I don't know the purpose of starting the game at 10th level, I'm hoping there actually was purpose behind that decision.
Levels 1-10 were there in the open betas/trials and as far as I know they are there in other regions.
It was just a confusing and not particularly fun prologue/tutorial that didn't really add anything. I thought cutting that portion out was a good move since the new player experience is much better now and gets you into the meat of the story much better.
That prologue is such an Arkblock.

I just wonder why they didn't simply make it optional, since the content existed... seems a waste to me.

I am playing the Bard now and I am enjoying it. I don't think I can do any of the group stuff in this game but soloing with this bard might be fun. I am not sure if I can clear the content the one you can solo and if I cannot I will change to the Gunlancer or the Scrapper. I really like the Scrapper too.
I keep changing my main character and I am not sure what the impact of changing it has. I know that certain quest rewards are only available once per main. This system is a bit confusing. I guess it is supposed to echo the one character play any class thing FFXIV has but in this case it is embodied in several avatars.
I don't want to do the group content because I am doing horribly badly avoiding all the red stuff. I get caught in the animations and cannot move. I am also often hitting in one direction with the melee classes because my mouse pointer is in the opposite area where no mobs are. Quite embarrassing really. I am sure group members will be thrilled with my obvious skill.

You can solo anything and everything just fine with the Bard. Its DPS is only mediocre when compared to the OP classes like the Sorc, but it's plenty good enough for the basic story content.
In some ways I actually prefer soloing with the Bard over my Sorc because her cast time abilities are faster. I get in more trouble with the Sorc because I hate canceling out of a cast just because I'm going to possibly get hit... so I just stand there and get hit and then chug potions and kite to recover
With the Bard I find I can finish the cast and have enough microseconds left over to get out of the telegraphed area.

While still working hard on my first character, the Gunlancer (level 340) I just know I'm going to be playing several alts, already on the list is Artillerist, Bard, Sorc....

I hate the abbreviated start - I got a weapon upgrade to equip before I even fought a single enemy? And you have to chose your advanced class out the gate - why even bother, why not just let you chose it at character selection?
The combat feels clunky - I can't count how many times I end up attacking in the wrong direction for some reason, or dodge straight into an enemy attack because the controls just get wonky. Or my shield doesn't fire when I push the button.
Early on getting a group in a dungeon wasn't too bad. Once I started getting to some of the later continents that all dried up and I've had to solo all the story content to continue advancing. I haven't been able to get a matchmaking group since about L35.
The repetitive voice overs get really annoying. At first, they do help add some ambiance - random NPCs will just say things as you walk about. But they say the same damn thing every time, and every time you walk past them.
Most of the quests are basic MMO fodder - fetch. kill xx. deliver. Often times it's less than 1`0 steps away, which makes it feel doubly pointless.
Almost every map (and the quest lines that go with them) are linear. I remember the description of one area said "Open Plains" and I thought "Finally!"... and it was yet another corridor-laden nearly-on-rails map.
But...
The story so far has has some high points, and there is plenty of it, and even without matchmaking I haven't got stuck and forced to grind (although I know that's coming, I haven't opened up anything post 250GS). The dungeons are short but fairly well put together. The map does open somewhat once you hit the high seas. The areas are vibrant and diverse. There are plenty of various mechanics and systems that keep me involved. And every time I think I'm about to finally hit some plateau, some other mechanic gets exposed and the world gets that much bigger yet again.
I just hit 50 on my first. I can't seem to put it down, even though it's got some very obvious flaws.

Sorceress is out of the question for me so very glass cannony I tried in the advanced classes trying bit and I was so bad getting hit by the boss all the time. So I knew there was no way I can play it.
Bard , Scrapper and Gunlancer are the only classes I can play so far.

The combat definitely has some issues. The biggest one I've encountered (twice) is one of the preset combat skill coming unhinged. It's happened once with the "A" key and once with the "Q". Naturally, those are the two skills I have highest, and each time was in a boss fight. A few more feathers off to the 'Resurrect Now' function.
I've gotten to my stronghold now. One of the purple quests asks me to do one of two emotes to the king. Problem was, I hadn't gotten to the quests to do those yet.
I do like Luterra Castle. It's big, with lots of people to exchange items I've not gotten yet for stuff I have no idea what it's for. I probably should open some of the login quest chests I've accumulated in the bank. And probably time to figure out something about combat potions -- there seem to be tons of them.
The voices and pointless quests are beginning to get on my nerves in a major way.

Accidentally swapped the E and R skills today. It seems to be related to the drag-and-drop functions. Combat can get messy. When you lose your skills, you're pretty much stuck with running away!

How does that happen , when you are using Hotkeys ?
I tend to get stuck in tradeskill mode when I get attacked, running around chucking hunting spears and fishing hooks at mobs...
It does well switching to tradeskill mode when I go to chop down a tree, but not so good at switching out when I turn around to attack.
That, and the ultimate where you jump and shield the group... I hit that key accidentally all the time (playing on controller) and can't cancel - I can see the targeting reticle and sigh that I just screwed up again but can't cancel it out - so there goes that shield meter ><

as far as tradeskill you should be able to get out by making a normal attack(for me it's right mouse click). or for keyboard we just hit b to swap to and from.

Thanks. I'll try standard attack and see how it goes. Controller uses a lot of chording (Trigger + button) for most attacks, but standard attack is a single button. Switching between combat and tradeskill loadouts on a controller is the SELECT button, which is somewhat awkward to hit while you are getting beat on.
I tried the controller it was too much for me. I usually have difficulty with navigation when I use the controller but the sheer combination of buttons to press together made me ill. I went back to my 19 button mouse where I can map everything to a single key and I simply automove to cursor and bound that to "w" so I could turn it on and off.
If I played with a controller what @Ridelynn explained would be happening all the time.

I just set the key for combat/gathering to mouse button 4 ( side button) and never looked back very easy to switch back and forth on the fly .

Leveling from 1 to 50 is god-awful. A really huge turn off.
Meh, it's pretty quick to hit 50, not as bad as some make it (YMMV) and not a concern afterwards for ones alts.
Yeah once you hit a certain part of the story you get two battle passes to boost characters to level 50 and ilvl 302. You just have to redo some major story moments. I believe you get a 500 gold boost of some kind but I haven't tried that yet.
I did manually level an alt and yeah it gets tedious but you can skip a LOT of quests if you are bored. You only have to do main story quests, but you should do red ones that pop up.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
If I played with a controller what @Ridelynn explained would be happening all the time.

I did manually level an alt and yeah it gets tedious but you can skip a LOT of quests if you are bored. You only have to do main story quests, but you should do red ones that pop up.
