EOY Awards - MMORPG.com

Heya all,

So I mentioned this in the Baldur's Gate 3 review thread but figured I'd start gauging reaction and gathering thoughts from the community early since we'll have to start thinking about our End of Year awards here soon.

With the release of BG3, Starfield, FFXVI, Tears of the Kingdom, and more this year, it's got me thinking about how we at the site do our End of the Year awards.

Historically, our Game of the Year has always been an MMORPG, which makes sense given the site's main (but no longer sole) focus. That has always included MMORPGs that haven't released that year simply because of how MMORPG development and release cycles work.

We have a separate, but not equal, category of Best RPG of the Year as well, but the MMORPG of the Year always takes the main billing for us.

I'm not sure I want to change the fact that we have separate categories for this, but this year, more than any in recent years it feels, has me thinking of doing a general Game of the Year category.

I've also been thinking of mixing up the MMORPG category a bit, to expand it with a separate "MMORPG Expansion of the Year" to differentiate the "best overall" from the expansions that were released that year.

This would also impact the categories we have for the Players' Choice Awards, which is why I'm hoping for some feedback here.

Cheers, all. Looking forward to your thoughts!

Sure, sounds good to me. I mean, "MMORPG" should be the focus but including other games ("general game of the year") doesn't seem to me to be beyond the pale since many players play many different types of games.

I think the game of the year should be an MMO first of this site but that does not mean it need be the only game of the year. Game of the year for MMOs, Game of the year RPG categories would be fitting.

I think if an MMORPG this year cannot satisfy the game of the year category here, token awards should not be given either. I feel a separate category for overall best rpg could be created which can include an MMORPG but to be honest for rpg they cannot compete in honesty since single player rpg outstrip them with very few exceptions.

However I feel sorry for MMORPG slipping away like this and yet another thing will be denied them. However there are no  outstanding examples of late, few years ago they had ffxiv but now....

More often than not the correct answer for MMORPG of the Year has been "None of the above" but they took that option away from us after the reality of the market set in.

Excellent ideas, especially the addition of "MMORPG Expansion of the Year."

I vote for Camelot Unchained. It's the only game still in development for more than 10+ years at this point that people still think about. People hit up there discord all day still waiting for the nostalgia of 2004. No one inspires hope more than Camelot. Even Star Wars and a crypto market can't compete with, "the last hope" movie titles.

Oh, you haven't visited the Pantheon forums recently, but still I think Ashes of Creation holds the Last Hope title, at least for those who favor PVP in the MMORPGS.

If it were ME... I would have an MMORPG of the Year awad and a Non-MMORPG of the Year award.  This way we can setup endless forum discussions about which of the two games is REALLY the game of the year.

If we had more candidates we could go a step further, Best Sandbox MMORPG, Best Themepark MMORPG as well.

Then hand everyone Nerf bats and let them beat all of the dead horses.

Uncharted Waters Origin is the game of the year.  It's also an MMORPG and launched just this year.  Problem solved.

They are just looking at how to reward their pick for game of the year being Baldur's Gate 3 while still honoring the namesake of the site.

The only thing I really care about is making sure that the games in the MMORPG categories are actually MMORPGs.

Most years, most of the games included in MMO categories are not massively multiplayer. In my eyes, this then undermines not only the awards, but the credibility of the site in general.

So you agree then let's drop the pretenses and let them award MMORPG of the year to BG3.

    ;)
