Another Designer Departs from Riot Games' Upcoming MMO, Leaving Many Questions Unanswered | MMORPG.com
In a surprising turn of events, Principal Game Designer Justin Hanson has announced his departure from Riot Games after more than six years with the company.
One leaving for "personal reasons"? OK, maybe. Then a second one also cites "personal reasons" a month later. This is starting to look like "personal reasons" is a cover story for something else
Kinda makes me think that there is some major disagreement about something in the higher echelons of Riot triggering these departures.

Remember the mass-exodus leading up to the release of Anthem? But that turned out to be a great game, didn't it....? Also didn't help that Ghostcrawler went to try and launch his own studio soon after leaving

Could be creative disagreements or could be that they know the game is bad and Riot is spinning their wheels trying to polish a turd.
So, with little hope of the the game ever coming out and even less hope of it being good might as well leave now with your career still mostly intact.
Or to put it another way: Riot has gone full Chris Roberts.

Or it could be not meeting milestones or scope creep which could be that Street and Hanson were going full Chris Roberts and Riot put a stop to it.
Or it could be that Street did in fact leave for personal reasons and Hanson thought he would be Street's replacement but he didn't get the promotion and is pissed.
Or it could be the Tencent overlords are pissed at something else entirely.
Or it could be any other conspiracy you want to invent.
All we know is that we don't know and won't know until someone gets in there and starts digging around for the scoop. Maybe Kotaku will strike again since they seem to be the only ones that ever try to ferret out something that resembles facts.

It could be nothing, and news outlets are trying to spin this into something bigger then it really is; because... you know, news outlet's these days tend to do that; like... alot.

When Ghost Crawler left, citing that he wants to spend more time with family, I explained that "spending more time with family" is coorporate jargon for "I have been fired" ( or "I quit" ) but am contractually obliged not to talk about it.
I was attacked even banned from reddit forums for being insensitive :,(

Then a very curious announcement that strangely coincided was that number of Riot veterans opened new MMO studio ( What a coincidence! - Not )
I said GhostCrawler is probably going to be in this studio but can not talk about it.

... Lo and behold few weeks after he announces it...

And so on and on.
Look people dont mass leave successful project in troves. Game Producer does not Quit or is Fired if something is not a major stinking failue.
...
Will Riot MMO be released one day? Maybe. Will it be good? Obviously not.
Whatever it will be, it will be constructed, patched and jerry rigged from stinking pile the failed Ghostcrawler MMO apparently was.

I personally believe that these developers simply defeated the all controlling alien mind worms Tencent forces upon all their staff and escaped to a wonderful life of freedom. ... I've said too much.

We leave a software company usually because of leadership. I have to deal with narrating 800 tickets a month line for line to an executive because they won't read the reports generated for the common issues. And each time I start to read them out as "required" the PM goes on a complete rant. Total waste of my time but just showing an example. Plus the bugs I report go unaddressed for months. Such is life/

I mean.. I know it's popular these days to always blame "the big guy at top" or management or something, but neither you nor I have any insight into the situation to say one way or the other. The project could be troubled for any number of reasons... it's not always some shadowy "big wig" at the root of every problem a project faces. Software development hard.
On the other hand, I really wanna see what they come up with.

*flips desk* "I quit."
That's the thing before there was only a sub. Now we have to pay weekly to have a looting pet, to get bank space, to post on the auction house, to own a mount or house and on and on and if you add all that up it is actually 2 to 3 times more than the sub.
Oh how dumb were we to embrace the F2P not that I ever did but just saying.

Which is why I believe the area of "greatest " innovation in MMORPGs the past decade or more has been the rise of a myriad of monetization mechanics, actual gameplay (aka the fun stuff), not so much.

Probably a bit too early in development for that but just as likely as anything else for all we know.

I believe these days the monetization model is part of the early core design of most GaaS titles in the MMORPG space at least.
Doubtful many game leads really care enough to quit of such models though, they want a big bonus too.

I mean every dev that has worked on this game said that the reveal was never meant to happen and Riot could cancel it at any minute. They do it all the time if there bar of quality is not being met.
I mean this game hasn't even been "officially" announced yet by Riot themselves. I never got my hopes up that we would ever see this game but I am fine with that. Riot releases quality products.
