Anyone know why they forced the original guy out when it was going to be Saga of Lucima? (is that right?) I know he is on here because his portrait shows up as he reacts to people. I would love to hear how he feels about the game and how different it is from his original idea.
I stopped playing but got a few days out of it. They released it that is all I can say. It functions well I will give them that but its not my cup of tea either. I need a little bit more polish. Not graphics. I don't care. I just need some animations and the like. The game to be seems like it was years ready from release. Like they have a really good Alpha but there needs to be something more if that makes sense
I guess the reason they say it is an EQ clone could be because of the Holy Trinity. However the Holy Trinity in EQ was Tank, Healer and Crowd Control. In WoW the CC was replaced by DPS.
WoW was developed from ideas from many of the old school games but they added their own flavour to it that managed to capture a lot more players than all the old school games put together.
In Everquest it was very difficult to do a decent experience group without an Enchanter. Enchanters were treated like VIPs and so were Clerics in guilds because they brought the 96% rez. Yeah you're going to want that high quality rez during raids where you can have multiple deaths in one session.
Some guilds went out of their way to cultivate their Clerics and Enchanters and they were always given priority for groups and items because it benefited the whole guild to have a lot of Enchanters and Clerics for raiding.
I can totally understand why people might dislike Everquest but if you're talking old school games , there can be no better example that Embers seems to be trying to follow.

Not sure you've actually ever played EQ
Or even Vanilla WoW... to say there was no crowd control needed in Vanilla WoW is just not true.

I imagine he is obliged to not say too much, there was a lot more "vision" shall we say when he was at the helm. I think this is an EA myself but then I am stretching...hang on Lost Ark, that was already out for years before it got here. I was trying to think of a MMO that has launched in the last three years that I have not thought was really still in an EA stage. It is the form now, you launch way before you should.

I was talking about what the Holy Trinity is not whether WoW has Crowd Control which it has. The definition of Holy Trinity was changed in WoW because it was not the same as it was in Everquest where crowd control was far more important. Of course WoW has CC.
If you ask what the Holy Trinity is today they will tell you it is tank, heal and dps.
I played Everquest from 1999. I was merely sharing my ideas on why people feel WoW is an EQ clone but obviously others feel different but spare me your doubts on whether I actually played Everquest.

And they do tell you. Ever since they had a dungeon group finder back in the WotLK days, the roles you could select have always been tank, healer, or DPS.
CC need in WOW groups was only ever a thing for the first little bit with the saps and sheeping but it changed into the typical modern MMO AOE DPSfest pretty quickly.
As to calling WOW "old school" that's just wrong. It was middle school at best

It used to be pay to play. Then it became pay to test. Then it became pay to test and play later. Now its pay for the concept. So when a game releases, even if its in early alpha stage, people are actually shocked.
I acted on that intense desire and loaded up P99 Everquest.
Oh god took me hours to change keybinds and arrange windows and I'm still unable to get used to it. I have been totally spoilt by games today so much so that I basically forgotten how to play these older games. Shame on me I guess.
I decided not to play any of my higher level toons for fear of killing them and I started a Freeport Human Magician to get the feel of the game again and I died on my first pull. Yeah I didn't con the mob. WoW what a feeling it was lying there bleeding out.
Old-school / new-school isn't a particularly helpful definition as it mostly references how old something is, and has nothing to do with design or features or anything else important. That said, there have been 3 "generations" of MMORPGs so far, and I find this much more useful.
The 1st generation of MMOs was 1999-2004, and I think of it as the age of experimentation. None of the devs had a clue what they were doing, budgets were tiny, oversight was non-existent. We got a lot of diverse ideas, some were great, some were terrible. All 1st gen MMOs were niche, because the whole genre was niche.
The 2nd generation of MMOs was 2004-2014, and was started by WoW. This era was defined by WoWs huge success and everyone else trying to emulate that success. In other words, an era of WoW clones. This did result in extremely high quality themeparks, but at the expense of all other ideas.
The 3rd generation of MMOs is 2014-now and is defined by the rise of action combat, western devs leaving the market leading to the dominance of asian studios.
Pretty much everyone on these forums has been around since the first generation, and so when we say "old-school", we're referencing those first generation of games. But, if you only entered the genre recently then anything pre-2014 will feel old-school.
So, depending on your perspective, WoW (vanilla) is old-school, but it's definitely not first gen and therefore cant really be compared to the likes of EQ, SWG or DAoC.

I agree with you mostly. But what I find interesting, is there is a Niche of vocal people in the community that say "old school" they are really talking EQ. They are not talking UO or SWG-pre CU. This is probably because they never played UO.
My broad definition of old school, is basically before the time of hand holding, and EZ mode.
I can also agree, the MMO genre can generally be split into 3 distinct inflection points the way you did.

I'm very much around, and was never forced out despite what SOME may have claimed on their "private" forums where they thought they could tell their own version of events without rebuttal; neither did my brother and I abandon the project. There are legal complexities at play that I simply cannot discuss due to ongoing arbitration. We will happily tell the REAL story when we are legally in the clear to do so Until that time, we tend to simply work on our current project and let this play out how it's going to play out.

So what's the current project? Enquiring minds and all that.
It's a 5th edition tabletop setting (sourcebook + first module came out in May of this year), combined with an ongoing book series published in serlialized format on our Patreon (chapters are out twice a month), and a point-and-click PC game set in the same world coming out this winter (we're aiming for a holiday release). Free demo of that is over on the Patreon page for interested parties
We've been livestreaming our campaign on Sunday nights on Twitch for some months now, with myself + Nathan Napalm + Bountycode + Sparoh + Skinnie + my brother and my wife, and Nathan did some artwork for the sourcebook as well. We started with the prequel campaign (levels 1-4) and are now into the actual Season 1 content.
And yeah as someone else mentioned my signature link heads over to our page

Man, we've been having a blast the past year or so that we've been doing this with our VTT livestreams. Currently using Fantasy Grounds (we love it), and HUGELY hyped about D&D Beyond's own VTT coming out...whenever that is =P Looks awesome in beta so far. I think you are a Foundry lover, but I'll forgive you =P They all offer some pretty groovy tools for those of us who love tabletop.

Any thoughts on TaleSpire or a better alternative?
Yeah, D&D Beyond's upcoming VTT is literally TaleSpire on steroids. It's TaleSpire with a budget. Looks lightyears beyond TaleSpire and it's only in beta.

Old school definitely includes UO and SWG, as well as the MUDs. I think UO and MUDs aren't always mentioned because they weren't 3D.

Old school definitely includes UO and SWG, as well as the MUDs. I think UO and MUDs aren't always mentioned because they weren't 3D.
I agree they should be counted, people that played UO for awhile will usually count it. But mostly people don't count UO in old school.
This is why some people say old school things are:
Lack of inventory or storage Lack of fast travel and teleportation Lack of mounts Slow health/mana recovery Rare potions Super rare gear or gear that doesn't have a lot of cool traits/stats and stuff on it.
In UO these were all not a problem at all. UO went the other way on these things and was completely opposite.
Plenty of storage Instant travel Mounts extremely early Mana regen/Health regen no problem/Cheap bandage healing to full/Multiple heal spells Potions were plentiful, easy to make, found everywhere, no cooldowns Awesome gear with all kinds of cool features on it, multiple random stats/skills on it.
So if people are counting UO as "old school", then why do people say those things are old school ideas? Obviously they where not, they were EQ specific.
