Yes, people have been playing around with Morrowind and full Voiceover. And all those Dagoth Ur meme videos. Which I like, won't lie.

AITA for despising this kind of content? MMORPGs are meant to be social, and these days almost everyone spends their entire gaming session in Discord. This kind of end game content gets in the way of that kind of cross communication. "Whoops sorry gang can't listen to you for a minute, some poxy NPC has to tell me his entire fucking life story that I could have just read in about ten seconds." I hated it in SW TOR I'd hate it in Wow or anything else. Now in a single player RPG I'd find it more acceptable but I think I'd still just prefer the old school reading the quest my damned self.

Maybe its just because I come from the era where voice in games was a massive rarity.... and we were happier damn it *slaps self*

I spend most of my time playing alone, so I'm not being social whether there is voice acting or not lol.

But I can see why you feel that way. Having a "cinematic" story experience with voice acting and cutscenes incentivizes players to disengage from each other to engage with the story. Though, there's many who prefer it, such as people who complain that FFXIV is not completely voice acted.

AI generated voice acting could also make for a worse experience if it sounds unnatural, flat, or inconsistent (i.e., if you can tell its AI).

Personally, I think would prefer human voice acting even if AI voice acting was good because knowing that the voice was from another person makes it feel more authentic and maybe even more immersive, somehow.

But maybe no voice acting really is the best of all, since you give the characters a fitting voice in your head. Still, I think this is a cool project.

So... the text isn't synthesized, but the voices are?  That's pretty impressive, either way.  I really wonder about the nuts and bolts of giving every single NPC a unique timbre.  The emotion of the dialog really came through, as well.

I think that's just you. Voiced NPCs are a staple of modern games and when they're not voiced the game just feels like some ancient ass relic to me.

I have zero problems using Discord while playing a game with voiced NPCs. Maybe your Discord is extra chatty?

Pretty much. It was already tested before with Skyrim, now it seems they are taking it a bit further.

You can test the AI voiced texts yourselves, just type in whatever you want and select the voice type you want to use.

Well being a hoary old relic myself probably does not help, combined with the issue of my friends in Discord don't all speak one universal language could certainly contribute to the problem.

I don't have anything against no voice acting(or minimal like in Morrowind). Know what I heavily dislike though? Partial voice acting. When random parts are voice acted(Pillars 1 and Tyranny iirc). I mean ... ??? .

I never read the NPC quest chat in WoW anyway (or indeed in most games) because most of it is just waffle anyway.  I click the NPC, accept quest, immediately exit and just follow the marker for them.  It's a great concept, hearing it read aloud, but since I don't bother reading the NPC text anyway, hearing it read would be even more irritating, so this isn't something I personally will ever use.

I am quite partial to stories and text and voices are a nice touch. I even listen to ARPG stories which are notoriously not what they are known for. I just like to know everything about what I am playing and feel like I am actually interested in the game world.

After all I am playing the game why not listen to their stories like I enjoyed the Grim Dawn and I still listen to the conversations 5 toons later. It's like a package deal and I am in no hurry so why not.

I admit to doing this as well.

With something like this AI voice quests I think it would make the whole game more immersive and I would enjoy playing it at a slower pace and having all the quests voiced. Plus it's a mod it's not like it's forced on you it's just something people could enjoy if they wanted to.

I think this would be great as a flavor and immersion add on. Not to mention the possibilities for indie devs who can't hire a bunch of voice actors.

When will developers learn that most people consume things like voice-overs and animated movies once, and only once?  Where's the Watch/Listen first-time only option?  Additional times are just wasting my time.

Are there still games that won't let you skip it if you don't want to hear it?

I can't remember the last time I couldn't skip it in a game. Must be decades ago.

I hit the ESC key as fast as possible to get through both voice chat and text chat on quests....I enjoyed  talking with other players, AI chat I have no interest at all......

I mean people with accessibility issues and otherwise had been asking for TTS voiceover features for quite some time now, so this was a good addition. I remember in January I was commenting on a forum on how to integrate an external text to speech reader codes with the OS/applications to get automated voiceovers. Some ideas failed but some worked. Good to see this addition.

I prefer a real people and real conversation and a headset. If I can buy mercenaries and create my own 8man, I should be able to talk to them like real people and run my group of mercenaries with voice commands, or what you would call AI conversation. Come to think of it, what a way to bring old era PvP back. Then you can really flex that IQ in everyone's face. It ain't easy running 8mans by yourself. Only the master's will truly shine.

Is it really AI if it's just doing text to speech? We've had that technology for years, but now suddenly it's "AI"? I think people are throwing around that term just to jump on a bandwagon far more than any actual AI being present. There's more to AI than just writing a program. Some sort of machine learning is supposed to be taking place.
  • mekheremekhere Member UncommonPosts: 273
Well, if AI can learn how to have real conversations like we talk to each other in an 8man group, we can teach AI to take voice commands and create a new kind of pvp strategy game. Essentially group leader against group leader and it will be as immersive as it gets. It should satisfy the immersive crowd and create a challenge only busy minds crave. Organizing absolute in game chaos.

Oh, it absolutely is taking place and it 100% is AI in this case. That's not to say that in too many cases these days it is nothing more than a buzzword, but this one's genuine.

Talking about WoW specifically, this addon's output comes with many quirks that you would expect from an AI, but the quality in general in not even comparable to previous text to speech generators. Dwarves and gnomes in particular are so awesomely voiced by the AI, it is a joy to listen to them.

On a more general AI voice note, I posted it in an earlier thread, but you will find this youtube channel useful if you want to see what an AI can do and how much it differs from traditional algorithms. The guy generates WH40k lore videos with David Attenborough's voice. Needless to say, such a feat would be impossible without AI (unless you kidnapped DA himself and forced him to narrate game videos).

Have a listen to this example:

Machine learning has been used to teach it to do text to speech.

We've had different text to speech technologies for decades, but this one has been taught with machine learning, so it's an AI.
