Will the Western MMO Development market die and the Asian MMO development take its place here?

MMOExposedMMOExposed Member RarePosts: 7,400
Looking at other industries, I see a pattern. Cost of making stuff just keeps going up and up here in the west, but the Asian countries seem to be able to pump out despite these set backs.

We been seeing a slow down when it comes to high quality MMOs from western development, but a steady rise of eastern MMOs coming to our market.

How long before the Asian MMO market overtakes the western MMO market in general?

The game design theory for Western and Eastern MMOs seem different because of cultural Normal.

In the past we seen how sometimes these two cultural differences arent just a language barrier, and can compromise the game's life in the West. Look at Archeage for an example of this.

I wonder, as the Asian MMO take over the western market, will traditional western MMO consumer mindset also adjust and change? How fast can we expect that adjustment to take?

Will? That ship sailed years ago, only a few significant western MMOs in the works I know of, Riots new title, Ashes, err, Star Citizen... Starting to run out, help me out folks.

But hey, Embers Adrift released this year, but they are more in the minor event category like CU, Pantheon etc.

Oh, I forgot, Bethesda has one on the way, yes? Haven't heard much about it lately.

Zenimax Online to be more specific and you haven't heard anything about it because they're still keeping it quiet.

All they have said is that yes, they're working on one. Whether it's B2P, F2P, mobile or whatever is still not known.

Western MMOs sometimes even those crowd funded already look to the east to work out how to monetarize their games. Monetarization has a profound effect on gameplay, so our old style western MMOs have seen a massive change in gameplay.

Right, you gotta introduce a ton of grind to not-so-gently encourage the player to visit the cash shop to buy their boosters. I'm SO glad we dispensed with subscriptions in favor of FTP. The experience is SO much better! (Not)

That depends largely on the players. The more we support domestically made MMORPGs the more lucrative they are to maintain and attractive to develop.

Embers Adrift is a least in the category of event. The others remain prospectively so.

There was a huge rumor on the Starfield Reddit that it could be a Starfield MMO based on some things Zenimax and Bethesda have said. Means we could get an announcement next year if it is

We are complaining about eastern influence while doing down anything CF that comes out. The question is how much graphics and solid game systems are we willing to sacrifice to have an old or at least old/new school feel? Not much/many it seems; the CF games are restrained by their budget, but we expect a game as solidly well rounded as WoW or Lotro.

Yea, same here. I don't care who made the games and in which country, as long as the English translation is good (and foreign companies like Square Enix do proper effort to make sure that it is good) and game is fun - I will gladly play it. This goes for MMOs and for all other games. And also non-gaming products as well (I do not suffer from mental illness called "patriotism").

I'm going to ignore that rumor so I don't get hyped. That would be awesome if true :)

It's not just cultural, also economic. The masses in many Eastern countries don't have as much spare cash to spend as in the West, so FtP has dominated (and brought along it's negatives).
And it's spread to the West.

The worst part is that, according to many, that battle is lost.
It's not, but there are a lot of unqualified producers who want to "get theirs", and a lot of RMTers who want to "get theirs" along on that ride, and they've won the PR battles to convince western players, and thus the western producers, that there's no hope.

    Once upon a time....

There was a time in entertainment that West could produce quality products.  If the quality is good enough you can demand a decent price.  However if the west continues to lower its quality to the lowest denominator, than all that's left is price.  The west will lose the price war every time.

Where has the creativity and quality gone?

Now people are saying to support very low quality western products just to send a message?  What message would that send?  That customers are sheep and will support trash products?   How about they make amazing cutting edge games again, then see if they cant demand a decent price for it.

Tell me what MMO exists that is so amazing but at the same time too expensive that nobody is buying it?

Most of 'em are only able to do the "same-old-same-old." Half of them screw that up too.
There's surely are a few who are capable of creating a great game that breaks that mold.

Huge dollar investment is probably the big issue.
I'm sure the moneybags being told that only the same-old-same-old can work.

EVE Online, definitely not the same-old-same-old and at $19.99 a month has a price certain to cause many folks heartburn.

Exactly so, contributing to the largely self-imposed dearth of options complained about by many. If you're open to hardly anything your options will be next to nothing.

If people want new things they must demonstrate a willingness to embrace them. Otherwise you'll keep getting much the same or little of anything if such is generally no longer seen as profitable to provide.

Well that says something about EVE and the older MMO's that they can still get a sub after all this time.

It also says something about these new MMO that cant get the average person to dish out a sub, so they resort to whales, trickery and impulse buying.

Game has to be pretty good if you want the average player to dish out $240 per year on it.

It is a hard sell though, I recognise how critical of everything from SotA to Embers I have been, others on here have acknowledged this as well. But this is the devil and the deep blue sea, you either drop graphical and gaming system standards or accept a gameplay based around monetarization. Is either the right choice, I just can't say. Even in games where newer MMOs had gaming systems we did not like (from lotro to ESO) we did it our way to mitigate the changes. In other words, the guild saw systems it did not like and said no, we will do this our way as a guild.

So we could say, these new CF MMOs are not at the standard we expect but at least our way of playing is a good fit, we don't have to worry guild members will be disadvantaged by doing it our way. This discussion has occurred, some have gone to an Embers sort of MMO, for most like me it was too much of a leap.

I would place both Everquest and FFXI as my top games from my gaming experience. One is Western the other Eastern. I don't play games because they come from some place, I play a good game.

If the West continues to make crappy shit they will not get me to play. If Eastern developers manage better games I will play them.

Plus I am Asian so I have always played just the games I think are good and I have never really paid much attention to where they come from.
