
the player would then interact with that simulation, and quests would only be available if one of the NPCs in the simulation had a need and was willing to outsource that need.
For example:
* Hunters kill too many foxes in local area
* Rat population increases due to lack of predators
* Local grain farmers recognise the problem
* Local farmers fail to solve it by themselves, so are willing to outsource: New Quest!
We have the technology to do this right now. I mean hell, this is almost exactly how Elite: Dangerous is built! Elite's background simulation is incredibly complex and is what produces a lot of the quests, its just the way that players can actually interact with that BGS is very limited.
Such detailed simulations probably wouldn't work well for single player games as they can become very cpu-intensive, but if you're running an online game, you can have one huge server farm to run that simulation and then players can just connect and interact with it.
