I just got burned by the Fractured Online refund policy. I was told no refund because 'it wasn't returned in an unopened state. 15 minutes broke their policy..1 minute would break their policy..ludicrous. I should hav waited for steam release then done it, but I was ansy in my pansy
Never again!
Less than 48 hours later, I've done the same thing. Hoping it turns out better. Still, having been burned not 48 hours ago, why wouldn't I wait for steam?
It dawned on me, that I'm desperate for a new MMO. I like the excitement of launch day and the gnashing of teeth a ND rending of garments. I like that first character creation and learning the mechanics. The enjoyment of first exploring a new univers.
It's been a bit. I've had games I've had fun in, but nothing to get that sense of adventure. So, I think I'm grasping at straws. I did today what I said I would never do again. It's like when I play the lottery (which I rarely do). It's not the fact that lost. It's the fact that if I buy a lottery ticket, I'm convinced that this it it! So when I do lose, it's much more. Said
Anyone else, in this kinda 'help me obi wan MMO. You are my only hope?

Or just put some effort into finding some other hobby to enjoy - go do skydiving, or fishing, or build your own "dream" AR-15 rifle out of custom parts made by PSA/Anderson/Aero/Brownells/Noveske, or buy and restore old cars/houses then maybe flip them for higher price (or donate them to people who may need them), or start your own farm to grow marijuana to sell it to dispensaries (if you live in a right place).
Anything is better than sulking in self-pity while posting on interwebs about your "desperation" of getting "that nostalgic MMO feeling of adventure" back (which you may never get back no matter how many new games you'll throw money on).

To be fair I did reinstall New World and am working on leveling a few things so I can give their new content a fair shake. I don't have confidence in Amazon Games being able to pull off a comeback a la FFARR or No Man's Sky. However, in their defense, I have only paid $40. A free look at the next content expansion is more than fair.
I was in that same boat in the mid to late 2000's. I started playing MMORPG's in 2001 with DAoC, swapped to SWG in 2004, and MMO hopped for the next 6 years. I was searching for something in newer MMORPG's that I had in the earlier MMORPG's. That was group-based leveling, where you gathered a group to go grind camps with down-time built in for socialization. Since MMORPG's aren't like that anymore, I had to change in order to like the newer MMORPG's. I had to learn to appreciate the solo questing experience with grouping reserved primarily for instanced content.
This has led to a different playstyle that leaves me more fluid in what I can enjoy and for how long. Now I don't stay subscribed to MMORPG's. I'll pick up a new one or expansion if it's interesting and then quit when it no longer is, or when the developer's build in obvious mechanics whose only purpose is to waste my time. I haven't played a MMORPG since New World released. Instead, I've been working on my backlog of single player steam games that I bought, but never played. I have enough steam games to last me 2 years minimum.
Enjoying SPG's has taken the pressure off finding a MMORPG to enjoy, as have my career, wife, and newborn son. I don't have time to dedicate to the parts of the MMORPG I enjoy, which is the grouped content and raids. At least not the way the communities are across the MMORPG's. Communities are too much in a rush to complete things, and always creating barriers to entry for joining their groups that aren't realistic for natural progression and are rude to people learning.
My point is, try changing your attitude on what you enjoy and take the time to enjoy the games you're firing up. If that isn't doing it for you, play another genre. You'll be surprised at how refreshed you are for the MMORPG genre when you've had a multi-year break from it.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
I would always recommend a gamer keep only one MMORPG in their stable.... But never recommend they play only that game. This genre isn't in the shape it was when it first emerged, and trying to play it like it's still in that first golden era will only lead to frustration, burnout, and a desperate gullibility that leads to getting taken advantage of. That's not a value judgement on anyone; it will happen to anyone who isn't careful in limiting their time spent following this genre specifically.
I have about a half a dozen in dev MMORPG projects in my Discord, but I make it a point to avoid browsing them more than once every month or so to avoid becoming too attached to any one idea or project.

Because even with emulated servers old MMOs are mostly the same but the people playing them are not.
