Having sex related content would be fine if there was a way to prevent non adults from playing the MMORPG that has it, but as there isn't I feel like there isn't any place for it, as it's just asking for predators to go after the non adult audience.

It was weird enough playing FFXIV and seeing that my FC had an entire sex board on discord where they all have nude / sex mods for FFXIV and they hang out in the housing district with other FC's for "activities". Would have been fine but I'm almost positive there was underage people in that FC. Also that FC had not mentioned anything adult, it was advertised as a social FC.

If you're going to have sex in a game, then you'd better make sure that it's instanced only, or else it's going to constantly be shoved in the face of people who don't want to see it.  The only real exception is if a game is primarily about sex.

I don't see the need for instanced only sexual content so long as prospective players are made aware of that possibility prior to purchase. It doesn't matter if the game is primarily about sex or not. The entire real world isn't about sex and there are still those that have it in places that risk public exposure.

As long as the game is rated appropriately, then I don't care. Kids/teens should not be allowed in a game like that.

Back on topic, my best friend divorced a few years ago and says he has a blast on dedicated multiplayer sexual games. You know some equivalent of second life but more centered on the sexual aspect.

I don't see a problem with that as long as people are adult.

Simply put adult games should be for adults.

One interesting aspect he mentioned is the fact that people have sometimes real relationships in this kind of games! Himself, he met some ladies IRL after dating them in the game. He also told me some cyberpunk-like stories like the one of that guy who fell in love with an African girl (real one not the avatar), but he is married in real life and can only meet the digital version of his new love. As you can bet, changing partner is frequent, but people get jealous! There is a lot of drama, catfish, etc.

He is currently writing a book about this experience.

This would be fine except for one major problem, anyone can just turn on or off the option to if it exists or purchase offending games that don't allow control of same. And yes, parents should police their kids but many times don't.

Frankly, it is not needed no matter the game. Make games fun but leave the sex out.

As online games attempt to focus on novel experiences, what role, if any should sex have in MMORPGs?

None. Why? Kids and sexual predators. Put the two together in an online world with anonymity and you're asking for trouble. Add a game that allows actual depiction of sex, and the "grooming" gets that much easier for the predator.

While we're at it stop sexualizing children in MMOs. No one is fooled by saying they're some "ancient race that ages slowly". Bullshit. You're creating an online playground for pedophiles. Stop.

Agreed, however, if the anonymity was removed by having you to sign in how Korean Gaming companies make you sign in with your SSN... This would remove that factor, I bet you a lot of people would behave a lot more too. Cheaters would drop a ton as well.

If you are talking about Roleplaying. None. Unless you are playing with a girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, or husband, or a friend then there is no way to know if that person you are roleplaying with is 7 or 18. You may not even be trying to do something slimy but you could easily be doing so.

If you are talking video game wise. Like its a part of the story, the way characters are dressed, etc... Then I don't think there is a problem with it. I mean games are rated "M" for a reason. Its my job as parent to tell my kids not to play games like that.

A private place. Meaning something like a private in-game residence of some person, away from public view. As a person who actually participated in various eRP activities in various games (out of curiosity) - these activities should absolutely be allowed to exist (because plenty of adults enjoy these), but not in public view in any of public areas (because many other adults do not enjoy seeing those activities for various reasons).

As for simple-minded idiots who say "...but think of kids!" - underaged persons should not be playing any video games (including MMORPGs) without their parent or legal guardian's supervision, and adult persons should not be denied the right to enjoy more adult-oriented activities together with other adults (again, in privacy of their in-game residences) just because few parents/legal guardians are too lazy to properly monitor what their children are doing online.

A good analogy would be Discord: there are plenty of adult-oriented private servers hosted by Discord, where adults share NSFW material and participate in adult-oriented conversations, but all of that is happening in privacy of private servers, something you won't see unless you manually join such private server, and you're always free to use other Discord servers without any NSFW material or any adult-oriented conversations in them. And while it is possible for underaged persons to join such adult-oriented private Discord servers - it is still not a responsibility of Discord to prevent that from happening (this is a 100% responsibility of parents and legal guardians of those underage persons, they are the ones who must monitor their children's online activities) and Discord should NEVER ban all NSFW material and all adult-oriented conversations from all private Discord servers.

Lineage 2 imho was the first to bring the pantilooms and jiggly bits, nothing wrong with it. As in spread them cheeks and prepare for the lancer, I think thatr doesn't belong in mmos unless it is done comically like animie.

I disagree @user298 f a game is rated "T" then i think kids should be allowed to play it and it is expected that kids will play it. As for parents should be supervising at all times... it sounds like you don't have any kids. You can't supervise your kid at all times while they are doing much of anything. Its not fair to the parent and its not fair to kid. The thing is as a parent you should teach your kid what to do and what not to do online with strangers and supervise here and there to make sure they are following the rules.

I dislike it.  If you're a parent with kids, your kids will watch you play games.  Things can get very awkward if games are too explicit.   I don't mind when a game is based off of being inappropriate, like Grand Theft Auto.  I can just avoid those.  It's when it's sneaky and mostly appropriate.  I've been playing a mobile game where you get extra currency for watching ads, and the adds are all for crazily sexualized little girls in games.  That is extremely disturbing to me.  I have no problem with x rated games aimed at an adult audience.  I have so much problem with games aimed at everyone with mostly naked hyper-sexualized little girls.
The ad problem is a huge problem. I have games download on my IPad that are learning tools. We homeschool and they are widely regarded as great to supplement with actual schoolbooks. With the election coming up on November 8th, if you are in the states, its all political.

Trump won, Trump lost, this is bad, this is good. A learning app for 3-8 years old should not have those types of ads

That argument has literally never held any weight, even in universe, because these characters are also biologically children by the standards of their own race.

A game with explicit sex should never get a T rating.  At minimum, it's M for mature if there are some mitigating factors, but you're probably looking at an AO rating.  Hardly any games get rated Adults Only because most of the games that would merit such a rating don't bother getting rated.

Parents shouldn't be expected to track down every little thing in a game to see if it's safe for their kids.  But they should be expected to realize that if a game is rated AO and says that it has explicit sex, then it has explicit sex, so act accordingly.

Perhaps the bigger concern from a ratings perspective is that a game that should be rated AO doesn't get a rating at all to warn parents about it.

It really is funny that our society holds the act of making life to be less age-appropriate viewing than the act of taking life. Just a philosophic observation.

Violence, often times comical and overdone, doesn't generally hold the same weight as sex, especially in an MMO space. Violent games or games rated as mature are one thing. Comical violence or violence that you'd see in an MMO, which is basically whack something with a weapon until it collapses due to numbers popping up over its head (no blood, etc) isn't quite as bad as gratuitous sex. Especially since sex in an MMO space (Erp, etc) often time attracts creeps, and it allows them to seek out and find/manipulate vulnerable people, or kids.

You simply cannot explain things about democracy to them. So just "lol" at this type of comments and move on.

Here's the thing, sex is generally considered to be a private thing, most folks are a bit uncomfortable when farm animals get it on in public. (Get a barn you two)

    :)

Violence on the other hand is often done in plain view, heck humans build arenas to watch people have at each other, like boxing or MMA rings, American Football and of course, lion feeding shows.

Unless you're talking about vulgar graphic violence, in which case we are top tier competitors.
