If you're so committed to the idea of giving money, where's my check? And the checks for every other forum member? I'll even do the paperwork to get myself qualified as a IRC §501(c)(3) Organization. That will be far more in line with the law than any crowdfunding scheme.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

They are failing with other people's money though.
No one held a gun to funders heads. In that kind of logic, the stock market should've shut down by now...
IDK about you but in the stock market I make money. KS is just another name for panhandling.
That would apply to anyone with an idea looking for investors.
Investors provide money on the promise of greater future returns of more money.
Kickstarters are basically soliciting free money with no real obligation to deliver on promises.

We live in a society with free speech. If Kickstarter MMOs don't have a chance because of free speech then that's a problem with Kickstarter MMOs, not with free speech.

I'm not sure I follow your thinking...
If a Kickstarter funds, then they received the money that they asked for (or sometimes a lot more). That money, according to Kickstarter's policy, is supposed to be enough to fully deliver what they said they would deliver.
How on earth can anyone on here have impacted that company's failure to deliver what they said they could do when they took the money?
Quite contrary to your contention... Kickstarter MMOS had EVERY CHANCE to succeed. They had great goodwill. All they had to do was do what they claimed they could do, and since most of these failed projects came from "industry vets" they should have had an idea on how much it would cost to do what they claimed they could do.
So no, don't toss this at the feet of the community. The failure of these Kickstarters falls 100% at the feet of the people who ran the Kickstarter, said they could do something, took the money, and failed to deliver. 100%. Not even a tiny fraction of the failure belongs to the community. So lets get that straight.

To the author's question I have to my shame crowdfunded 3 titles: Star Citizen, Chronicles of Elyria, and Camelot Unchained. Fortunately the latter two was in the tens of dollars amount. Star Citizen I believed in at one point and backed quite a bit of money.
I have zero expectation that any of these titles will release at all much less release in a state that lives up to the vision sold in the Kickstarter. For me that's enough. I don't kickstart anything anymore. Seems everyone is trying to hop on the crowdfunding bandwagon. I see products all the time in my Facebook feed seeking for crowdfunding investment. Some of them actually look really cool and I hope they take off. However, they're going to have to take off without my investment because I've just been burned enough already. Not looking to quadruple down on the crowdfunding failures in my life, thanks.

Yeah.. by the time Elyria came around I was very suspect of what he was promising, but I bought into what MJ and Roberts were selling.
On the plus side, for some unknown reason someone wanted to buy my Pathfinder Online account for well over $1000. Even though I was quite openly critical of the game on here someone messaged me and we made a deal. Those profits have far outweighed anything else I tossed on a Kickstarter. So I guess I shouldnt really be as down on them as I am, but at the end of the day I just want to play the games we were promised, not make money off it.

Nothing you wrote explains that statement. At all. A developer asks for money to make a game. A developer is given that money (and often much more) A developer fails to produce said game.
And your contention is that somehow, the reason for that developers failure (and that the developer never even had a chance) is because of critical posts and articles on a forum.
That's not how this works.

In the article, it's been deemed a good thing for crowdfunded failing. It'sa conditioning of and an ideology that was created by big developers to regain control of monetary revenue lost from crowdfunding. IMHO!~
Until Star Citizen either collapses under it's own weight or eventually releases, Kickstarter can't die. Being one of the first and the biggest, they set the standard and pretty much make or break this freak of a game making abomination.
The second part of this story though, is that quite a bit of what should be kick starter version 2, on Steam, called early access. Often a lot easier to put out a shell of a game and cash in and out, with out even the base kick starter rules. I mean they say in plain ole English that they have NO responsibility to complete the game, nor if one is made, continue to support or let you play it. How great is that?
Gamers are the greatest fools and suckers that will never seem to stop gambling on what they wish to be true, but so, so, very often ever is.
Don't get me wrong. Some EA games turn out to be good. And they most often have SOMETHING that people can start and play a bit. Most likely have a far better reputation over kick starter as well.
But that safety net they have with ea...absolutely nothing people can do if they up and decide to just stop. They can make the game stop working any time they wish. Scary how many people buy these ea games like they do. And what absolute hell people give publishers....thinking how horrid they are? But then turn around and buy ea games...

But, that would make sense if the Crowdfunded games did not get their funding. But they did. Im some cases many times over what they said they needed.
If you ask for $1M and get $8M, and you fail to deliver the game... how can any article or post be even slightly responsible for that failure?
Sure, if they asked for $1M and got 100K... blame your psychological conditioning if you like. But it clearly doesn't apply here to games that received multiples of the money they said they needed.

Agree to a point, BUT.. with a Steam Early Access game you can download it and see for yourself, and then refund it if it proves to be an incomplete POS. Now, don't get me wrong, I think Early Access is a joke but at least they have SOMETHING playable and if that something turns out to be unfun or not worth the cost, you can refund on Steam.

Star Citizen has crowded more revenue then most 2nd level EA / Bliz/ACT developers. Granted its been over a decade of funding, but that is half a billion dollars out of the bigwigs pockets.

But in what way shape or form has any post or article prevented Chris Roberts from completing his game? Its been over a decade and part of the game (SC) is still in early Alpha and the other half has never been played at all (SQ 42).
That's not on the community. That is on Roberts.
Your whole premise does not make logical sense because if we were psychologically conditioned against them, they would never receive funding. Instead they get many times more than they asked for and the failure is not due to funding but due to the developer not being able to do what they said they would do.

I agree with the article. Now take it to heart and refuse to cover crowd funded games until actual release ( not alpha, beta, early access, etc ). I'd rather this site cover mostly singleplayer games with a smattering of mmorpg's than promote snake oil hucksters.
I run a forum that focuses on offline RPGs and quite honestly, there's not much to cover there either. If most of the users weren't interested in older 80s/90s titles, it would probably be dead. The video game industry saw a massive decline in turnaround starting in ~2014 and the pandemic only made it that much worse.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
Investors provide money on the promise of greater future returns of more money.
Kickstarters are basically soliciting free money with no real obligation to deliver on promises.

No, I will not fund any more in the future nor will I provide any additional funds to those already backed.
did you get a covid check ?

So again... NOTHING that the community did (or any article) caused the failure of these Kickstarters.
That was 100% on the developers who squandered the goodwill of the community and didn't come close to doing what they said they could do. 100% on them. 0% on us.

I will kindly disagree. I'm done trying to explain what is as clearly written as I could. Good day Sir.
A developer asks for money to make a game.
A developer is given that money (and often much more)
A developer fails to produce said game.
And your contention is that somehow, the reason for that developers failure (and that the developer never even had a chance) is because of critical posts and articles on a forum.
That's not how this works.

Star Citizen has crowded more revenue then most 2nd level EA / Bliz/ACT developers. Granted its been over a decade of funding, but that is half a billion dollars out of the bigwigs pockets.
That's not on the community. That is on Roberts.
Your whole premise does not make logical sense because if we were psychologically conditioned against them, they would never receive funding. Instead they get many times more than they asked for and the failure is not due to funding but due to the developer not being able to do what they said they would do.
