If all it takes is some hype to get people to play absolutely anything at all, then why are so many games commercial failures? Are there a bunch of publishers who don't realize that their games would have been successful if only they had been hyped more?
I am not sure that is the contention here? It is that people need to play something, it is a pastime they love and expect to always have something on hand to snack on. Or as I think of it:
I think the reason why so many people 'play garbage' as it were is simply because they dont know. The reality is, any mmo(rpgs) has a large percentage that simply does not research most of whatever it is they are playing. Of course that could be entirely their fault for not following certain reports about whatever it is they are interested in, but some people do genuinely like to engage in things blind and just have more fun uncovering things for themselves or with others within the game. I would say to a certain extent testing has not mattered for some time now. My prime example would have to be Archeage when it was in its beta phase. Many people argued that the game was at its best in that period and release changed many things for the sake of monetization. So regardless of how good something is in testing, there's no real way to gauge how good something will be until it releases. But going back to my first point, some people (myself included sometimes) just love the starting days of a fresh mmorpg and can feel like its worth it even if it lasts only for '30 days' or however long.
I'll offer that it's always been a money making business.
But like everything, once someone sees the potential for a LOT of money, they tend to take advantage of it.
Yeah, they always
wanted to make money, they just didn’t have a clue how much money could be made
so most of the game companies early on were more developer run then say pure
businessman / corporate folks. I know some developers are also great at business,
but I generally see them under the vast brush of artistic / creative people
trying to bring their vision to life.
You are dead
on when you said they see the potential for a lot of money, they take advantage
of it. Once that happened in the gaming industry (I think I read something
about it generating more money than Movies and Sports combined a few years ago)
it was inevitable that business folks would have to take over the reins.
I honestly don’t
know if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but there is seemingly an endless
supply of interesting / different style games to play both AAA and indie. The
MMORPG markets due to the initial investment cost and potential for missing the
payoff not as much.
Or is the problem really that you don't enjoy any games all that much?
If so, time for a new hobby. My wife enjoys painting barnyard plaques, maybe you could try that instead?
Some of this strikes me as funny:
-By saying "Don't keep proving delete5230 right".... your saying that I'm right, but your asking him not to say it... I just find it strange how you worded that !
-You seem to think I'm saying all games are garbage. No, I'm saying people will play garbage.
@Kyleran you just seem to be off your game a little. Usually your up to speed more.
-You seem to think I'm saying all games are garbage. No, I'm saying people will play garbage.
But garbage for you is games which got released unfinished due to the circumstances they've been in.
While garbage for me is games which are actually bad.
No, I mean games that are both, but more in the lines of actually bed. However I could understand why you would conclude that by my example of opening Vanguard where the coding was all screwed up, EVERYONE KNEW IT yet everyone played it anyway.
P.S. I loved Vanguard, but took years for me to get a computer to play it, and it also had slowly got fixed, but I did love it.

The line about not proving you right was supposed to be funny, in a tongue in cheek fashion but I guess my delivery missed the mark some.
I originally was trying to point how gamers who play games you feel are garbage probably disagree and enjoy them.
Then comes a reply I can't really get my head around, that people actually do play games that they feel are repetitive crap.
I mean, who does this? (Well at least one person) Why do this?
If I really could not find decent value in a game I'd never play it, period.
Sometimes I read that some do this in order to hang with their friends.... weird.
If my "friends" are playing something I don't want to or think is "garbage," well it's time to go out and make new friends in a game I will enjoy.

Does that mean you don't wanna play Star Citizen with me?
Not sure I'll live long enough to see the release day arrive, but assuming I am and the kids haven't put me in the home yet, sure, I give it a try with you.

Don't let them put you in a home. Me personally I already have a plan for that. When that day comes, I'll plant some weed on them and call the cops

I think you were right first time, delete is correct. It is all a matter of how much of a gamer you are. Remember when Angry Birds became really popular and we had politicians saying they played it so they could look culturally relevant? That was likely all they played and so it was the best thing ever. For those of us who have had a ten, twenty, thirty, even forty year history with gaming a game has to jump a higher bar. So to me many may think something is good enough to play, but to me it is leaning to the garbage dump (or just second rate) and that's down to the lack of games they have played.
The other factor is so many young gamers don't know that the future of gaming was meant to be fully 3d open world extravaganzas, which was how things looked going into the noughties. But partly due to to the curbing of sky rocketing computing power, partly due to studios seeing what they could get away with and partly due to indie that vison has not been realised. So yes I see an awful lot of second rate out there, it may not be garbage but that's just nomenclature.

What's Star Citizen? Never heard of it...
Its kinda like Bomberman.
Well, no. Bomberman DID happen almost 40 years ago............................. SC ? Where are you?

I hate card games with a passion, so the diplomacy in Vanguard was a huge pain in the butt.
