Yeah it's not about open dialogue and free thinking. It's about relevance and trolling. The site is about MMORPGs not politics and religion. Topic constraint only makes sense. Same for moderation with trolling.
This site has had tons of articles that have lead to productive discussions about every aspect of MMORPGs from graphics to gameplay to mechanics and systems.
This place covers MMORPGs, that's what it's about, I'm sure if people were here for open dialogue and free thinking involving video games there wouldn't be an issue, but we all know that's not always the case.
I think you summed it up pretty good though because "open dialogue and free thinking" is often just off topic trolling.

Does that even happen? Well it is social media, you say something they don't like and they think you have a mental health issue!
Some of you have seriously worried me, you are using social media as a source for the truth. I think we may have singled out Reddit too much here, surely all of you realize that taking what you read on social media as the truth is quite dangerous? It does not matter how many people "agreed" "loved" or whatever.
I am not saying you should ignore what is said on such platforms but when you are using a tool you should know its limitations. To be specific, anything controversial, anything political, anything which may have fans which want to force a topic to go a certain way, those subjects and more need to be taken with a very big pinch of salt.
I don't want to cast stones, but this approach is rather lazy. "I want to know the truth, I do a search on a social media platform, read for a few minutes, now I know the truth." Life does not work that way. I wish it did, life would be so much easier!
You need to have multiple information sources, trusted news sites, Wikipedia, a plain old goggle search. Obviously you don't do all this for every question that comes to mind, but I would not even take my opinion of games from one social media source. If I am not buying a game a single source like here is fine, but if I am about to buy, everything you guys have said on here is weighed against Steam reviews and Metacritic reviews. You need to look at multiple sources.

He used a trigger word in his post and the Reddit bot will send that. It has happened to me before when I used the word die or dying or any variation of that or kill and so on. Nuisance really.
Very funny that a post about less activity in the forums is one of the most active for posting in awhile almost like it willed posts into being.
Maybe someone should make a thread that there is no possible way that crowdfunded MMORPG's Star Citizen, Camelot Unchained, Pantheon etc will launch in 2024 in perfect condition and it will have a similar positive effect?

Hey if I'm gonna will something into being it's gonna be world peace or a suitcase full of money next, both of those have a better chance than crowd funded MMOs launching in perfect condition.

I think you summed it up pretty good though because "open dialogue and free thinking" is often just off topic trolling.
Sometimes the topics cross boundaries.
There is a game in development that, upon account creation, asks if you're a POC. It seems to me such an off the wall question, although laced with political overtones, would be worth discussing... and certainly wouldn't be off-topic. (1)
Are women allowed to discuss how they're portrayed in games?
What about bestiality in Baulder's Gate 3?
Games often introduce controversy on purpose. They often seek out dark/borderline themes or present difficult moral dilemmas - as part of the game. How can some of the most thoughtful aspects of a game be off limits?
I honestly don't have the answer to that question.
For society at large (not this forum) when the discussion stops the bullets soon follow. We'd better toughen up as a society.
NOTES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1: I'd be the first to admit I wouldn't want to have to be the moderator of that discussion.

Easy prediction: no game ever was or ever will be in "perfect condition". Not at release and not at any later point.
Unless we talk really simplistic games, where this is possible.
Or for example chess engines like Stockfish. Which are also quite simple, compared to commercial games.

People can't handle open dialogue and free thinking, hence the need for topic constraint and moderation.
People have been tought that words are violence and a different opinion is an attack.
There is a GREAT book on this called the Coddling of the American Mind. It's written by the head of the F.I.R.E. group about free speech. He is a former member of the ACLU but speaks with total clarity and consistency on Free Speech issues. Which annoys those on the Right and Left who tend to only want to hear those who agree with their own perspectives. The book does a great job about laying out why that is a bad idea and how it is damaging society.
Words are often hostile and meant as an attack. While not in themselves violent they can be used to incite violence. Nothing valuable comes for free, not even free speech. There is a cost associated with everything.
Regardless, this forum is not a free speech environment so it isn't really relevant to discussions here.
I won't go into any real depth, no need to go down that rabbit hole. Yes convos have dropped way off. Most of the issue, in my eyes, is a lack of actual content to report and debate. I'd also say............ politics have gotten intermingled (how could it not). Posters with reputable histories have.... declined. No news, or no good news rules the day.

Incorrect. It's not about Government Freedom of Speech. It's about a culture where we teach each other that people with other beliefs are the enemy and their mere words are "violence". Just look around the world and you will see the results of this. No government speech suppression required. Whether something is Constitutionally protected or not is irrelevant to whether it is good or bad for society.

Such is the nature of free speech. It can lead to both beneficial and baneful outcomes. That is why it needs constraint, so that the tendency is toward the former and away from the latter.

It's one thing to say that some topics are off-limits for discussion on this site. That's fine.
The problem comes when it's okay to discuss a topic and express opinions that mods agree with, but not to express opinions on the same topic that mods disagree with. That's what is really toxic to a forum. It should not be that one side of a discussion can say whatever they want with impunity, but when the other side responds in kind, it's suddenly a bannable offense.
There have been some front page articles that were political in nature, such as discussing the Dobbs supreme court case or a pro-unionization editorial. If the site is going to start such discussions, then it's essential to allow all sides to have their say. Conversely, if you're unwilling to allow discussion of certain topics, then you have to consistently shut down all sides of it--and especially not start the topic yourself with front page articles.
Thats one perspective. I believe it's wrong. And dangerous. But such is why we luckilly enjoy the ability to have those different perspectives. At least for now.
That speech can lead to beneficial and baneful actions is fact, not a matter of perspective.
That speech needs constraint is debatable, and to date the winning argument has been yes.
What differs between societies is the degree and nature of constraint of speech felt proper, not whether or not constraint of such in itself is.
We can of course have any perspectives we like. It's not like they change what is or not.
As I said. I have a different perspective. As Mill said in “On Liberty”:
Mill warned of the “peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion” explaining that “[i]f the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.”

This sounds like the villain from the Vin Diesel movie XXX.
Even federally protected "free speech" is not all-encompassing. You can't incite panics or violence.
