Kind of begs the question, why do folks love pvp in battle arenas, battle royals extraction shooters ect, but not MMORPGs? Because MMORPG PvP sucks, is unbalanced and there are too many cheaters that go unpunished.

It is unbalanced but that’s the attraction. Who can get high enough to be on top.

This game is trash anyways. SWG PvP with the whole BH vs Jedi and TEF system will always be the best system I ever played. Even the perma-death system was better than this exploit crap these days.  If someone ever made a new game with that type of system I would be stoked.

No one can make a name for themselves anymore. Too much exploiting to be fun. If you want to be on top you gotta join in the exploiting risking your account when they do finally do something, so then at that point it's just a throwaway account.

There was a time when you knew who the best of a class was on the server in an MMORPG, not anymore; it's usually just people complaining about the un-killable teleport hacking chad named epeenhunter that goes invisible insta-killing random people as they go by, or through walls before they even have a chance to react, then teleports to the other side of the map. Most devs are either slow to fix the problem (gw2 wvw) or threaten people with suspensions for discussing complaints of such exploits (BDO).

Including PvP in a game that has significant PvE content is probably the biggest challenge in MMORPGs.

PvP brings the biggest challenges for developers for many reasons, not the least of which is balance.  The PvE mobs don't care if an opponent is unbalanced, but that matters for all the world in PvP.

For some reason developers don't give the players the tools they need to police themselves.

It also means the player base has to have a certain mindset, sadly, it is lacking in most players today.  From what I've seen most people want to play dress up, which is fine - choose your own entertainment - but why people find that entertaining escapes me.

Those don't just include PvP; they are fully based on PvP, so that's not really what I'm talking about.

What gets left out of the PVP discussion is that “PVE“ games can have an intense amount of player versus player competition.  Any marketplace game can have someone in the marketplace that lowballs prices and cost you more in the PVE environment than any player killer might cost you in a pure PVP title.

In fractured online guild mates have undercut me in the market costing me tens of thousands in gold, whereas reds have cost me less than 2K.

So the mindset is that somebody in the PVE world can beat you to spawn or resources or undercut you in the market and cost you a great deal of time and money, and that’s no problem…. but a red takes 30 minutes worth of gold farming off corpse, and that is just too much.

Nothing wrong with avoiding games, where somebody can kill your character; however, much of a hyperbolic discussion in this area is illogical and silly.

Many people that like to pvp just want to get into the pvp, not do a bunch of pve in order to be good enough to pvp. Or even worse is the inability to gear solely through pvp. Imo, there's kind of nothing worse than losing in pvp to someone that's only good at pve, simply because they have better gear and not because they played better. Kind of why lobby pvp games are so much more popular than mmo pvp.

    Dark Age of Camelot?

A good example of where PvP did not make the game worse, but I'd argue that it also did not improve the game. It's just a thing you can do that's not all that interesting to a big chunk of the players.

(Also, the game is arguably based on RvRvR as a selling point, so again, not exactly what I'm talking about.)
