when are Dev's gonna learn that PvP centric games just dont make it. here to another fail game that could have been a block buster title. iam sure theres gonna be people that disagree but you look at the top juggernauts in the industry like WOW, FFIV ect. you wanna be like the big boys then you ve gotta do things like the big boys.
More Kickstarter, "Early Access", paid alpha fraud. When are these developers going to be held liable for their false promises, scams, and greed? They're fleecing unsuspecting people who believe they're investing in a real project.
When you get a major scam like Theranos, or FTX, the courts and government step in and put a stop to it. But in the gaming industry, it's apparently just okay to take the money and run. No legal consequences, no liability.

It *does* appear that money 'invested' in seemingly legitimate money-making schemes get far more attention from governments than the money lost to gaming industry projects. As someone who follows games more than investment markets, I'd rather see the government put some teeth behind existing consumer protection laws. It would certainly help deter some of the gaming-related fraud.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
DAOC was one of the best MMO's ever created. it was created by a small team, including Jacobs, for less than 5 million and in 3 years if I remember correct.
Everything I ever seen, was DAOC was made in 18months and $2.5mil

A lot depends on the amount of money involved. If you make $1 billion disappear, that's certainly going to draw a lot of attention from the authorities. If you make $1 million disappear, that's going to draw less scrutiny.
There's also the question of whether they can prove that there was fraud. What got Scam Bank-Fraud (or whatever his name is) in trouble is not just that FTX collapsed, but that he had spent tens or hundreds of millions of dollars of what was really his customers' money on things unrelated to his business, such as political donations, funding friendly media, or buying a bunch of property in the Bahamas.
If a game developer raises $10 million on Kickstarter, uses $5 million to buy some investments unrelated to the game, and then declares that the game is out of money and stops development, then you can point to that $5 million and cry fraud. But if he spends the full $10 million on developing the game, runs out of money, and doesn't have the game in a decent state, is that really fraud? At minimum, it's a lot harder to prove that it's fraud.
Fundamentally, when you crowdfund a game, you're paying for a developer's promise that he'll use the money to make his best effort at building the promised game. It should be understood by people who consider donating that he might fail for a variety of reasons. If he does use all of the money that funded the game to make his best effort, but runs out of money with the game still wildly incomplete, I'd say that's not fraud. Perhaps he should be obligated to shove the game out the door in a broken state to demonstrate what the money was spent on, but I wouldn't call it fraud.
No one will care about this game by the time it comes out (it won't) cause most of the people who do will die of old age or be physically unable to play it anymore due to health reasons.

I came to this thread excited to find out a release date for CU!
But it was just click-bait.
There is no launch hype. There is no launch date. And despite the article, I didn't see anything that the fans are actually divided about.
So, this article really just felt like someone's boss had a go at them for not writing anything in a while, and so they pumped out this generic shite which included nothing new whatever. Perhaps it was written using that chatgpt tool from the pub?

Naw, the chatbot would've done a better job probably.

So they managed to put together a working game that doesn't look like something from the 90's with 9 fps? Last I checked the beta client was in a pathetic state, unplayable.
I think all we have with the MMORPG genre is the hope that the games being developed are actually released in a way similar to how they were sold to us during development. That seems to be the biggest problem. We get "hyped" and they change the game drastically before release... if it's released at all.
I keep hoping for a VR MMO with some real depth. I still think it's the future of the genre.
Agreed; past glory days aside- crowdfunding is just having a heck of a time. xD
Like really the only good thing i've seen come out of crowdfunding video game-wise (personally); is that super successful Koji Igarashi game 'Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night'; which is still getting content updates btw.
Why can't people just take their game projects to early access on steam and build from there? It seems like steam early access sees more success and actual accountability of it's game management versus just letting games devs play monopoly with peoples money with no consequences aside from online backlash.

Once again, regardless of how split the population is, how much they complain here about every game in development, how much they hate the developer, etc., most of us will try it when it's released.
Another disaster from Jacobs but Im happy to see it talked about again if only to laugh about Final Stand:Ragnarok, a game thats still on steam for $20 which has had a mighty THREE players on it maximum lmao
So whats the chance of either of these two games coming out then, or is this effectively another CoE without them admitting then denying it?
I guess the main difference is that CU is a failure and CoE is a scam. The former has a, somewhat, playable product that is severely lacking while the latter has never shown an actual product, and what was shown later differed so much from what was initially shown while funding that there is no relationship whatsoever between pitch and reality.
Mind, CU could still turn into a scam if they know it will never properly materialize and keep plugging it as ‘soon.’ Right now it is just really bad. …. Or so I have heard, NDA and all……
/Cheers, Lahnmir
I don't know, to me CU is starting to turn into a scam. I donated first day Kickstarter to support a MMORPG being developed that resonated with me. The expectation was that some time in the future said game would either get released or fail, that's the risk I was taking.
What I did not expect was for them to take the money and run with developing a very different product like a game engine. I can't play a game engine, why would I support a kick starter for that? I don't get entertainment value out of that which is what I'm looking for when supporting a kick starter... I basically get nothing from that. I mean, when they start licensing or selling this game engine am I going to get a cut of the profits?
That is what is weird to me, it's basically a bait and switch.
I really need to see what this game actually looks like at this stage, because that's a lot of money. Although probably not nearly enough to make a real genuine attempt at a.... what type of game is this supposed to be again?
Next-gen? current-gen? Something that looks like it was made in a particular video game era? That super small screenshot shows almost nothing of what this game is supposed to be.
