I just got a free weekend invite.
:'(  It's sad because I've been following this game for years before it changed names. It is a true mmorpg.  But sadly, it doesn't have enough content within the world to be fun.
That content may come down the line, wait until then, don't give up hope, we are all in the same boat.

So, you expect @delete5230 to pay the subscription while the developers decide what and if they are going to do?  No one should pay premium prices for an incomplete product, no matter what the product.  After subscribing for possible years, chances are good that expanded content that might make the game a bit more complete will come in the form of an expansion, with a separate price.  People are expected to support producers just because they are desperate for a game.  Wow, has the world changed.

I did not think he is going down the line of paying the sub (is he?), I was speaking more generally. We have all been in (or are in) the boat of wondering if there is (or will be) a MMO for us out there. Having gone over our options many times before I will just say don't give up hope, maybe today we will only play them for three months and never go back, but if you enjoyed that three months, that's good enough.

And yes we need a bigger content, better looking and more fully featured boat, that shark representing my MMO Hunger is not going to be taken down by anything less. :)

More like 2 weeks  to 1 month.  Just saying, 3 months is extremely optimistic.

Well Embers went the subscription route and that may have killed them in the end. Well the F2P games with monetization work better even when we hate it because the majority of the players won't pay a subscription.

The irony is that players don't want to commit to a subscription even when the cash shop seems to make them spend more because the cash shop gives them the illusion of control over their spending. You may end up paying more but it seems to satisfy the player that they can drop and pick up the game when they want and spend according to their needs.

Embers needs to rethink their sub option.

Embers Adrift is a hobby project built by amateurs in their spare time, it always has been. The idea that they are a “real” company with financial targets and all of that just isn’t applicable here. Whether all of it is any good is up for debate but they did exactly what they wanted to do and actually have more of a product then a veteran like Marc Jacobs does with his real company. They made a game and released it, everything else is icing on the cake, even being a (modest) success.

Will it survive? Probably not. Is it worse then every professional product out there? Definitely not.

    /Cheers,
    Lahnmir

Well lets look at your claim this is a hobby project.  Then why did they release a half finished game?  The reason because they ran out of money.  What costs are there really to develop a game?  Not much if people are working for free.

Someone was getting paid, that sounds like a job.
Did they release because of that? I have been following them for quite a few years but might have missed that piece of information. Where/when/who did they share it?

    /Cheers,
    Lahnmir
I think they alluded to that.  But lets say that is not the case right?  Isn't them running out of money a better reason than the alternatives?

Why would a small company like this release a game with only 20% of its content complete and all of its systems are completely shoddy?  They built a basic tutorial zone plus a little bit more, then left the rest of the game unfinished.  The only other reason would be a cash grab, loss of a indispensable key person, etc...

This is just 1 step above Dreamworld where they did the graphics for 1 side of a building but not the other side.

The only other likely scenario other than running out of money to finish would be some sort of scam.  Which I am not saying it is.

I am pretty sure its lack of money combined with lack of competence in this case.

Not sure why this company deserves a pass, they are charging full price for the game plus a sub.   If you go to a small restaurant, just because its a small independent doesn't mean you should served trash or get food poisoning.  There is a minimum standard you expect when you purchase something.

I can't agree more. Until now, I have same answer

Even if they removed the subscription it's not like that will get people to play it.

They need to rethink the entire game.

The thing with subscription games is that they need to merit being paid a subscription in the first place.  Especially so for incomplete games.  This game had delusions of adequacy.

The game has subscribers so some feel it merited. All MMORPGs not yet in maintenance mode are incomplete so that isn't even a point against them. Enough feel it adequate that the game is still plugging away.

Some people will try to make us believe, that the plan from the start was to make a very niche game and the devs are actually happy with these numbers.  50 people concurrent is apparently all the rage.

Even the devs have come out saying they are happy with the numbers.  But then again mysteriously they have their community organizer begging people to come back and support the game so the game has enough players to group up.

But hey let the devs make the game they want, who cares about the suckers that bought in.

Well to that end I tried to find some population data and couldn't. It's not on steam so no steam charts. The twicth videos are pretty pathetic with really low view counts and there was nobody live with Embers Adrift to watch it.

How hard is it to form or join a group? How many people are actually playing? Can you do a /who and see in game?

Are we talking double digit concurrency here?

Yeah its possible to see number in game, as there is a /who feature.  They limited it to only show anything below 100 people a few days after they launched because the numbers were so low (back then they had around 500 concurrent).  However you have to have a sub to see the numbers.  Only a few fanbois left, so true numbers are going to be hard to get.  I have seen some threads recently talking about somewhere between 20 - 99 concurrent players at primetime depending on which fanboy you listen too.  Recently I have only heard numbers over 100 on free to the public weekends.

The main complaint people are having is they feel the game focuses too much on groups and there are not enough people in a zone to fill a full group.  Max group size is 6, there is like 6 zones so you do the math.

Even if they were to suddenly get 99 people to play all the time, yeah thats just such a small number its embarassing.

But hey at least the devs got to make the game they wanted.
