What's notable is only $750 and up backers have access to pre-alpha.....
FOMO is very strong for the $500 tier "Alpha" backers right now.
What's another $250?
That's what has always struck me with these guys. They seem to not even have the monetization part down right (also the reason why they are perpetually on the brink of folding).

Still Pre-Alpha??! No ty. I am.. or was.. really excited about Pantheon, but I'm done paying attention to (or giving money to) anything that isn't nearing an actual release. Hey, Star Citizen.. can I have my 50 bucks back from.. 2014? Thx.
I'd love to see it launch, and for the longest time I ignored the haters/doubters, but pragmatically speaking I wouldn't be surprised if it withers and dies. There a few factors that don't bode well:
1) They clearly don't have the resources to develop fast enough to keep pace with technology. Whatever they'd launch would feel outdated on Day 1. I personally don't care about outdated engines/graphics but too many people do.
2) We are way past the saturation point, I don't see how they'd draw enough of a base to sustain whatever ambitious world they managed to release.

Even for fresh AAA the saturation point comes after a few years, for games that have been followed in development like this you can reach that point before they launch. One reason why I only skim such announcements.
Scammers would have been much better at raising money. I don’t think these guys are scammers. They just haven’t had effective project management. And their fundraising campaign sucks.

They were announcing Pre-Alpha's 3 years ago. I'm a backer. But it just seems ever since their pitch man/Creator passed away, this MMO's development has gone slowly down hill on a long slope.

I would argue it's gotten better.
They finally have better tools at their disposal, they've made it so they can create sets of armor/equipment that will fit every humanoid as opposed to having to create multiple sets because of, I presume, different skeletons.
It's almost as if going forward they've become a bit more professional in their development.

It can't be understated how monthly testing is a significant step forward. A major obstacle to entering alpha was the game client not able to support the 8,000 alpha backers. In one of the recent tests, there was over 500 players in a single area and the client remained stable. I imagine that was the milestone to go ahead with monthly tests. Even Ashes isn't doing monthly testing and they define their status as alpha.

Not sure it's as big a step as you think. Camelot Unchained has had weekly "Beta" testing for almost 5 years.

It's a big step in the context of client stability and getting ready to seamlessly support thousands of players. I only mentioned Ashes is because I love teasing their supporters. Just sayin, Ashes aint in monthly testing.

careful what you say. If they do go into Alpha 2 as most people are guessing at the moment then they will be in 24/7 testing with no NDA.

That would blow Pantheon out of the water quick
Will it?
I do think so actually. They showed a lot of progress this year. They have been teasing next year will be huge for a while and they have teased showing off the Node system in the next few months. My money would be on September-October Alpha 2 starts.
I usually wouldn't bet on any of these MMO's but I am confident on that. Now, will the Alpha 2 be any good and worth streaming.... Who knows?
I thought about be coming a backer to play in the pre alpha's once a month but I saw the prices and came to my senses
As a backer, I can tell you it's absolutely not worth it just to "play" the game. Only reason to pledge is because you want to support and help the game develop.

I root for Ashes even though it's not my type of game. Need as many indie developers to have success in the mmo space as possible. My teasing is all in fun and I truly wish them well.
I'm mostly not interested in the game because it's going to be subscription-based.
Secondly I'm not interested in it, because it will take so long to release, I might die before I get to see it released.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

Playing the alphas is the perk to that type of donation/backing. It's not really worth it (for most) to pay that amount "just" to play the alphas.
Unless of course that amount is insignificant.
