In a recent interview, Final Fantasy XIV's Naoki Yoshida stated he'd like to make at least one more MMORPG from scratch before he died. It got Bradford thinking: who would I want helming the next great MMO?

Chris Roberts. So he can finally start making a great game, or an MMORPG. I’ll see myself out now.

I don't know that picking an established MMORPG leader has actually worked well.  They may have succeeded once, but their second try seems to always fall into a cautious 'repeat what worked before' category.  If they are attempting only to 'give people something similar to X'. is it any wonder that people say 'seen this, done that' and move on.

So, I'm actually looking for someone new.  Someone who will focus on the RP and MM aspects of the MMORPG.  They shouldn't repeat a past project, with different graphics.  Do something new and innovative to take the genre to new heights.

I would choose the top ten game devs from Japan, Korea, and America to collaborate and create something unique, innovative, and magnificent.

Mateusz Kanik, a 15 year vet with CDPR who served as a design director and worked on everything from the original Witcher to CP77.

Pair him Kristoffer Touborg, who was one of the early design leads for EVE Online during its heyday, before he left CCP....  To help Riot design League of Legends.

I guess it is kind of a tradeoff.

Do you want somebody who has already succeeded, and has demonstrated skill in producing quality results on time?

Or do you want a visionary who comes up with something new, meaning nobody has experience doing it?

Perhaps a competent studio with both types of people?

I feel like every successful mmo lead from the past has followed up with complete failures later on. Success in the past is no guarantee of success in the future. In a way, it can even be a barrier, see Illusory Superiority. I believe the next big mmo will be headed by someone relatively unknown.

    None.

Look at Richard Garriott, he made Ultima Online and everything else he's done has sucked monkey.

Look at Brad McQuaid, he made EverQuest and everything else he did sucked monkey.

Look at Mark Jacobs, he made Dark Age of Camelot and everything else he's done has sucked monkey.

Naoki Yoshida's turn on the monkey is coming.

I want someone at the top that is a skilled project manager with proves excellence in delivering on time and within budget.

Then I let that person hire creative talent.

Then I structure compensation so that it incentivizes timely delivery but also sales (initial and ongoing).   Cut them into the pie so that they are incentivized to deliver a great product but also a product that does not languish in development hell.

I don't tend to follow studios or creators, let me see the reviews as past performance does not..blah blah.

But whoever came up with the questing in Lotro, TSW and SWTOR, whoever did the RvR in DAOC, the housing in AC, the 'scenarios' in WO and the graphics in BDO would be an all star team.

I've had a couple of really good managers in my career. They know enough about the technical issues not to get snowed under if I'm not there. And if the manager isn't there, I'm good enough at management to keep us from getting committed to something stupid.

The problem with him is your company would need at least 500M just to get a semi-playable demo......

Chris Roberts is a visionary, who apparently has little or no skill in project management. He needs to be working under a skilled project manager with firm deadlines and milestones.

I wouldn't choose any of existing MMO developers. Each and every MMO I have played had plenty of flaws in it (especially in terms of very, VERY limited gameplay variety) and I don't want same sociopathic, narrow-minded people create another game with same flaws.
