The new Data Center Travel feature for Final Fantasy XIV continues to see high demand, and after some emergency maintenance on "cross-world" features overnight, the team is planning a hotfix to change the system for greater stability.

FFS... they botched housing so badly, and utterly failed to fix it time and again over the course of 10 years, that they had to implement a lottery system. A LOTTERY SYSTEM to get a house. Please show me another MMO - even one on consoles (like, say, ESO) - that has had to implement a LOTTERY to get a house because their implementation was so inadequate and buried in band-aids. And then they couldn't even get the lottery working right!
And yet... STILL... players run to their defense.
Were this any other MMO, the calls to fire YoshiP and his entire team would have started a long time ago. I've seen just that reaction for *far* less in other titles.
It's amazing how much incompetence people will tolerate... nevermind defend... once they've bound their identities up in something.
I agree with you in terms of that it's popular. But it's also kind of an appeal to popularity that ignores a very clear fact: There's plenty of other viable alternatives. Everyone isn't playing FFXIV.
Overall, FFXIV's popularity has fallen off pretty significantly since its big bump. The bandwagon has moved on to new games, taking all the wagon-hoppers with it.
There are many people - avid MMO players - whom unironically couldn't even tell you what FFXIV is about, except that it's a FF game, it's a themepark MMO, and it had a big popularity spike a little while back due to an exodus from WoW, because Blizzard couldn't put the foot gun down.
FFXIV has become very popular, yes. But it hasn't, and I dare say, never will reach the level of "household name" that WoW still is to this day. At least not outside its Eastern market.
Personally...
I think ESO is overall a better MMO than FFXIV for a variety of reasons, some of which are objective fact:
- Proper, attainable player housing with none of the insane restrictions plaguing XIV's.
- Actual, fully fleshed out public dungeons (something YoshiP has said wouldn't be possible due to platform limitations, yet ESO is on those same platforms.. hmmm)
- High level of customization for character builds, providing tons of variety and options, even within a single Class. YoshiP said such customization would be "too stressful" for players - yet ESO's players handle and enjoy it just fine. What does that say about XIV players? Or, at least, what YoshiP thinks of them?
... to name a few.
Of course, whether or how much those things matter is still subjective. Some people couldn't care less about in-game housing, etc.
I also think GW2 is overall a better MMO than FFXIV for a variety of reasons. Several of them in common with ESO.
Speaking of which, I jumped back into GW2 a little while back, after years away from it (I last played during Heart of Thorns), and am enjoying it all over again. Which feels nice, to be honest.
All that to say, while I agree with you in general, I don't think FFXIV's popularity it's so impactful in the big picture anymore. It hasn't been one of the most popular MMOs on Twitch in a long time.
Which does still leave the absurdity of how much crap its fans will tolerate, even excuse.
