Pantheon for instance hasn't gotten 15mil but it got 3 million dollars in funding, as also hired new key hires, and also has been focusing on engine development as they are building there own from scratch.
As far as I know Pantheon still uses Unity. What they have done themselves or are in the process of creating themselves is the network code and the assets (so far they have used many purchased ones).
What I did not expect was for them to take the money and run with developing a very different product like a game engine. I can't play a game engine, why would I support a kick starter for that?
Because their vision, which you backed, can only be realized if they use an appropriate engine ... and since such an engine didn't exist back then, they had to write one themselves.
I thought, they made that clear in the course of the Kickstarter campaign.

They actually shared an early view of their new engine during the Kickstarter, and said it could be wrapped up and ready along with the rest of the game in a couple - three years.
8 plus years later and still no real evidence (playable game) for the average viewer to confirm that the engine will perform in the manner in which it was first advertised.

Right. It should have been clear to them from the beginning that it would take more than the estimated 3 years. After all, they started from scratch.
Nevertheless, it was clear from the beginning that an engine would be developed parallel to the game (which makes the game possible in the first place!).
I'd rather it still have a chance, than it be a confirmed failure.
The recent money influx is a surprise. That's not a small amount. I had nearly given up on it. $15 million is enough to launch it. What launches is what I'll judge it on.
The current state of the game is similar to Pantheon. It's tech heavy with the game needing to catch up. They lack too much to be anything near a true "Beta".

There is a massive difference between making a in house game engine to support the game you are developing vs productizing a game engine to be sold to other developers. They did not communicate that they wanted to productize the game engine. I would have never supported that.

Why not? It makes a LOT of sense.
