I always question the background of new (well I think he is) article writers:
"Kevin "Xevrin" is an avid gamer having started playing video games on an Apple III with the Wizardry Series and Questron before the age of 10."
Didn't even get to the end of what he wrote...Box Ticked: PASS.
Going to ask about how much easier this game is than the last, always an issue, but after what happened to the last Civ I really focus on that aspect now.

I read things like this with mixed feelings. The Apple III came out in 1980. By that time, I had been a net programmer and chip designer for 5 years already.
Just for fun, in 1980, a 300mb disk cost $15,000 and was the size of a washing machine. 3 of those makes 1 gig. My home PC has 3 terabytes, so 3,000 washing machines at the cost of $45 MILLION dollars.
I always got the impression that the Gal Civ series focused a bit too much on micromanaging. Eventually that much fiddly detail will deter even the grognardiest grognard.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

well at least it's a turn based game, micro managing become a real problem in an RTS type game
Gal Civ is suchs great series , I have thousands of hours combined in the first 3 , looking forward to it. When it gets to Steam.
Scorchien got banned? What'd he do?
My guess is calling certain people a liar and acting petty to the point of being almost openly hostile in another thread. A shame to see really and really didn’t come as a surprise to me tbh. Hopefully he’ll be back and a bit more relaxed.

Ikcin in response to yours sincerely debating whether or not single-player offline MMOs exist...
'This does not apply just to ED but SC or any other game. What they will get is Rebirth/X4, likely prettier but equally underwhelming and pointless.
It is incredibly difficult to design some meaningfull leg content that would fit a space ship game - simply because it is not a leg game.
It is just huge resource waste....'

This is what made Spellforce 3 feel chaotic instead of very enjoyable for me. There were several other things that made but amidst that there was just chaos. Tower of Time has this slow-mode toggle that allows for easier management in complex battles that I love. That's just a part based tactical game though. I'm not sure how well that would translate to a massive 4X.
I tried on micro managing on huge scale stellaris, it's a pain after a while I just give it to sector AI, the AI is pretty dumb, but when the empire gets very large, even if the AI is dumb, it manage to take off some of the burden. Future 4x games should implement something sector AI. Distant world 2 also comes to mind where all the trade income is fully automated, too bad it crashed the game when the empire gets too large.

I am starting to wonder if the site should think about sending chillout pills to everyone. Had a bad day? Pop one before you type.
While I appreciate the rather thorough explanations, I do feel this may not gave been the right person to review the game. The complaints, while not invalid, are standard fare for new players to the series/genre. It lends a negative tone to things that are, in fact, part of how the games ARE.
You get similar issues when having an unfamiliar person review FPS games. Often it's "too hard", or "not enough exploration". These are things that indicate your expectations are not in line with what defines the genre.
I think this person is a good writer. I just don't think they should be writing reviews for genres they aren't familiar with playing regularly. Imagine if I drink beer regularly, but casually have a glass of wine or 2 once in a while and tried to offer an in-depth review and comparison on a specific wine. It just... won't work.

You obviously haven't heard of TikTok or YouTube. People are making millions on those platforms talking about things they have no familiarity with.

We have had this discussion in many forms before. How much of an expert do you need to be for a genre to review? I go back to the days of gaming magazines and as a staff reviewer they just reviewed what they were given, even when they did come to specialize they did not just review "their" genres. I would also say I trusted reviews back then more than I do now. So I don't think expertise with a genre is needed, just expertise with gaming.
However it is fair to say that a better perspective would be had if any subsequent previews were made by someone who was steeped in the genre. That's a lot of hassle though, at least two staffers now have to play the game, so I am not sure that's viable.

All good points. For me, I take any single review with a grain of salt. The more reviews I read from a single individual, the more I begin to trust what they have to say. Over time you get a feel for their likes and dislikes and how those align with my own personal preference. Then, even when they are reviewing a game that isn't normally in their wheelhouse, I am aware of that and know that what they are writing comes from that perspective. I also know if they hand out 8s and 9s like candy or give everything 6s and 7s because nothing is ever good enough, just like I would gamers that I personally know.
