So, I bought a PS5 last evening

What the heck do I do with it? :)

I was wandering around Walmart waiting for my wife to buy some stuff when low and behold I see a single PS5 (Godz of War edition) sitting on the shelf, for sale at list price.

Always said I'd never buy one at a premium price, stand in line at 4 AM like my son did, or sign up to online notification lists, so when I saw it just sitting there I felt compelled to buy it.

My daughter asked "what will your online PC gamer friends think, you playing on a console?"

I noted 7D2D is releasing on a new console version soon, and maybe I could get my son to finally play the game since he loves his PS5. (Assuming I can figure how to play using a controller)  :#

I know The Last of Us is on PS5, so might be a good place to start

Also, the grand daughters turn 10 this fall so I can tell their parents they are eligible to play the E for Everyone content (10 and up) and it might keep them from asking to play Steam games on my computer.

;)

Or, I can donate it to charity or take it back for a refund.

Nice to have first world problems.

:)

I can count on one hand how many games I've played with my PS5 since I got it. I like having it for the possibility that something will release that I want to play that's exclusive.

I got nothing. The spiderman games, and ratchet and clank were good. The next spiderman will be too.

PlayStation has PSVR2, which is supposed to be pretty rad. No Man's Sky on PSVR2 is getting great reviews. There are a couple other killer-app VR games on the platform too.

Having been a long time console and PC gamer, I'd say look at the games list before committing to a platform. Find the platform that has the most kinds of games you're interested in.

Next compare which games each platform caters to and is putting money into.

Then choose the best performing piece of gear either offer (PS5 or Xbox Series X).

Each platform has its strengths and weaknesses.

I would have put money on you buying a Series X because I see that platform as offering more of the games you've played or mentioned interest in. On the other hand PlayStation is a premium exeperience. It's like the Apple or Samsung of gaming. Xbox is like the Walmart or Target lol, but I love it. Xbox also offer a superior and more seamless PC experience and integration with the console. Like I said, both have their own sets of pros/cons.

Both platforms will have most of the games you would want, with just a few exceptions. Those exceptions tend to be the big polarizers with people and tribal arguments.

    Ratchet and Clank

I use a controller but I hardly use my consoles. Mainly because my son took the monitor that had the hdmi.

Owning a PS5 and missing out on the God of War, Spiderman, and Horizon series seems like a complete travesty to me. Horizon Forbidden West on a nice 4K OLED TV has to be one of the prettiest games I've seen. It's stunning.

I'd really love a kart racer as good as Mario Kart. It's the thing neither PlayStation or Xbox have that Nintendo does.

Also, if the OP is serious about it, sub to PS+ Premium for a few months and check out all it has to offer, including PSNow (which I saw someone else mention). I can see PSNow eventually going the way of the Dodo, being replaced with cloud gaming and remote play. My last experience with PSNow is that it's a bandwidth and disk space pig, but I could play PS games on my PC, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I, hate, and love the fact that most ps games are now coming out on pc.  I'd say, somehow this makes me more inclined to buy their system.  Nintendo games, almost exclusively rely on their system.  Many of them I NEED mouse and keyboard for.  But (and while I think it's actually to PS's favor) offering their games on multiple platforms only furthers revenue.  Granted, I wanted a PS5 since it came out, but considering the (graphic card shortage/shiz) I've never been able to buy one.  (Even when I had the money, shelves for PS5 and video cards were barebones for years).
I still think, even under these conditions their sales would only grow offering ports to pc.  I'll still pick up a PS5 if it's in my miniscule price range but I'd also mention to Nintendo that the pc market is ripe for their games.
A lot of the good games are being ported.  I'd say the greatness of the system lies in its (former) exclusives and, really, the system itself.  It's a good system with good games.  A bit like epic unfortunetly.

    Thanks for the many suggestions.

Are any of these rated Everyone and appropriate for my soon to be 10 yrs old granddaughters?

Their parents won't let them play "violent video games" so Deer Hunter is probably out. ;)

Also, since they aren't great at taking turns or sharing, a game which both could play at the same time would be preferable.

My first thought was.. Resident Evil...but no...

Would they like one of the LEGO -games (Lego Star Wars, Lego Incredibles, etc.). I think most of those are rated PEGI 7 and have multiplayer on same console.

I'd also recommend Trine -series except it's rated PEGI 12.

Please note that I posted PEGI age ratings. US age ratings are likely to be a bit different.

    Astro's Playground
    Horizon: Forbidden West

Those are the only ones not on Windows.
Oh, I just googled a list of PS5 exclusives, and that is what it gave me.

Maybe those are just timed exclusives, which seems to be the way most exclusives are done now.

No worries, basically their parents don't want them playing shooters or randomly murdering things..which eliminates quite a few games, well at least in the types I tend to play.

Nintendo Switch would probably be better choice for them but I don't let Nintendo products into my house.

I've considered buying a PS5, but I don't go for high end graphics on my consoles.  I have an expensive PC for that.  I couldn't justify the price.  Nintendo first party titles give me a break from the serious gaming of my beast computer.

I'm of the opinion that the PS5, more than any previous PS, is more of a status symbol than anything.

I agree but if I was to get a console it would be a PS rather than an Xbox or Nintendo mind you.
