Yeah, not many people like hitting a boss with a lot of HP. And you're right that the support role is severely reduced.
But there's indeed nothing fun about feeling strong all the time. It works well at the start of the game, but not after that.
Thus, I think the right thing to do is to diversify the combat (still talking about the boss fight). It shouldn't be a simple slashing of his HP bar. You know, the boss should have phases and different attacks.

Yes, that is ideal. Taking on a really tough Boss and losing, knowing that few can win that battle, but doing well enough to last a while before wiping, and having some pride in that fact...that does seem like good stuff to me. Makes you want to go try it again in the attempt to succeed and be among "the few."

But honestly, I can see a comment about wanting to relax with some coasting, after a hard day at work, etc. Calling that "entertainment" indicates to me that said gamer needs some real entertainment to break out of the doldrums.
