Andrew Meggs shares on leaving CSE, CU, VR & moving to Meta

He left this post on the CU subreddit earlier today.

"O HAI. Sooner or later someone was gonna notice.

One thing that needs a smidge of clarification is the timeline of all this: I originally told CSE of my intention to transition out of the company way back in January of 2021, roughly a year after the public debut of Final Stand: Ragnarok. The reasons for that decision need to stay between me and CSE, but the thing to take away is that those reasons were and are entirely between me and CSE. My decision to accept an offer from Meta was a mostly independent thing that happened over 18 months later.

In the interest of giving the entire team at CSE the best chance for success, I accommodated a VERY long transition period between those two decisions. But the whole point of a transition is that eventually you come out the other side, so anyone saying "Andrew left CSE for Meta" is weaving a story out of some very finely-split hairs.

I'm only one person, and it wasn't the end for CSE when I started that transition, nor will this be the end for them now. I have great respect for the technical leadership of George, Christina, Tim, and others there, and I think they're well-positioned to carry CSE's tech forward in whatever directions CSE decides to pursue.

Mostly, though, I want to thank everyone who supported us along the way. Back when Camelot Unchained was CSE's sole focus, you were the best thing about CSE.

As far as "Why Meta?", well... I actually do believe in the vision of a Metaverse, and for now Meta's way out in front of everyone else. Quest headset sales are competitive with Xbox Series X|S consoles, and the line keeps going up. While the tech in-crowd was busy getting clicks by dunking on it, I saw a quiet revolution growing among people who don't read Rock-Paper-Shotgun or The Verge. I saw my friend in law enforcement, who's never called herself a gamer but takes her Quest on work travel to escape from her hotel room at night. I saw my young nephew, who has no idea what RTX is but knows that he's more excited about his Quest than Fortnite or Playstation. And while the avatars have room for improvement, that's why there was a job for me to help improve them. Maybe it'll succeed and maybe it won't, but either way I'll be in the (virtual) room where it happens. Gonna be a ride."

Recent business articles on Meta don't seem to stack at all with the paradise he's trying to sell it as. Seems he just has a track record of choosing bad companies, or he joins because he knows they're going to fail but the paychecks won't bounce for a while.
    Nice find Kyleran.

Yeah they had updated their citystateentertainment website with the current Team and those who started but did not complete the journey section now includes Andrew Meggs.

Reading this its telling there is no mention of Jacobs and he seems to imply some kind of dissatisfaction about Final stand Ragnarok when thanking his supporters "Back when Camelot Unchained was CSE's sole focus, you were the best thing about CSE".

Yeah the VR hardware is pretty cool (going to get one for myself sometime in 2023 mostly to see what its like for No Man's Sky) but the Metaverse idea seems a bit much. Makes me think of the first Nintendo Wii system, everyone made these Mii avatars or even the Office where Dwight made a second life character.
