After recently giving FFIVX a try it is amazing how different it is to lose the hand-holding, the delivery boy quests, and the bright shiny floating quest markers that dominate FFIVX. There is nothing wrong with those things, and 20 million people agree, so I'm not bagging on FFIVX but I certainly won't miss it.
What do I like about Fractured Online?
- I happen to like player knowledge as a form of advancement. I don't know how tough a monster is until I blast it and either melt the silly thing or end up running and screaming.
- Even though the game is isometric I find the spell effects to be interesting.
- The abilities and talent system isn't something I've completely figured out yet, but there seems to be quite a bit going on here.
- The map has ???? over things I've not discovered yet so the sense of exploration is back. I found myself writing down the coordinates of things which isn't something I've done in years.
- I can find interesting loot that is useful for an extensive crafting/imbuing system.
- People talk in chat - which seems absent from many titles these days.
- NO LEVELED GEAR or MOBS as far as I can tell.
The problems:
- It is anyone's guess to how long the game will last.
- Not all features are implemented.
- If you aren't into exploring the world can seem a little empty - you have to find your game.
Well, for me this game is the most interesting thing I've found in quite a bit of searching.
Comments
- Smack talk between inhabitants of different worlds cracks me up.
- I like the crafting system and variety of ingredients.
- I really enjoy just running around finding stuff.
At one time, in UO, I would spend hours killing orcs and opening chests. Well, they have lockpick-able chests here so wiping a bandit camp and grabbing loot from chests is for me.They're still early access.
From what I gather in the chat, both worlds (human and wildfolk) are populated and PvP is happening.
Someone call the Union Steward, time to pull someone's membership card.

Spent an hour running quests yesterday without a single battle.
A question if I may.
When I tried the game I couldn't increase the size of the text to one readable to me. Have you tried adjusting it, and if so can it now be changed to a significant degree?
Tell me this thread doesn't bring it all back:

I'll have to stay involved just to see how the drama plays out.
The PvP is optional; however, as on Terra as a wildfolk you simply cannot be attacked.
Still, the other planets would be off limits for you.
I'm not huge into PvP either and will be spending 95% of my time in PvE land. The thread to which I linked reminded me why.
In DAOC we did the same, just wore appropriate gear for our race/class.

A PK doesn't care if he dies alot - so if he can find a way to fight where he risks no capital (or next to none) then he'll do that. He's not enamored of your fancy gear if he can get a nekid buddy to help out.
In UO, the PKs I saw that got whacked usually had nothing on them.
You'd spend more in reagents killing them then the value of the loot they carried.
"Language of the Shadowclan Orcs"
"What Humans Should Know
Our language is broken english mixed with some of our own orcish words along with some basic orcish from Tolkein.
The only words you humans need to understand are:
Gib (Give) Urks (Orcs) Tribuut (Tribute) tu (to) Wargod (Orcish god)
The correct response to an orc speaking the above phrase is to hand over some food and gold to appease the orc wargod.
Some other common words that you may find helpful are as follows: "

The Shadow Clan started out as hardcore RPer Orcs in UO, which only had human characters. They dressed like Orcs and looked the part they acted so well.
They were a fun group.

I'd rather that the game offer incentives for remaining lawful. For example, keeping karma with different shrines offers loot/exp/power bonuses. The unlawful cannot get to these shrines and therefore don't have the bonuses.
Why would a person play a PK if a little bit of network lag could cost them hours of work on stats? We should look to keep it fun for everyone.
If done well, the first adds to a game's fun and stickiness for participants, the second destroys it for the target victims.
Any system that's designed to make fun and stickiness for all of the players has to account evenly to all.
