Richard Garriott has been shown to be a total fake. When he is at the helm and in charge no good game ever came out of it. One failure after another.
Except Akalabeth, Ultima I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VII, IX and X...
The guy was creating computer games when many of you guys weren't even born.
Akalabeth, created in 1979, even had 3D dungeons.
Just like that old Bruce Springsteen song, Glory Days...
Besides, his past accomplishments do not excuse everything that has transpired since then.
I don't disagree on that, but calling him, I quote, a "total fake", is silly when talking about the guy who created some of the best computer RPGs of all times.
But it's not surprising around here, this forum is full of jealous posters who don't miss one occasion to hate Garriott. As I said... he was in space, not you guys. Thanks to his work.
PS: comparing his first games to pong is silly. Richard didn't have Atari behind him, he sold Akalabeth in ziplock bags for $5. He still made over $150000 out of it, not bad for a student job. I doubt any of you made that much while he was a student.

The early Ultima games were simply the first of the computer RPG's at that time, but calling it the best computer RPGs of all times is total hyperbole.
All Ultima games combined by 1997 only sold altogether combined around 2 million copies. (that's with all countless re-releases on new platforms included.... yeah EA already started that cash-grab trick way back then).
Just to throw a sales example. Link, The Legend of Zelda released back in the second half of the 80's and that first game alone sold over 6,5 million copies.
Might and Magic series sold over 4 million copies by the end 90's.
The Bard's Tale was actually the most succesful early computer RPG, with most units sold in that time. Outselling all Ultima games combined in the 80's.
Again, it was the Ultima Online MMORPG that put the Ultima series on the map and becoming a surprising hit. Again, no thanks to Richard Garriott, but Raph Koster. But even UO was quickly surpassed by EverQuest 1 when that launched.
RG just took all the credit and fame and cashed in and (ab)used it to scam people (and companies) the following years till now, with one major failure after the other.
So in the end... Richard Garriott might have had a stroke of genius back in the late 70's and managed to create some decent games way back then, but that surely is no longer helping him out. His last Ultima game he was truly involved in was Ultima 7 back in 1992.
This reminds me of Henry Ford. "He's the best car designer ever! He designed the Model-T, which pioneered the car and also the factory that made it. He's a legend. So he's the best guy to design a new car today."
Except, he's dead.
As for his NFT game, my prediction is that it will fail, but not before RG takes in enough cash to feel successful.

Well... no, nevermind, only cartoon villains brag about their plans and achievements.

Funny they chose to say Creators of Ultima instead of Shroud of the Avatar. Probably because Garriot is still just riding his past achievements in every money grab he can.
Seriously ? He was to space ? You want me to give a frak if someone was in space ? Seriously ??!?!?
It's kind of impressive. A lot of time and effort goes into preparing to travel into space even as a tourist. It's not just buying an expensive ticket and off you go.

When trying to sell something new people are more inclined to ride in on their stallion of success than their gelding of gaffes.
You all need to understand that Richard Garriot is a wild-eyed idea guy, not a great project manager. That's why he dragged Starr Long along with him for so many years. A lot of Garriot's failures of the past decade or two I put on Long, because his very job was to ride herd on Garriot's excess.
The excess in Tabula Rasa was spending years adding and redoing things til NCSoft finally booted him to just a figurehead position. (Hmmn, sounds familar). And SotA was original intended to be something rather different, but fans and funding were only available for retread Ultima concepts. Of course, having a willing horse doesn't mean you have to ride it, especially when it's likely to be spavined.
But yeah, very much right to be suspicious. Like certain other developers, Garriot hasn't done much succesfully since leaving the Origin System campground.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Asshole is going to sell land before the game is even fleshed out lol. But knowing gamers and reading their contortionist apologetics in these forums about everything from lootboxes, to gacha to P2W to NFTs, I'm sure some will bite.
Enjoy!
Lol man relax.
Too bad it's this guy doing it. I do not like anything about his game philosophy.
Absolutely terrific that someone with the resources to get it done is doing it. Make no mistake it will get done.
It just might be the pve, farmer, crafter, housing guys dream as well.

If history has shown anything Richard only makes games using other people's money, rarely committing much of his own funds to the effort.
When the going gets tough, Richard bails and goes running...

"after the Kickstarter launched, the creators posted an update: they would be pausing development and putting the project on hold because they had run out of money. "We leaned into the crypto market and expanded rapidly off the back of the positive interest. When the crash came, we ended up heavily exposed with too short of a runway."

Hey folks we found a future land speculator in Garriot's game. I knew there'd be some.

White-knighting for him isn't going to earn you a pat on the back from Garriot.
As for the reasons for him getting into space, it wasn't because of his work, it was because he scammed people. He was all like "we need so much money to fix Tabula Rasa and we can put out the update" And then we see a notice about how he went into space. That did not sit well with any one.
He has not had a successful game that he churned out since Ultima. He is literally "resting on his laurels".

That's a level of grift worthy of crypto bros.
The only good news is that anyone who pre ordered should be able to get their money back from their credit card company.
He has not had a successful game that he churned out since Ultima. He is literally "resting on his laurels".
Not spam, just replace the words "escort" and "girl" with "NFT" and it reads like some of the other posts here.
