The drumbeat towards launch continues with two new videos giving Dragon's Dogma fans a look at how some of the game's basic vocations will play in Dragon's Dogma 2. This time, Capcom's put a focus on the Archer and Mage vocations.

In the first game some spells did take quite a bit but you could upgrade to the next level. I don't believe it made them "instant cast" but they were fast.
Ultimately you have 3 pawns as your party members and they can help you if you are a mage. While you don't literally control them you can call them to you and they can take care of your enemy as you reposition yourself.

I think it's supposed to be large enough to not only push the enemy but also be a barrier. That is if you are talking about the first ice spell?

Yep, just like in the first game, hehe. It's a bit annoying, but you get used to it, and forming a party around the magic-users is pretty exciting- having frontliners to take on the enemies while your mage gets it's 1-2 shot death spell ready is part of a bigger learning process.
Enemy mages have the same weakness, they have long-casts; so when encountering more dangerous groups, you always look for the enemy mage casting something, cause usually it's a kill spell if it takes long, -so striking a mage while casting interrupts the cast.
Whoever was creating these demonstration videos didn't exactly showcase a mage in larger party make-ups; which is where the mage truly shines; but i'm guessing they were trying to keep the demonstrations simple and not show too much.
