Yes, it is going to be that time soon. How we are going to do this is that I am going to write down open sockets(as it were) and you can suggest either a fixed product(like, idk, 4070) or a category(x070 category). I am also going to write some goalposts, so we know what we are looking for. Alright? Let's go.
GOALS: 1 monitor / screen - gaming - NO Ray Tracing
If I were to build a new system now, I would buy a graphics card with more than 8gb vram. Tests show that 8gb is already not enough to play with the highest settings at 1080p and 1440p on some titles without stuttering or other issues. Hardware Unboxed's tests in the video below were eye opening for me and I think I will be eyeing a 16gb card for my next upgrade.
Another thing I might have missed. The components need to be as FUTURE PROOF as possible. Otherwise, I might as well buy a console of sorts and save myself quite some money.

am4 will alow yout o grow xD
RX6800 will be plenty of power for most games and mmo. I have a 6700 and get smooth frames and run cyberpunk 2077 easily on max setting no ray tracing. To me ray tracing just isnt mature enough to really "need" it imho.

Yeah, I don't want Ray Tracing. To me it's just another gimmick that comes every 5 years or so. Remember Tesselation? Yeah, where's it now?
I was looking at 6950, but was kinda worried about the future.

He means that AMD tries to have multiple CPU generations that support same motherboards, so that if you buy AMD motherboard you could in theory switch to better CPU without motherboard upgrade.
But personally I think it's most of the time useless gimmick. If you buy a decent CPU now, you should expect it to last 5 years or more. When it's time to do CPU upgrade tech will have changed enough that you should expect to have to buy new motherboard anyway.

If you don't care about ray-tracing or DLSS, then 6950 would be good GPU and well enough future proof. Even if it's already a bit older tech, the only real downside about using older tech is that newer tech would use less power to deliver same performance.
Does this mean you want a new monitor that's max. 25 inches?
This just got me thinking, there are really few (if any) 1440p gaming monitors that small. If you can't get a bigger monitor, than if I were you I think I'd just get some good 1080p gaming monitor.
It would also come with the advantage that on 1080p you could do well with significantly slower GPU and save money.

That is also a possibility, as I noted. Not to go for 1440, but to go for more frames at 1080. And 6950 would absolutely crush 1080 and even be a good prospect for 1440 in the future. I would want FSR though. RT does nothing for me, but FSR / DLSS / XESS has potential.
Is there a bottleneck checking site somewhere? I vaguely remember...

Take a look at how many 20 - 26.9 inch monitors with 2K or 4K resolution there are:

tesselation is everywhere, it's baked into dx drivers now.

AM5 socket is a new platform. The mid tier 6000 series are priced well enough it is a no brainer even if you need to upgrade to the next level of rx7000 series a few years down the road. This is why I build with AMD, prices are usually in a very balanced current performance and doesn't make you worry if you "do" want to upgrade later.

I think you should decide on monitor first, because that's a really limited selection.
There is another possibility. Not to basically replace my current PC, but to upgrade it to the max(basically, the Overcharge option). Given, it is AM4. And everything else that goes with it(DDR4 etc).
An upgrade of sorts is necessary imo. A rebuild or an upgrade though ... ? Starting with the monitor and my needs would be a smart idea.
I just got a MSI 4070 2X and Im loving it. I am getting North of 60 FPS, some games 120+ on High to Ultra settings @ 1440p. IMO its the best value in GPUs right now. the 4070 Ti is only about a 8-10% bump up over the 4070. When it comes down to it. Nvidia just does it better even though we all want AMD to win.

Would I really need anything above 4070Ti level? How about from the future proof angle?

Fact: GPUs dont seem to be designed to last 3-5 years like they used too. My guess from what we seen with this generation is a 10-20 boost from last years cards with the same naming. Like the 3070 to 4070. My guess the 4070 will be good for the nest 2-3 years if you want 1440p gaming. If you are happy with 1080 maybe 4-5 years. IMO nothing is worth it over the 4070 at the moment, its the best value we have now for price and performance. Everything else is over priced for the boost you get in power. If you just want future proof, buy a 4090 before they are gone, they have been discontinued.

From future proofing angle, it's cheaper to buy the $600 GPU that's likely good for 4 years rather than the $1 600 GPU and hope it would be good for 8 years.

Or do you have some budget target and want as good gaming computer as possible within that target?
So, treat it as suggestions for 1440 / 60 build. I would be ok with 1080 / 90+ too.

The build is missing case and PSU because I'm leaving for work and ran out of time to make it.

Where is Quizzical when you need him?
Regardless, do you think it's better to build new or upgrade current?
