BLACK HISTORY/FUTURE MONTH IN GAMING

Let's talk about something positive!  I want to highlight the contributions of this amazing fellow. Just Sharing! 



Jerry Lawson! 

The gaming industry is booming with consumers spending $44 billion on gaming software and services. Within the US, over 428,000 jobs are in the industry; however, only 2% of those job holders are Black. Those dismal numbers are disheartening when you consider the contributions that Black people have made within the gaming industry’s history as well as the present.  

This lucrative world wouldn’t be what it is today without the work of Black innovators within the industry. Whether it is in manufacturing or overall design, some of your favorite video games wouldn’t exist without the efforts of talented Black gaming professionals. 

Gerald “Jerry” Lawson was one of the few Black engineers in the gaming industry during the 1970s. And though one of few, his impact resonates tremendously throughout the gaming world. You don’t get called the “father of the video game cartridge” for nothing. Lawson and his team led the development of the Fairchild Channel F, a.k.a. the precursor to modern-day video game cartridges. This game-changing idea was adopted by Atari and Nintendo before Lawson left to make more history as the owner of Video Soft, the first Black gaming development company. Pair that with a spot in the World Video Game Hall of Fame and you have a legacy that lasts forever.

    Christopher Judge, not an engineer but an actor. He really took Kratos in God of War to the next level. I'm very glad that Sony Santa Monica did right by him and delayed God of War: Ragnarök for him so he could recover. 

    Also gaming industry global revenue is $180.1 billion, is your number for US alone?

    oh yeah, my bad It's us numbers only. STRONG AGREE with Chris Judge he is awesome. He was also a character in Stargate SG-1 a very underrated show imo

    A thread like this wouldn't be complete without a shout out to Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop games. He was also very involved with CDPR in the creation of CP 2077, not to mention that all of its lore is based on his work.

    Because klash was interested and motivated enough to put the research and the effort to write it up. And it was a really good and interesting write-up. No one is stopping you from doing the same. Sounds fair and equal to me. 
    Because bringing up a potential hot topic out of no place is not good.

    when every thing is "already equal " this topic is assuming its not !
    By talking about one side.... Their should not be one side or another.

    Pondsmith has done video game work but I am leaving that to one side.

    The whole feel and background of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk tabletop RPG was seminal and quite true to the work of the authors who established the genre though far closer to William Gibson's books than the genre as a whole. Indeed Gibson's version and from that Pondsmith's RPG treatment is in the main what the general public think of today as cyberpunk.

    Of course there are other good RPG treatments of cyberpunk, but none were as true to Gibson vision. For example when Gibson heard about Shadowrun (released a year later) he said, "Spare me Elves".

    Apart from that he helped write one of my favourite DnD settings Kara-Tur The Eastern Realms. Though not a DnD mechanics fan I have used a number of their great settings like this one myself.

    He wrote Teenagers From Outer Space, a lark of an RPG which is (as far as I know) still dying for an anime series to be based on it.

    And who can forget Castle Falkenstein, another seminal work which melded a clever game system with brilliant ideas and historical/pseudo historical background.

    He has won multiple "Gamer's Choice Awards" and was inducted into Origins Hall of Fame.

    God I fell in love with him because of the Stargate series.

    I don't want to get into the depths of this. But in my opinion, all things are equal. 
    But you have to boil it all down to the very basics to see that. (This is where it gets very deep, too much so for me to want to carry on that conversation. 

    HOWEVER, along the way to boiling it down, a person is likely to "flip-flop" a number of times. 
    In the end, though, it is all equal, revealing the mistakes and the abuses, the dirty tricks and the dark side of humanity, involved in such depth of study. 

    I'm not trying to say anything here, as I think it will all work out in the end. We, humanity, have been on this journey for a very long time. We're just not "there" yet. 
    But we're getting close. I hope that, as the tides ebb and flow, that we don't have any more ebbs. 

    I sense a plan, built into the very nature of the Grand Design, and yet somehow, somehow...the timing of things is sometimes curious.

    Yeah I kept it brief and focused on current events. Thanks for fleshing it out though.

    He's definitely one of my heroes especially since he is also an old fart from my generation :)

    Good insights about Gibson and his visions also. He's another of my heroes and a local (to me) Vancouver writer.

    I don't know how many here saw the first season of Altered Carbon and if they did, how many noticed the Gibson homage by changing the setting from the book to San Francisco and having squatters living on the bridge just like in the Gibson Bridge trilogy. I noticed it and got a kick out of that.

    Thanks for the OP. I did find it positive, learned something from it, and would look forward to further posts of this nature. 

    As for the "what about [my] month" comments: I think you're asking in the wrong place. Black History Month is something recognized by the US gov't (maybe others, but just speaking for my nationality). You can learn more at https://blackhistorymonth.gov/about/. If you want a month to celebrate some other group, then take it up with the gov't/vote accordingly.

    Let me see if I can do this right. 

    • Race exists. 
    • Black people is a racialized classification of people. 
    • Black History Month is about the observance of the history of the said race, in countries that were involved in slavery of Black people on rather a large-scale; US, Canada, UK, and you better believe it, Ireland. We observe it in October, you guys across the pond do it in February. 
    • Part of this observance of history can be about the achievements of the said race in the countries that not so long ago they were slaves, and there were discriminatory laws against them in the previous century. 
    • This is a gaming forum. 
    • People are posting about Black people achievements in the gaming industry in lines of that observance. 
    • No one is hurt.
