“DUNGEONS & DRAGONS offers one of the richest fantasy worlds that has ever been created, and it only gets bigger with every new sourcebook and adventure."

Spoken like somebody who really has no connection to the game as D&D is not a fantasy world in and of itself.

I fear that in my lifetime kids will no longer approach D&D as an analog source of fun and creativity, as the pendulum is already strongly swinging that way with playing on virtual tabletops seeming to be the default expectation now.

While you're technically right D&D is in iteself just a RPG system, It kind of fits with what he said 'fantasy worlds' what with the Greyhawk, Eberron, Forgotten Realms etc... etc.... etc.... settings you can play it in. Most when they think of D&D, they don't just think of an RPG system, they think the setting.

Are there D&D settings in other areas such as Sci Fi, Steam Punk, or Apocalypse, maybe with zombies?

I've only ever noticed it being used for fantasy settings.

I think so, I was a 1st / 2nd Edition PnP player and then later DDO so I haven't kept up with them all.

But the wiki article shows Dark Sun as sounding Sci-Fi ish.

I played a Dark Sun single player PC RPG so many years ago I don't remember anything about it other than I didn't like it much and never finished it.

I normally loved the SSI Gold Box series, the original Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dales titles but Dark Sun and Planescape didn't connect with me but I no longer recall why.

Dark Sun has no sci-fi elements whatsoever. It is 100% fantasy. It is apocalyptic, but the apocalypse is caused by magic, not technology.

I totally agree with Elric -- calling D&D a "fantasy world" is utterly moronic.

There are several campaigns that have non-high fantasy elements.
Dark Sun has Psionics which is usually considered more sci-fi than fantasy.
The Spelljammer setting has "spaceships". At least ocean going type ships that can fly in space.
Eberron has an Artificer class that uses a type of techno magic. You can also play a race called Warforged that is a manufactured race that houses a soul. They resemble a droid with a smart AI.

    Well depends

There was Spell Jammer, which was a space exploration style game - Still mainly Magic / Fantasy as opposed to sci-fi, but had a Star Wars kind of feel to it.

You also had things like Ravenloft, which was your grim undead apocalyptical world, but the humans mainly lost - Still a fantasy setting, as opposed to modern gun slinging setting

Ebberon is very Steam Punk style all things said and done

There are rules for Firearms, but they are mainly involving black powder, not modern or futuristic weapons. However you could write off some modern style weapons as magic items, like a Flame Thrower counts as a Wand of Fireballs, for example.
