From my viewpoint: only so many times you can bemoan the lack of innovation in a genre so stagnant.
Even the features on these sites have expanded beyond MMORPG games, because the industry just isn't giving us much to talk about.
I personally don't think the industry standard is stagnant. I see all kinds of games out there. Old ones, current ones, and upcoming ones. Big budget, mid budget, low budget, and kickstarter budget. I think that a lot of people have ideas on what they want and if they don't see it, they disregard the rest as irrelevant.
As far as MMORPG adding non MMO content. It's been years I think since they've been doing it and I think it has to do more with coin than with stagnation. More genres you have the more potential you have of pulling in more of those ad dollars.
Who knows, maybe I need to get my glass half empty glasses on. I'm excited to see what's coming up. everything from VR to AR to a few MMOs that are announced, keep me interested. Another WoW expansion does not.
The players aren't dead.. at least not yet. The games are though. In a MMORPG I should never be able to reach Max level in a week.. never. WTf is the point of making the game if people can just fly through the entire game?

Most people don't just fly through the game though.
People see a speed runner and somehow thinks that's applicable to everyone which just isn't the case.
Sorry to say most people don't realize how average they really are.

The game industry is still massively growing in terms of reach of new audiences. I'm not worried at all about the customer base, we just need developers to launch a good variety of games to deliver on the various preferences within the MMORPG segment.
I think one big reason for less forum activity, not yet discussed, is when the Free To Play model started to pick up steam in the 2010s. Why?
Well, prior to that... these forums were overflowing with activity because people were basically contemplating $200+ investment in a single title (that's just the box $ + monthly sub for a year... people also came here to figure out if they had to spend $$$ to upgrade their PC).
So, people wanted to:
A) Learn as much and ask questions about titles before buying or whether to remain sub (game direction/content)
B ) Play a bit of the hater/fanboy game to get more viewers interested in the game they were specifically dropping $200 on (or about to) and discourage people from the competition.
C) Praise or criticism of the developers when launches/changes/no-changes occurred.
D) Other
There are other reasons of course, and many things discussed in this thread I agree with.
Well, searching is fine on my Nokia phone, since we're disclosing brands now.
I thought when I saw this thread that it was going to be something like:
"This website has become another echo chamber, just like MOP."
Because that's what I see MOP as - they deliver good news, but their "community" so-to-speak are like an echo chamber where even the site owners join in and parrot each other and pat themselves on the back and anyone who doesn't share their opinions is swiftly ignored, ousted and sometimes muted. I've seen people who have different opinions there, their whole "community" jumps them for daring to have a different opinion, and after a while the user in question just stops posting, I doubt they just decided not to, but more likely they post, but their comments don't appear anymore, because the owners are sick of dealing with outsiders to their sacred echo chamber.
I think in that regard this website is still better as people are still allowed to have opinions and free speech.
But in terms of article quality, this website really dropped the ball. There are like 2-3 credible writers and everyone else feel like some outsource laborers from who knows where.
Agree on the community and moderation being a lot worse on MoP which is why this site is my favorite place to post.
Seems from others responses I'm not alone in my smart phone search challenge, so since you aren't having a problem must be something causing it for us
What browser are you using, and presumably your Nokia is Android, yes?
I'm using Kiwi browser, which is on the Google Play store. It's a Chromium browser and a Chrome clone all the way down except for a number ofs features - it allows you to install Chromium extensions from the Chrome Web Store and I have Privacy Badger and uBlock Origin on Kiwi. And it has background playback (meaning you can play stuff with your browser on the background or screen turned off.
I basically come here to visit The Pub and General Gaming. I'll see if there is anything new in Off Topic. I neither play MMORPGs currently nor have very little interest in any new ones coming out. I may catch some "news" in passing (usually here by some poster) in passing but I certainly don't "actively look for any news."
I take issue with the idea reddit is an improvement, seems mostly like a less feature rich version of this site's Vanilla client so I do not understand why it is more popular with the masses.
I don't understand the appeal of reddit. It looks like a mess.
Reddit is a mess. I see it as a "one stop shop" for all of my interests. As a "one stop", it does nothing well. There I can join conversations about Skyrim, DAZ 3D modeling software (trying to learn), Star Wars KotOR, DNDadJokes, and a few others, all in one convenient bookmark.
It is unfortunately where some egomaniacs like to exercise what little power they grasp onto. It is becoming less and less "fun" to visit for me as I am NOT "woke enough" to participate in many sub-reddits, where true discourse and discussions have died

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
Semrush (the best in the biz) stats put them well over 2 million visits in Feb 2022 with 1.6 million being unique visitors
Am I one the "unique visitors", or just "run of the mill?" LOL

Reddit, the downvote system is quite cruel. It really buries threads because people don't like what is discussed rather than on any merit.
I leave an "insightful" to posts that have me looking at a poster's thoughts. Many I disagree with, but I can see where they are coming from. When posters get into pissing contests, I move on. Nothing to read here

Probably what happens when you cultivate a forum for the old whiney vets that constantly talk about the "good ol' days"
No one cares how great you think the PvP in DAoC was, that was 20 years ago.
Is there something about that which prevents you from creating a topic about how great you think new game XYZ is? And explaining why? And being able to withstand some folks who might feel differently? And perish the thought, maybe actually persuade someone to your viewpoint?
The whole point of a discussion forum is to have different points of view.
Two behaviours I have observed or even been on the receiving end of that discourage discussion:
- People saying directly that they do not want to hear unpopular opinions, often followed by insults (we do not want to hear you shill/make threads for NFT/Star Citizen/P2W games). There is no point or motivation in trying to persuade a mob that behaves like this and people that face such responses in bulk will simply leave. It has nothing to do with being able to withstand resistance. Just a "what's the point".
- Echo chamber mentality: many people here openly admit to being fans of old school mmo's, especially Everquest, and are resistant and sometimes downright hostile to newer designs and trends, and their players (snide comments about "attention spans" , "lazyness" etc). People that are interested in newer trends simply find nothing interesting in the discussions taking part in these forums.
Yeah, I'm on of those "old school" posters
What I miss in the "old games" are worlds where players got lost in for hours/days/weeks at a time. Games where when I logged off, I dreamed about what my next time playing. At work, I'd be going through site after about the MMORPG. I could not wait to log back in. I don't feel that with games of today.
I'm always interested in others hopes, dreams, and desires for games. Mostly what I see are MMOs that basically just fighting simulators with little else to do in the games. If that's what players desire, that's cool! I don't begrudge them a bit. I may lament the fun I was seeking "in the old days", but those MMORPGs changed and died out, no longer significant.
EQ was my MMORPG of choice, but I certainly don't want EQ 3.0. However, a game with factions, with hard lines drawn that make every race and class different (not the same), I'd love to see. But then again, I'm an alt-oholic
I do feel your frustration, though, and I am able to see it myself

MMO genre is dead, and this site after it changed is hard to navigate.
Well, for me I bookmarked the discussions page, NOT the front page. I start off right here on the discussions page. Easy navigation for me, but I do understand that navigating the rest of the site is not "fun", for most folks

I disagree its the games we miss the most, its the communities we played the games with. Quite a few of the "golden oldies" are still around, I don't feel like playing them, as I know the fellow players that made them a special memory are all long gone.
Also while I agree we old bastards can be closed minded at times, I vehemently disagree that blockchain has any business being added to gaming. Its not a game improvement feature, just another way for the game maker to slip their hand into your wallet.
Quality of content, as well as accuracy, is a big deal.
The level of quality from the current writers and columnists employed here is worse than ever before (and let's be frank, it was never terribly good to begin with).
Constant errors, incorrect statements and corrections being made by the reader (who is often more informed here than the writer).
It just isn't worth spending much time here anymore. Many of us who are long time readers just check in quick these days to see what's new, then leave.
