So the other day someone on here asked what would be the
#1 thing you would need in your perfect MMO. Since than I have been thinking about this question on and off. Def as I keep hearing about all these MMO's in active Development. So here we go.
The World:
I love Urban Fantasy. It's my favorite genre of novels and I would love to spend countless hours inside of one. I have thought hard about where a game like this should start and I think unlike most Urban fantasy, which takes place in a large city, I think the perfect start would be a smaller one. Maybe twenty miles outside of Chicago, New York City, LA, etc... A modest sized city. Maybe a city of 100k people. In this world humans live side by side with monsters though some of them do choose to live outside of confines in sewers and the like.
I love a story focused MMO's like FFXIV. So I would want the same here. A story that builds and builds over its expansions. Drawing people in the longer it goes. Problem something to do with angels and demons.
Magic:
Magic it exists but isn't like something you would see in WoW, FFXIV, and most MMO's on the market. No raining fireballs or anything like that. Magic is dangerous but its not going to level a city.
Classes:
I don't want a classless system. I actually don't care for them. I want the classic Tank, Healer, DPS. Instead of Warrior, Mage, and Cleric however you can do Firefighter, Nurse, and Warlock. I think players would grasp it if you let see a sample of higher lvl spells and abilities along with maybe what the class excels at.
Also I would love to see class centric quests that tie to the main plot in small ways. Maybe giving you a better understanding on characters.
End Game:
I would love a deep end game. People love the story but they stick around for the great endgame. Crafing, Dungeons, Raids, etc... Its there. Its rewarding.
Gear:
I want legendary gear. Gear that is hard to obtain. Very hard and not everyone is going to get it and that's the point. Make people see a character and know that if they work hard and put the hours in they too can get that super rare drop.
For that reason as well I want horizontal progress. I think vertical progression is good for the early game. Feeling your stats going up but I think once you hit max level and you are getting end game gear stats shouldn't matter. For me a lot of MMO's, def in later expansions, have really high barrier of entries in end game because of the gear score. People always say play WoW it won't take long to hit max level but what they don't tell you is how long it takes to get good gear.

Kim Harrison. The Rachel Morgan series was the first I read. Really good series.
I am attempting to write my own. I have always dreamed of being a writer and publishing a book. Probably will not happen but I enjoy writing for myself so I will see the series through anyway

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
Angles and demons are religious, MMOs indeed games try to steer clear of gods these days whether they are in a pantheon or not. Somebody out there might not buy the game because it has gods, leave them out marketing cries!
Both of which are a shame, there should be room at the MMO inn (( sorry )) for what you are talking about there.
Other posters and you wanted some humour, a personal anathema of mine except in the right setting and fantasy is not automatically that setting. Not even Bruce Willis wisecracked his way through the whole of Die Hard, nor did Hellboy, that was spot on; but the TV series The Dresden Files was a gag hell for me. If you don't take the material seriously why should I? Fortunately for me the average gamer seems not like his MMOs too humour filled either, so that's panned out well for me.
But an urban fantasy setting would be a great idea, though I am thinking more like True Blood or The Magicians.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
