Journey Through MMOs: Nostalgia, Lessons Learned, and Finding Home in the Classics.

It's kind of wild to think about how long we've been playing some of these games. Recently I was going through some old posts here from 2005-2008 and a common theme that I came across was people looking for the next MMO to dig their teeth in. So many of these games ended up either not delivering or faced a premature sunset.

Here we are now in the year 2024 and still playing MMO's. As for me, I've found peace existing and playing mostly older MMO's. Games such as Everquest, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, Guild Wars (remember when we used to argue this was not a MMO?), Ultima Online, Lineage II and even WoW Classic. These games, to me, represent the zenith of MMOs. This realization didn't dawn on me at the time because the genre still felt nascent and unfulfilled, especially as we anticipated titles like Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa and Guild Wars 2 hoping they would usher in the next era of MMO exploration.

So, to all of you mmo veterans; what have you learned and what type of games did you end up favoring? Do you still look forward to any new titles or end up finding the game that you call home?
